Hayom Yom 14 Adar 1 - Likkutei Torah chosen from 2000 Maamarim
[On Purim Katan,] Tachanun is not recited
My revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash], once told my revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab]:
“The maamarim that appear in Likkutei Torah
my father (the Tzemach Tzedek) chose from two thousand maamarim [authored by the Alter Rebbe].”
Hayom Yom 14 Adar 2 - Chabad Purim Customs
When reading the Megillah,
the phrase (Esther 8:11) להרג ולאבד should be read: להרג ולאבד ולהרג ולאבד.
The phrase (op. cit., 9:2) ואיש לא עמד בפניהם should be read: ואיש לא עמד בפניהם ואיש לא עמד לפניהם.
The Megillah should be rustled as one reads the phrases, האגרת הזאת and אגרת הפרים הזאת השנית.
In the passage Shoshanas Yaakov [that follows the reading of the Megillah, the preferred
The blessing Shehecheyanu is recited [before the Megillah is read] by day as well [as at
night].
In the Megillah written by my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash], the names of Haman’s sons are not written in a separate column,
nor does each of the columns begin with the word hamelech (“the king”).
[At this point, the Rebbe makes emendations to the Hebrew text of Torah Or that have since been incorporated in all of its editions, and also cites a variant reading.]

Hayom Yom 13 Adar 1 - This joy generates abundant goodness
During the Afternoon Service, Tachanun is not recited.
My revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], once remarked:
“It is clear to me
that when a chassidic Jew sits in the House of Study
and learns or reviews aloud a maamar of Chassidus together with others,
he brings joy to my forefathers.
This happiness generates for that person, for his children, and for his grandchildren,
abundant goodness, both material and spiritual.”
Hayom Yom 13 Adar 2 - Moshe’s men do battle with Amalek
[On the Shabbos before Purim,] the haftarah begins Ko amar Ado-nai (I Shmuel 15:2-34).
[After the Torah Reading,] the passage beginning Av HaRachamim is recited.
[In the Afternoon Service,] the passage beginning Tzidkas’cha is omitted.
It is written: “And Amalek came and fought with Israel at Refidim,”
[i.e., the Jews had] “weakened their involvement in the words of the Torah.”
When a Jew weakens his hold on Torah study,
which should be pursued in order to be observed in practice,
along comes Amalek and cools him down.
[The above verse continues to relate that Amalek] “fought with Israel.” Israel (ישראל) is an acronym for the phrase, יש ששים ריבוא אותיות לתורה — “There are 600,000 letters in the Torah.”
For every Jew has a letter in the Torah,
which is why it is customary for every Jew to write a letter in a Torah scroll.)
[When Amalek “fought with Israel,” it was Israel’s roots in the Torah that Amalek fought with:] Amalek cools off [a Jew’s sensitivity to] the holiness of the Torah.
[The following verse gives] the solution: “Choose men for us, [and go out and do battle with Amalek].” [These must be] Moshe’s men
and “there is an extension of Moshe in every generation,” for every generation has its “leaders of the thousands of Israel.”
[Significantly, the directive to] “go out and do battle with Amalek” appears in the singular,
because the Torah is eternal, applying equally to [every individual in] every generation, at every time, and in every place.

Hayom Yom 12 Adar 1 - giving of himself leads him before great men
It is written: “A man’s gift grants him amplitude, and leads him before great men.”
Some people are renowned for their wisdom or their wealth.
However, “a man’s gift” —
his giving of himself to an activity that strengthens the practice of Yiddishkeit —
not only elicits ample blessings,
but also “leads him before great men.”
Hayom Yom 12 Adar 2 - Sacrifice the Evil Inclination, the animal soul
The words that introduce the passages on the sacrifices
[literally mean], “A man who will bring from you a sacrifice to G-d...
Seemingly, the word order should have been, “A man from [among] you who will bring a sacrifice to G‑d....”
the Alter Rebbe explains:
[Now, the verb used here for “bringing an offering” is יקריב, which shares a root with the verb meaning “to draw near.”] Accordingly, the Alter Rebbe explains: “‘A man who will offer,’ i.e., if a person is to draw near to G‑d,
the offering must come ‘from you’ — from one’s very self,
from the animal within him;
that is, he must sacrifice the Evil Inclination, which is [sometimes] called the animal soul.”

