דוקא בקשר לחג השבועות נאמר [בפ' ראה] "מסת נדבת ידך אשר תתן". והביאור – בהקדם הדיוק במ"ש "נדבת ידך" ולא "נדבת לבך"? אלא מצד גודל הביטול ד"הקדמת נעשה לנשמע" שבחג השבועות, נפעל שהגוף נעשה "מרכבה" לה', עד שהיד נותן צדקה מעצמה! ומחה"ש זה נמשך לשאר היו"ט ולימים שביניהם. ועפי"ז יובן גודל הענין ד"נדבת ידך", הביטול דכח העשי', ("נעשה"), אף שלכאו' אין הבדל בכח העשי' בין יהודי לשאר הנבראים, כי במ"ת נפעל בחירת הקב"ה דוקא בגוף יהודי שנדמה בחומריותו לגופי אוה"ע. ולכן, אף שלכאו' בנתינת הצדקה חשוב רק שהעני יקבלה, ומה משנה מי הנותן (יהודי או לא), אבל באמת "נדבת ידך" של יהודי אינו דומה ל"נדבת ידך" של אינו-יהודי! כי "יד" של יהודי המחלקת צדקה, ה"ה מרכבה לה'! ובמילא מקבל העני את הצדקה מה'! וזה יחי' אותו שלא בערך יותר! [ומזה מובן גדול השטות בכללות הענין ד"מיהו יהודי", עכ"כ שיש יהודי חרדי שעומד לפרסם שחוק זה ה"ז "הישג דתי" וכו' – היפך דעת 32 רבנים שחתמו שהחוק הוא גזירה איומה!].

It is specifically in connection with the holiday of Shavuos that the verse states (in parashas Re’eh): “The extent of the donation of your hand that you give should be in accordance with the extent to which Hashem your G-d will bless you.” Here it says, “donation of your hand” (rather than “donation of your heart” as it usually says) because the tremendous bitul on Shavuos of giving precedence to “We will do” before “We will hear” causes the physical body to become a “chariot” for Hashem, to the point that the hand gives tzedakah on its own. And from Shavuos, this flows to the other Yomim Tovim and the rest of the year. Based on this we can understand the greatness of action (“We will do”): while it might seem that there’s no difference between the action of a Jew that action of any other being –nevertheless, at Matan Torah Hashem chose specifically the body of a Jew, which physically appears similar to the body of a gentile. Therefore, when it comes to tzedakah, although it might seem that what matters is not who gives the tzedakah but that the poor person receives it, the truth is that “the donation your hand” from a Jew is totally incomparable that of a non-Jew: since the Jewish hand giving tzedakah is a chariot for Hashem, the poor person is receiving tzedakah from Hashem, which will sustain him in an infinitely greater manner. (And from this one can understand the great foolishness surrounding the “Who is a Jew” issue in general, and particularly the notion of a religious Jew planning to announce that the law is a “religious achievement” etc. – in direct contradiction to the view of 32 rabbonim who signed a statement saying that the law is a terrible decree.)

It is a Jewish custom, when blessing another Jew, to tie it to tzedakah and Torah study on their behalf (as it says in the Shulchan Aruch: before studying Torah, it is permitted to stipulate that the study will be in someone else’s merit). Therefore, it is a good and proper practice to establish that from now on, when Jews gather to offer blessings and give gifts to a Bar or Bas Mitzvah, a Chosson and Kallah etc. – it should be tied to giving tzedakah and studying Torah in their merit. It is a mitzvah to publicize this. And this applies to women too: Regarding tzedakah, we find that these days, while the husbands may be the ones who bring in the money, the spending is in the hands of the wives (in fact, their husbands come to them for money for their personal expenses etc.). Regarding Torah study: The Shulchan Aruch states two reasons why women recite the blessings over Torah study: (1) They have a share in the Torah study of their husbands and children, and (2) they themselves are obligated to learn all the halachos pertaining to the mitzvos that apply to them. In addition, women are also fully obligated in the study of Chassidus, which is the path to love and fear of Hashem etc., obligations that apply to women just as they apply to men.

