The Shpoler Zeide1
was a man of ardent feeling,
more intensely so than his colleagues, the other disciples of the Maggid of Mezritch.
When he visited the Alter Rebbe in Liadi, in the year 5569 (1809) or 5570 (1810),
he related that when he was three years old and saw the Baal Shem Tov,
“he placed his holy hand on my heart,
and from that time onward, I have felt warm.”
A [mere] gesture of a tzaddik,
and all the more so, seeing him or hearing his voice,
should generate an effect that will never be forgotten.2

When a street lamp is erected,
all those seeking light gather around,
for light attracts.

In 5648 (1887), my revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], was elected gabbai of the Chevrah Kaddisha.
Following the local custom, he was escorted by a large number of townsmen to the synagogue on Simchas Torah.
There he delivered the maamar that begins, Ein HaKadosh-Baruch-Hu Ba BiTrunia,
and concluded with these words:
“Even those of superior intellect who are here now must put their minds aside
and not follow their own reasoning,
for their minds can mislead them
to the extent of (Heaven forbid) a bitter end.”
This is the fundamental point in this era of ikvesa diMeshicha:
not to follow one’s intellect and reasoning,
but rather to observe the Torah and its mitzvos with artless sincerity and simple faith in the G‑d of Israel.

A person’s life depends upon the air around him:
without air one cannot live.
Moreover, the kind of air in which one lives determines the quality of one’s life.
When a person lives in an atmosphere of Torah and mitzvos, his life is healthy.
When he lives in an atmosphere that denies G‑d, his life is sickly
and he is under constant risk of contagion.
The first, comprehensive remedy is to purify the air,
and this is the responsibility of those who are educated in Torah studies.
It is the letters of Torah that purify the air.
While standing in the store, walking down the street,
or riding the subway,
when a person verbalizes words of the Torah1 he purifies the air.
Whoever is familiar with Torah learning
must have something on call that he has learned by heart,
be it Chumash, Tehillim, Mishnayos, or Tanya.
[so that] at any time and in every place.
This will enable him to review the holy words of the Torah — mentally and verbally

[The Morning Service on this] fast day includes Selichos and Avinu Malkeinu.
In response to a question raised at yechidus, the Tzemach Tzedek once explained:
“It is written, ‘Let the wicked man abandon his path and the man of iniquity [abandon] his thoughts.’
“The word אָוֶן (‘iniquity’) can also be interpreted as hinting at אוֹן (‘strength’).
Just as a wicked man must ‘abandon his path,’
for without teshuvah he cannot approach holiness,
so too, a man of strength —
that is, a person who is strong and confident in his own opinions —
must ‘abandon his thoughts.’
He should no longer say: ‘This is what I say,’ or ‘This is how I hold.’
For any mention of ‘I’ and [any conception of oneself as an] entity [of weighty import] is the source of evil and instills divisiveness between people’s hearts.”

In the prayer beginning Aleinu, the wording that we customarily follow is, “…for they bow down to vanity and nothingness.”
This version is also used in the Mussaf prayers of Rosh HaShanah.
We make a point of not saying, “and they pray [to a god who]….”
It is customary to spit after reciting the above phrase.
The reason is that speaking generates saliva, and we do not wish to benefit from the saliva generated by uttering such words.

The Tzemach Tzedek instructed all the tutors of his young grandchildren
that in addition to the regular studies,
they should also teach the plain meaning of the words of the prayers.
Once a month, the children would come to the Tzemach Tzedek to be tested.

The appropriate amount [of time needed] to free oneself from [the punishment of] chibut hakever1 is
to spend a sixth of one’s day reciting the letters of the Torah, Tehillim and the like.
One merits the purification of the soul that exempts him from [the punishment of] kaf hakela
by reviewing Mishnayos, Tanya, and Tehillim by heart, as much as possible throughout the day.

It is written:1 “Know the G‑d of your father and serve Him wholeheartedly.”
For every concept that is known and comprehended, even the very deepest,
must find expression in Divine service;
that is, in activity that refines and improves one’s middos (emotive qualities) and develops an inner bonding [to G‑d].
In chassidic terminology this activity is called avodah.2

When Mashiach comes,
we will appreciate the distinctive quality of hodaah [i.e., acknowledgment of G‑d and belief in Him] and temimus — artless sincerity,
the pure faith with which all [Jews] believe in G‑d, His Torah, and His mitzvos.
When it comes to study, even the highest levels of understanding have their limits.
Hodaah, by contrast, is a feeling that has no boundaries.
The King Mashiach will endow us with an understanding of the superior worth, as expressed in action,
of sincere, heartfelt, earnest Divine service.
