There are two interpretations in the Midrash on the verse (in sheini of parashas Ekev): “Who led you through the great and awesome desert, snakes, vipers, scorpions etc.” One is that “great and awesome” refers to the desert, and the other is that it refers to Hashem. The connection between them is as follows: That Hashem is “great and awesome” is expressed specifically in the fact that the Jewish people traveled through the desert, a place of “snakes, vipers and scorpions” without being harmed. Some argue: we find themselves in a double and redoubled darkness, literally in a “great and awesome desert,” the proof being that specifically in recent generations it has become necessary to study the inner dimension of Torah in order to overcome the darkness, and the darkness intensifies from generation to generation, which is why it was necessary to increase in the spreading of the wellsprings by the Rebbe Nishmaso Eden establishing Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim and by my father-in-law the Rebbe translating the inner dimension of Torah into the seventy languages etc. But the response is that they must know the second interpretation of the verse, that “great and awesome” refers to Hashem: it is precisely when there are “snakes, vipers, and scorpions,” and nevertheless, not only do they not cause harm, but they assist the Jewish people, that Hashem’s greatness is expressed. After stating that on the fifteenth of Av they stopped chopping down trees for the wood arrangement, the Gemara adds, “From the fifteenth of Av onward…one who adds will be added to.” Rashi explains: “From the fifteenth of Av onward, one who adds nights to the days to engage in Torah study will have life added to his life,” meaning that from the fifteenth of Av one begins to increase in Torah study at night, and therefore he is granted additional life beyond the life he already possesses. In terms of Divine service: one who finds himself in a state of darkness and in the state of the “night” of “Tishah b’Av,” meaning the Beis Hamikdash within him is destroyed – he has no vitality in Torah study and mitzvah observance – but nevertheless he adds in Torah study, is promised that “one who adds will be added to”: he will be granted additional life, meaning not only will he regain the vitality he had before the state of “night,” but even more – he will gain the advantage of light that comes from the darkness. And therefore, “There were no days as happy for the Jewish people as the fifteenth of Av” (which follows Tisha B’Av) specifically.

On the Mishnah “From when does one recite Shema in the evenings,” the Gemara asks why the Mishna starts with the evening rather than morning, and the answer is that it is based on the order in creation, as the verse states, “There was evening and there was morning, one day.” But the question remains: why was the world created that way? This teaches us that when a person looks around and sees the darkness in the world, and he wonders, what can one individual accomplish in the face of such darkness – the answer from the Torah is that this is the order that Hashem established from the very beginning of creation, that “evening” and “darkness” come before “morning” and “light,” and that a Jew, through his service, must illuminate the darkness. The beginning of this service (in the “Oral Torah”) is reciting Kerias-Shema, which begins with the verse, “Hear, O Israel: Hashem is our G-d, Hashem is One” – Hashem gives every Jew the power to make it evident that everything is created by Hashem (Hashem is One), and to express it in the ches (the seven heavens and the earth) and the daled (the four directions). This gives a Jew the strength not to fear the world, but to see it as a place where one is to make a dwelling for Hashem in the lower realms. And similarly with regard to the “evenings” of the soul’s descent into the body: it is not chas v’shalom in order to afflict the soul, but to bring about “Kerias-Shema” within “the evenings.”

(Continued.) The proof that the Redemption and Techias Hameisim will indeed take place in a manner of transformation (“There will yet be elderly men and elderly women sitting in the streets of Yerushalayim”), even though it doesn’t necessarily have to happen that way, lies in the fact that “the prophecy of Uriyah has been fulfilled,” that “Tzion was plowed like a field”: In the destruction of the second Beis Hamikdash, nothing remained of the structure except wood and stones (unlike the destruction of the first Beis Hamikdash), but it was only because it was razed to the foundation and plowed that the place became fit for sowing and growth. Fron this Rabbi Akiva proved that the Redemption will take place in a manner of transformation. Although the prophecy itself also alludes to transformation (“There will yet be elderly men and elderly women…”), however, we find that due to certain causes (such as the fact that “it was in their power to protest and they did not protest” at the time of the destruction of the first Beis Hamikdash) it is possible for even a positive prophecy to potentially not be fulfilled. But this doesn’t apply when the fulfillment of the prophecy has already begun physically. Therefore, since Yeshayahu, who said “And I will take to Me faithful witnesses: Uriyah the Kohen and Zecharyah the son of Yevarechyahu” combined the two prophecies into one (like two witnesses whose testimony become one), when Rabbi Akiva saw that “Tzion was plowed like a field” in actuality, he knew that the continuation of the prophecy, “There will yet be elderly men and elderly women...” would be fulfilled – Redemption in a manner of transformation. This comes about as a result of every individual’s redemption in their personal divine service being in a manner of transformation.

