א) הוראה ממ"ש הרמב"ם בהל' בית הבחירה בנוגע לבנין ביהמ"ק "שמצוה מן המובחר לחזק את הבנין ולהגביהו כפי כח הציבור וכו'": אם יש לא' כשרונות מיוחדים עליו לנצלם במילואן לעבודת ה' בביהמ"ק הרוחני שלו! ב) בנוגע למ"ש בהתחלת פ' ואתחנן שמשה רבינו אמר להקב"ה "אתה החילות להראות את עבדך את גדלך וגו'" – שרק בזמנו של משה התחיל הקב"ה להראות את גדולתו וכו' – מקשה הזהר הרי היו נסים גם בזמנם של האבות?! ומתרץ: שדוקא בזמן משה היו מצבם של בנ"י באופן של גדלות – ציבור שלם ואחד של מליוני אנשים (אנשים נשים וטף)! וזהו גדלותו האמיתית של הקב"ה. וההוראה: על כ"א לפעול שבנ"י יהיו באחדות ע"י אהבת ישראל ועי"ז נעשה ה"גדלך" האמיתי, וזה צריך להתחיל מילדים!

(1) The Rambam writes in Hilchos Beis Habechirah: “The most preferable way to fulfill the mitzvah [of building the Beis Hamikdash] is by strengthening the building and raising it according to the community’s ability etc.” The lesson is that if someone has special talents, they must fully utilize it for serving Hashem in their spiritual Beis Hamikdash. (2) At the beginning of Parashas Va’eschanan, Moshe Rabbeinu says to Hashem, “You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness etc.” – indicating that it was only in Moshe’s time that Hashem began to show His greatness etc. The Zohar asks: Weren’t there also miracles in the times of the Patriarchs?! And he answers: it was only in Moshe’s time that the Jewish people attained greatness – because that’s when they became a complete and united community of millions of people (men, women, and children), and that is the true greatness of Hashem. The lesson is that everyone should see to it that the entire Jewish people are united through Ahavas Yisrael, and this is “Your greatness.” And it has to start with the children.

In some places the Arizal is called “Arizal Hachai” (the living Arizal), that is, immediately after saying “Za”l” (“May his memory be for a blessing”), the word “living” is added – adding to and strengthening his vitality, as the Alter Rebbe says, that on the day of a tzaddik’s passing, “All his deeds and teachings and service…are revealed and shine…and work salvations in the midst of the earth.” Every year on his yom hilula it is revealed more and more, and this is relevant especially. The second name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, was Yitzchok, which was the Arizal’s name; this name is associated (not with man’s service, like the name Yosef, but rather) with the reward for the service, and “the reward for a mitzvah is a mitzvah,” which is the greatest cause for “laughter.” The name was given because “whoever hears will rejoice over me” – even someone who hears, and “whoever hears,” becomes full of joy and laughter, thus purifying the world until it becomes imbued with the light of holiness in a manner of seeing, “And your eyes shall see your Teacher,” and thus the Nine Days will be transformed to festivals, and it will be revealed specifically down here, in the physical sense.

The Gemara in Shabbos states, “One who was born on the fifth day of the week will be a person who performs acts of kindness. What is the reason? Because on that day the fish and birds were created” Rashi explains, “They do not toil for their sustenance, rather they are sustained by the kindness of the Holy One, blessed be He.” All aspects of the seven days of creation are repeated anew every week (as we see regarding the Shir Shel Yom, where we recite “the song they would sing in the Beis Hamikdash” – which is the song related to the acts of creation of that day); since Hashem’s creation on the fifth day of the week emphasizes “acts of kindness,” therefore anyone born on that day will be “a person who performs acts of kindness.” The lesson is that while acts of kindness can be performed on many levels (“to satisfy one’s obligation,” “as it should be done”; “beyond the letter of the law” etc.) – but they can also be done in such a way as to “cleave to Him” and “His attributes” – in a manner of “the kindness of the Holy One, blessed be He.”

The name of the month is “Menachem-Av,” meaning that the entire month, from its beginning, already offers the “Menachem” (consolation) for the undesirable aspects of the month. This is especially emphasized in our time, when the Redemption is near, to the point that it must be clearly verbalized, which reveals and proclaims and announces everywhere that the time of “Menachem” is beginning. This year is also a leap year, which brings an additional entire month of Torah and mitzvos, thus nullifying “our sins” and thereby nullifying the result of our sins, namely, the fact that “we were exiled from our land,” and thus turning “their mourning into gladness.” Although joy is supposed to be diminished during the Three Weeks, however the joy derived from Torah study (“The orders of Hashem are upright, causing the heart to rejoice”) is a requirement, especially now when it’s necessary to exert special effort for the Redemption, as “Tzion shall be redeemed through justice (Torah) and those who return to it with tzedakah (which encompasses all the mitzvos)” and this should be done with joy.