The name of the entire parashah is “Re’eh” (“See”), meaning that everything in the parashah must be internalized with the same certainty as something one sees with his own eyes. But this raises a question arises on the verse [in shelishi]: “If your brother, the son of your mother; your son; your daughter; the wife of your embrace; or your friend who is like your own soul [those who are especially “dear to you,” as Rashi explains], incites you in secret, saying, ‘Let us go and worship…’ … you must do not love him…you must not have mercy…Your hand must be the first against him to put him to death….” Seemingly, how is it possible for a person to reach such a state of “seeing,” that not only does he not listen those who are “dear to him,” but also puts his hand “first against him to put him to death”?! The answer is that since the “Seeing”) comes from Anochi (“I”) which transcends the names Havayah and Elokim etc., therefore, the person is empowered to rise above the confines and limitations of the world.

Today’s Rambam discusses the korban brought by a woman who gave birth, which highlights Jewish unity: most of the korbanos offered by individuals are brought only under certain circumstances which might never apply to a person in their life (the sin offering, guilt offering, vow and gift offerings, thanksgiving offering). The only individual offering brought for every Jew no matter who they are or what they’ve done is the korban brought by the woman who gave birth, because every Jew is born. And the bird (which is used for her sin-offering component, and if she is poor, for the ascent offering as well) in particular emphasizes Jewish unity, as the Rambam writes in Moreh Nevuchim: the reason Hashem commanded to bring korbanos from birds is because they are widely available and everyone can afford them.

A lesson from the verse (in rishon of parashas Re’eh), “Because you have not yet come to the resting place nor to the inheritance…you must settle in the land…He will grant you respite from all your surrounding enemies”: “Resting” implies that there is a possibility of war, just that at present there is rest from it. “Inheritance,” by contrast, has no end. And the ultimate goal is that even the rest from enemies should be eternal, by transforming all the enemies into friends – “He will grant you respite from all your…enemies.” In terms of Divine service: This world by nature is the “world of separation,” and the verse states, “Let us make man…” in the plural, allowing for the mistaken notion that there are two separate camps, one camp is involved in Torah study without engaging in refining the world (like the generation of the desert), while the other is involved in business and worldly matters and does not occupy itself with Torah study (but gives tzedakah so that someone else can study Torah). Even if the two camps are not fighting one another, and even assist one another, this is still not true rest. The purpose of the soul’s descent below is to attain true rest, which is when there are no enemies at all and all belong to one camp: the generation of the desert itself conquers Eretz Yisroel and builds a Mishkan there for Hashem, and the businessman himself sets fixed times for Torah study. This is the meaning of “One nation in the land” – to draw down the reality that “Hashem is One” into even earthly matters.

The Gemara states (Bava Basra 21a): “That man is remembered for the good, and his name is Yehoshua be Gamla. If not for him the Torah would have been forgotten from the Jewish people. Initially, whoever had a father, [his father] would teach him Torah. Whoever did not have a father would not learn Torah…they instituted  that teachers of children should be established in Yerushalayim…But still, whoever had a father, [his father] ascended with him [to Jerusalem] and had him taught, but whoever did not have a father, he did not ascend and learn. They instituted  that they should be established  in each and every region, and they brought [the students] in at  age  the age of sixteen  and at  the age  of seventeen. Until Yehoshua ben Gamla came and instituted that teachers of children should be established in each and every province and in each and every town, and they would bring them in at the age of six and at the age of seven.” Meaning, although Yehoshua ben Gamla’s ordinance only applied to children from age six or seven, and only those who had no father Rachmana litzlan (a small minority of Jews), nevertheless, “If not for him the Torah would have been forgotten from the Jewish people.” Here we see how much the education of a small number of Jewish children affects the entire Jewish people. The lesson is that everyone must do everything in their power to establish chadarim for Jewish children in every city, and not to rely on the yeshivos for older students or on the assumption that the father will teach the child etc.