The conclusion of Masechta Makkos states: “It once was that Rabban Gamliel, Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya, Rabbi Yehoshua, and Rabbi Akiva were walking along the road…When they arrived at the Temple Mount, they saw a fox that emerged from the site of the Holy of Holies. They began weeping, and Rabbi Akiva was laughing…They said to him: This is the place of which it is written: “And the layman who approaches shall die,” and now foxes walk in it; and shall we not weep? He said to them: That is why I am laughing, as it is written: “And I will take to Me faithful witnesses to attest: Uriah the Kohen, and Zechariah ben Yevarchiyahu.” Now, what is the connection between Uriah and Zechariah…Rather, the verse hinged the fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah on the fulfillment of the prophecy of Uriah. In the prophecy of Uriah it is written: “Therefore, for your sake Tzion will be plowed as a field.” In Zechariah it is written: “There will yet be elderly men and elderly women sitting in the streets of Yerushalayim.” Until the prophecy of Uriah was fulfilled, I was afraid that the prophecy of Zechariah would not be fulfilled. Now that the prophecy of Uriah was fulfilled, it is evident that the prophecy of Zechariah remains valid. They said to him: Akiva, you have comforted us; Akiva, you have comforted us.” Rabbi Akiva here is not bringing proof for the Redemption and Techias Hameisim themselves, because they are stated explicitly in the Written Torah. Rather, he is bringing proof as to the manner in which they will occur: Conceptually, Techias Hameisim could occur in a manner similar to the state of Gan Eden before the sin, meaning, the abolition of death, as a result of which the dead would be resurrected in a state of optimum strength and health. But since Zechariah’s prophecy states that “There will yet be elderly men and elderly women sitting in the streets of Yerushalayim,” that proves that there will be an even greater novelty – the fact that they will arise as “elderly men and elderly women,” and yet they will become strong enough to be “sitting in the streets of Yerushalayim” like young people. (To be continued).

The Aseres HaDibros (in revi’i of parashas Va’eschanan) begin with “I am Hashem your G-d” and conclude with “You shall not desire…anything that belongs to your fellow,” and they are specifically stated in detail and clearly, in six hundred and twenty letters, corresponding to the 613 Biblical mitzvos and the seven Rabbinic mitzvos. The clear lesson is that just as one must be careful to fulfill Hashem’s command in matters that are between man and G-d (“I am Hashem your G-d”), so must one be equally careful with all of the Aseres HaDibros, including those that are seemingly matters between man and his fellow. This applies not only when it comes to another Jew’s soul or body, but even when it comes to his possessions, and even unvaluable possessions – “…and anything that belongs to your fellow.” By increasing in our fulfillment of this directive, we hasten the fulfillment of Moshe’s request to enter Eretz Yisroel, “Va’eschanan (‘I entreated Hashem at that time’)…,” with the true and complete Redemption literally right now.