Hayom Yom 11 Adar 1 - Prayers should be heard by G‑d as if....
There is a well-known tradition
concerning individuals who do not have the mental ability to concentrate on the kavanos, the mystical concepts to be meditated upon in the course of the prayers,
either because they are not familiar with them, or because they cannot recall the specific concepts at the appropriate points in the course of the prayers:
It is sufficient that they have in mind a comprehensive kavanah —
that their prayers should be heard by G‑d as if [they were recited] with all the kavanos that are set out in the Kabbalistic texts.
Hayom Yom 11 Adar 2 - Halacha signifies a persons Divine service.
[This year (5703/1943), exceptionally,] the Fast of Esther is observed [on this date,] before its usual time.
[In any year, the Morning Service for the Fast of Esther includes] Selichos and Avinu Malkeinu,
and the [contribution of three coins of] half a shekel [is made at Minchah time].
[The study of halachah through the eyes of] Chassidus comprises two fundamental approaches:
(a) Understanding every halachah at its essential, spiritual root and source
in the various Sefiros and rungs within each of the spiritual worlds.
The distinctive nature of each world is explained in the teachings of Chassidus.
(b) Understanding what each halachah signifies in an individual’s Divine service.
Although [the halachah] represents Divine wisdom and intelligence and is Torah law,
one should [seek and] discover an element within it that affects his avodah and his conduct, as he lives his life in this physical world.

Hayom Yom 10 Adar 1 - In preparation for the Grace after Meals
In [preparation for] the Grace after Meals, before washing the fingertips for mayim acharonim
we recite the psalms Al naharos Bavel, Lamenatzeiach bineginos, then [the bracket of verses beginning] Avarchah, and the verse, Zeh chelek.
On a day when Tachanun is not recited,
we recite the psalms that begin Shir hamaalos beshuv and Livnei Korach [instead of the two psalms mentioned above], then [the bracket of verses beginning] Avarchah, and the verse, Zeh chelek.
After washing the fingertips with mayim acharonim, we recite the verse Vaydaber eilai.
Hayom Yom 10 Adar 2 - Chassidim don’t bid each other farewell
Before leaving your hometown,
you should hold a chassidic farbrengen
and receive the parting blessings of your good friends,
in the spirit of the well-known adage:
Chassidim don’t bid each other farewell,
for they never really separate.
Wherever they are, they are one family.

Hayom Yom 9 Adar 1 - Be equipped with Torah to walk the street
When a person walks down the street and mentally reviews passages from Mishnayos or Tanya,
or sits in his store with a Chumash or a Tehillim,
this is more cherished [Above] than [in previous ages],
when the street shone with the light of Torah.
One must not go out in the street emptyhanded.
One must be equipped with words of Torah with which one can walk in the street.
Hayom Yom 9 Adar 2 - A Chassid’s thirst to bind with his Rebbe
In the blessing borei nefashos,
in the phrase al kol mah shebarasa,
the letter kaf should be vocalized with a cholam, not a kamatz.
[A chassid’s] great thirst to be bound with his Rebbe
can be satisfied only by studying the maamarim that the Rebbe delivers and writes,
for merely seeing his face is not enough.

Hayom Yom 8 Adar 1 - A Yud above, a Yud below, a line in between.
The Alter Rebbe once summoned a young disciple of the Maggid [of Mezritch].
Speaking in his customary singsong, he said:
“I am charged with the commandment, ‘And you shall teach them to your children,’
and you are charged with the mitzvah of providing for your family.
Let us exchange tasks.
I will provide you with what you need to fulfill your mitzvah,
and you will teach my son” —
who was the Mitteler Rebbe.
The Alter Rebbe then gave him a study plan:
“First, you should teach him the letters of the alef-beis.
What is an alef?
A point above, a point below, and a line in between.
That makes an alef.
“A child must know
that the first principle of the Torah
is a yud Above,
a yid below,
and a line of faith that connects them.”
Or, according to another version:
“The yud above is the soul,
the yud below is the body,
and the line in the middle is the fear of Heaven.”
Hayom Yom 8 Adar 2 - One action is better than a thousand sighs
My revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], writes in one of his letters:
“One action is better than a thousand sighs.
Our G‑d is alive and the Torah and its mitzvos are eternal.
Abandon sighing,
apply yourself diligently to actual avodah, and G‑d will be gracious to you.”