It is appropriate to raise a timely issue: the halachos in Shulchan Aruch pertaining to the Nine Days, and particularly the laws of the week of Tisha B’Av. (Although Tisha B’Av this year is postponed to Sunday, and there’s a debate as to whether the entire preceding week is considered the week of Tisha B’Av, however, with regards to increasing in Torah study and tzedakah there’s no room for debate). Obviously this includes the obligation to learn these halachos, yet it’s astonishing that when a stir is made about increasing in Torah study during the Three Weeks, particularly Hilchos Beis Habechirah, no mention is made of studying the halachos of the Three Weeks! In accordance with the verse, “Tzion shall be redeemed through justice (Torah) and those who return to her with tzedakah” – there should be an increase in Torah study, as well as tzedakah, and particularly, giving tzedakah before davening. If the Alter Rebbe wrote that in his times the primary service was through tzedakah, because “The Jewish people are redeemed only through tzedakah,” how much more so nowadays when “all the end times have passed.” And especially at this time of year, when we daven to Hashem for the Redemption with even greater intensity. Whoever hears these words should endeavor not only to fulfill them on their own, but also to publicize them – to bring the “letter” of the Rebbe of our generation to each and every member of the generation.

(1) It is a good and proper thing to visit the resting place of the Arizal on his yahrzeit, 5 Av, and “The splendor of the King is in the multitude of the people,” and also to study his teachings as they are explained in Chabad Chassidus, to daven there and give tzedakah there, and to do it all communally. In the Holy Land it should be done at his physical resting place, but it should also be done everywhere; just as Hashem placed Himself in His Torah, such that by studying Torah, “you take Me,” so it is with tzaddikim who “resemble their Creator” and their teachings. “These are the journeys of the Jewish people who left the land of Egypt, etc.” Just like in the generation that left Egypt there were forty-two journeys until they came to the Yarden at Yericho, so too in the life of every individual, and so too in every individual’s service of Torah and mitzvos. Just as the majority of the journeys took place in the “great and fearful desert,” so it is with everyone’s Divine service; therefore, it is necessary for “Moshe to write the starting points for their journeys” – Moshe’s essence is Torah (which comes from above to below), and he draws down (from the level of “engraving” to the level of “writing”) “their starting points” – the source and origin of every Jew, i.e., the essence of the soul, and brings it down into souls within bodies, as they stand in the “desert of the nations.” This gives them the strength to pass through the forty-two journeys in the desert, etc. But the ultimate purpose is the subsequent elevation from below to above, as the verse concludes, “and these were their journeys with their starting points”: as a result of the journeys, they are elevated to the level of “their starting points” and even higher than that, because the descent is for the sake of ascent. This ascent is achieved through the service of tefilah. This is why it says “these are the journeys” in the plural, because even after leaving constraints and limitations of the first journey from “the land of Egypt,” it’s necessary to continue to rise from strength to strength until reaching the other side of the Yarden etc.

[Continued.] There’s a caveat: being that there are differences of opinion regarding faith and religion, instilling the belief in the Creator and Ruler of the world must be done in a way that isn’t associated with any specific religion. This can be done by instituting a moment of silence in schools, dedicated to thought and reflection about the Creator and Ruler of the world, but without a verbal prayer or anything that could cause disagreements among the administration or students – and the parents will tell the children what to think about during the moment of silence. It should be instituted in the universities etc. as well, especially considering the current situation in the universities. Unfortunately, even in some religious schools, the focus is on providing students with knowledge of Torah and mitzvos, but without attention to faith, love, and fear of Hashem. It’s important that the day begin with davening and contemplation of Hashem’s greatness. Fortunate is the lot and great is the merit of those working toward this end, and those who have any influence in this regard should utilize it to the fullest etc.

[המשך] בדורות שלפנינו קיבל הנער החינוך לערכים בביתו ושלחו אותו לבית-ספר רק להוסיף לו ידיעות בעניני מדע וכיו"ב, אבל כיום (שלהורים "אין זמן" לחינוכו של הנער) חינוך הנער הוא תחת אחריותם של בתי-הספר! ודוקא שם מעמידים "מסך של ברזל" ולא נותנים להקב"ה "להיכנס"... בנוגע לטענה אודות "חוקת-היסוד" כו' – הנה החוקה נקבעה ע"י אלו שמטרת בואם למדינה זו היתה כדי שיוכלו לנהל את חייהם עפ"י דתם באין מפריע, ואין מקום לומר שכווונתם היתה שבבתי-ספר לא יתנו להזכיר אודות מציאות של בורא העולם!; בחוקה נאמר שהיא נקבעה "לטובתה של האומה", ואם מצב האומה השתנה – הילד כבר לא מקבל בביתו את התודעה ש"עין רואה ואוזן שומעת", ורואים שאחוז הפשיעה אצל הנוער הולך וגדל וכו' – הרי "טובתה של האומה" מחייבת לעשות משהו בנידון, ובפרט שבחוקה עצמה מפורש שניתן לעשות בו שינויים בהתאם לשינויי המצבים וכו'. יש לציין את ענין החיובי שנשיא המדינה הכריז שיש להכניס לבתי-ספר את ההכרה בבורא עולם ומנהיגו. In previous generations, children learned values from their parents at home, and schools was meant to teach them about science etc. But today (when parents “don’t have time” to teach their children), the children’s education is the responsibility of the schools. Yet specifically in the schools, an “iron curtain” is erected, so as not to allow G-d in…. They argue that the Constitution requires etc., but the Constitution was established by people who came to this country to practice their religion without persecution. Thus, there is no basis for the notion that they intended to forbid in schools the mention of the Creator of the universe! Moreover, the Constitution was written “for the people,” and it expressly allows for amendment when circumstances change. Therefore, when the situation has changed, such that children are no longer taught at home that there’s a “seeing eye and listening ear,” and we see that the crime rate among the youth is rising etc., the good of the people requires doing something about it. A recent positive development is that the President of the United States has issued a call to allow the recognition of G-d to be taught in public schools. [To be continued.]