Today’s Rambam describes the laws of what is prohibited to be offered on the Mizbeach. The Rambam writes, “Thus, there are fourteen types of animals that are forbidden as sacrifices for the altar: a blemished animal, one that is not choice etc.” The commentators ask: why doesn’t the Rambam include in the list three other types of animals that he previously stated were forbidden for the altar? One answer is that those three types of animals are included within the fourteen categories listed, but the questions remains: why didn’t the Rambam simply list them all individually and write that there are seventeen types of animals forbidden as sacrifices? The answer is that when the Rambam writes the number of items in a list, the purpose is to help the student remember the material, and therefore he chooses a number with a special significance, to make it easier to remember. Therefore, here he combines some types into a single category because he wanted the number to be fourteen, which spells yad (hand), a number with special significance, as seen in the fact that the Rambam divided his Yad Hachazakah into fourteen books, and the fact that the word “hand” is associated with Torah (which was “Given by His right hand”) and mitzvos (which are divided into positive mitzvos and negative mitzvos (the right hand the left hand). By avoiding these fourteen forbidden categories in the spiritual sense, we abolish “the hand that was sent forth against Your sanctuary,” and thus “immediately (mi’yad) they will be redeemed.”

The mission of our times is to abolish the exile by undoing the cause of the exile. The cause of the destruction of the first Beis Hamikdash was the sin of neglecting Torah study – “they did not first recite a blessing on the Torah” – because the bracha on Torah (“Who has given us His Torah…the Giver of the Torah”) emphasizes that Torah study is not a matter of “my strength and the might of my hand” but Hashem’s wisdom. Thus, we can undo the cause of the exile by studying Torah in a way that emphasizes the Giver of the Torah. The cause of the destruction of the second Beis Hamikdash was baseless hatred, which is counted with Ahavas Yisroel. One must know that discord between Jews is a scheme of the yetzer hara to sow discord between the Jewish people and their Father in Heaven. We must therefore fight discord, remembering that “The Torah was given to bring peace to the world.” One must also remember that “the seal of Hashem is truth,” and it is only permitted to “depart” from the truth for the sake of peace, but not to lie. Thus we find that Aharon HaKohen, who “loved peace and pursued peace” would go to each of the two people involved in a dispute and tell them that the other had remorse and wanted to make peace: Aharon HaKohen was merely revealing the truth, because deep down both sides really did wish to make peace (because every Jew wishes to fulfill the desire of Hashem). It is only called a “departure” from the truth because Aharon told each side that peace was the other’s outward desire too, which was not yet the case, but it was not a lie chas v’shalom.

The Midrash states, “On the seventh of the month…gentiles entered the Sanctuary, and they ate and drank and desecrated in it.” The Torah tells us this so that by remembering these events, we will correct the cause of the destruction, and then automatically the destruction will be undone. When Jewish children conduct themselves in such a way that they don’t deserve to be in exile, they will leave the exile, together with the entire Jewish people and together with the Shechinah, as the Midrash states, “Come and see how beloved children are before the Holy One, blessed be He…when the children were exiled, the Shechinah was exiled with them.” (2) Today’s Tehillim states, “And I will come to the altar of G-d…Why are you downcast, my soul, and why are you perturbed within me? Hope to G-d…” – when a Jew is perturbed and wonders how it’s possible that after hundreds of years in exile Moshiach Tzidkeinu will arrive in a single moment, he is told, “Hope to G-d” – it is clear that by trusting in Hashem, “I will come to the altar of G-d…” literally right now.

The Gemara states (Gittin 56b) that after Rabban Yochanan ben Zakai saw that the heavenly decree that, “the Levanon [the Beis Hamikdash] will fall by a mighty one” was going to be fulfilled, he asked Vespasian, “Give me Yavne and its Sages,” as a substitute for the Beis Hamikdash, as our Sages said, “Since the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed, the Holy One, blessed be He, has only the four cubits of halachah.” Since “Yavne and its Sages” hasten the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash, it emerges that even before the actual destruction, the opposing side had already agreed to the undoing of the destruction. Although one must always remember that the whole concept of exile is a punishment and unparalleled suffering and distress, and certainly exile is not the natural state of the Jewish people chas v’shalom and one must constantly “yearn… for the days of Moshiach,” when the entire Jewish people will “attain knowledge of their Creator” – but it is not enough to merely lament the exile: one must do everything in their power to nullify the darkness of the exile by studying Torah and performing mitzvos. Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai’s unique contribution was that he arranged the “remedy before the blow” by securing “Yavneh and its Sages,” the four cubits of halachah.