The baal haheilula [the Rebbe’s father whose yahrzeit is on 20 Menachem-Av] writes how every detail of his imprisonment was aligned according to Kabbalah. Seemingly, in light of the trait of humility, how is it appropriate for him to write this about himself – but he himself writes that everything is by Hashgacha Protis. And this serves as a fundamental lesson and a wondrous lesson that everything is by Hashgacha Protis; one must only “Lift your eyes up high,” and then he will see “Who created these.” Therefore, when a Jew reflects on his state and condition, and sees that “you are the fewest of all the peoples” and that most of his time is spent on matters unrelated to spirituality, etc., he must know that the world that he sees is nothing more than an outer shell, and the truth is that “Forever, Hashem, Your word stands in the heavens”; even a decision made by a non-Jew to is in accordance with the secrets of the Torah. When a person is imbued with this perspective, he will not be intimidated by “the big world.”

In connection with Aharon’s passing the verse states, “And all the Jewish people wept for Aharon…” – “because Aharon would pursue peace and instill love between people in conflict” etc. The lesson is to “Be among the students of Aharon” etc.; all matters of spreading Yiddishkeit must be done with love – “loving the creatures,” and in this way one will succeed in “drawing them close to the Torah.” And then Aharon’s Priestly Blessing (which he bestows upon the Jewish people with love) will be fulfilled.

1) [המשך] וההוראה: כאשר א' רואה במדבר הגלות "נחש שרף ועקרב" – צריך לזכור שה"גדול ונורא", ה', נותן לו כוח זה! (וכמ"ש בשיעור חומש דיום זה ששייך להיות "ושכחת את ה' אלקיך" עד כדי כך שאינו רואה ש"הוא הנותן לך כח לעשות חיל"). ואז יוכל לפעול שה"נחש שרף ועקרב" הזה לא רק ש"לא ירעו ולא ישחיתו" אלא עוד יסייע לכל א' בקיום תומ"צ וכו'. וזה גם מה שדובר לעיל אודות הפצת המעיינות עצמן, ש"מקור מים חיים" הוא הרי ה"גדול ונורא", הקב"ה – בתוך ה"חוצה" עצמו. 2) בפ' עקב כתוב ענין נפלא ש"לא בצדקתך וביושר לבבך אתה בא לרשת את ארצם כי ברשעת הגוים האלה ה' אלקיך מורישם מפניך ולמען הקים את הדבר אשר נשבע ה' לאבותיך וגו'". ואם רואים שה"רשעת הגויים האלה" קיים ותקיף והולף ומוסיף, הרי עאכו"כ שכ"ה בנוגע "למען הקים את הדבר אשר נשבע ה' וגו'". ועל כל יהודי להכריז בגלוי שארץ ישראל ניתן לישראל ע"י ה', ויש לאחוז בו בתוקף של "גדול ונורא", ועי"ז יתהפכו ה"נחש שרף ועקרב" לסייע לבנ"י להביאם לארצנו הק'.

(1) The lesson is that when a person sees “snakes, vipers, and scorpions” in the desert of exile, he must remember that Hashem, who is “great and awesome,” gives him the power to overcome them. (As it says in today’s Chumash, it is possible to “forget Hashem your G-d” to the extent that one doesn’t recognize that it is “He who gives you the strength to make wealth.”) And thus he will be able to cause the “snakes, vipers, and scorpions” to not only “neither harm nor destroy,” but even to assist every Jew in their fulfillment of Torah and mitzvos etc. This is also what was discussed earlier about spreading the wellsprings themselves; the “source of living waters,” Hashem, is “great and awesome” within the “outside” itself. (2) Parashas Eikev contains a wondrous idea: “You are coming to take possession of their land neither because of your righteousness nor because of the integrity of your heart. Rather, it is because of the wickedness of these nations that Hashem your G-d is driving them out from before you, and in order to fulfill the promise that Hashem swore to your forefathers….” – if one sees that the “wickedness of these nations” still exists and continues to intensify, then certainly that is the case regarding “in order to fulfill the promise that Hashem swore….” Every Jew must openly declare that Eretz Yisroel was given by Hashem to the Jewish people, and must hold onto it with the strength of the “great and awesome” one, and in this way the “snakes, vipers, and scorpions” will be transformed so that they will assist in bringing the Jewish people to our Holy Land.