Hayom Yom 7 Adar 1 - A Jew must know that he is an agent of G-d
Every Jew must know that he is an agent of the Master of All,
[charged with the mission of] actualizing - wherever he may be - G‑d’s will and intent in creating the world —
to illuminate the world through the light of the Torah and Divine service.
This is achieved through the performance of practical mitzvos and by inculcating [in oneself] positive character traits.
Hayom Yom 7 Adar 2 - When walking the street think Torah
One ought to think about words of Torah when walking down the street,
either verbalizing them or not,
depending upon whether one is permitted to speak words of Torah in that place.
When one walks down the street without being occupied with words of Torah,
the cobblestone on which he treads tells him:
“Blockhead, who are you to be treading on me?
What makes you better than me?”

Hayom Yom 6 Adar 1 - Pleasurable satisfaction doing a Jew a favor
My revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], once said:
“It is a wondrous trait,
when G‑d grants a person
a warm sensitivity and a pleasurable satisfaction in doing a fellow Jew a favor —
to the point that he cherishes him more than he cherishes himself.
For a person can find many reasons to explain
why he himself deserves [to be challenged by] difficulties,
whereas such assumptions about someone else are unthinkable.”
Hayom Yom 6 Adar 2 - Every word in Tanya is precise
The haftarah to be read this week [Parshas Pekudei] begins Vatishlam kol hamelachah [from Melachim 7:51 and 8:1-21].
In the blessings that follow every haftarah, the wording to be used is ne’eman verachaman Atah and toshia u’sesamach.
According to a tradition handed down by chassidic elders,
the Tanya comprises the words of counsel
that the Alter Rebbe gave to chassidim who consulted him individually at yechidus between the years 5540 (1780) and 5550 (1790).
In the summer of 5552 (1792), he began to give the Tanya its present structure.
By 5553 (1793) there were already many manuscript copies.
Over the course of time, errors crept into the text and [the misnagdim] also began to produce forgeries.
This is why the Alter Rebbe applied his energies to having it printed [in 5557 (1796)].
According to another tradition,
the Alter Rebbe composed the Tanya in the course of 20 years,
choosing every word precisely.
By the year 5555 (1795), when the text was refined and polished,
he gave permission to copy it.
When the manuscript copies increased and errors crept in, he gave it to print.
The Tzemach Tzedek related
that on the first Rosh HaShanah of his life, in 5550 (1789),
[his grandfather] the Alter Rebbe delivered a maamar [that opened with the teaching], “An oath is administered [to the soul]: ‘Be a tzaddik….’“
That discourse constitutes the first three chapters of the Tanya.

Hayom Yom 5 Adar 1 - Divine Providence leads us to our mission
Beyond the slightest shadow of a doubt,
wherever our feet tread,
the sole reason is that we refine and purify the earth by uttering words of the Torah and of prayer.
We — all of Israel — are agents of the Compassionate One,
each of us according to the charge that supernal Providence has decreed upon him.
No one is free from the holy task that has been placed on our shoulders.
Hayom Yom 5 Adar 2 - Nigleh, Chassidus, and Avoda are all a must
The study of nigleh,
the study of Chassidus,
and Divine service through actual avodah,
are all equally necessary.
Not only is it unthinkable to claim that any one of these should override or be overridden by another,
but rather, they should support one another.
As the Sages taught, “An unlearned person cannot be pious ('a chassid’),”
indicating that the study of nigleh is necessary.
And “who is pious (‘a chassid’)? One who acts with kindness to his Creator,”
indicating that the study of Chassidus is necessary.
And the ultimate goal of study is actual practice.
