    Synopsis

When one is a solder, especially when he is stationed on the border to protect from those outside the border, it is always evident that he is a soldier, in a proper army of which the verse states (in revi’i of parashas Ki Seitzei), “Hashem, your G-d, goes in the midst of your camp….” And then (in most cases), the soldier’s very presence on the border to defend against the enemy, who knows that there is a soldier stationed there, already fulfills his role, even when the solder is eating, drinking, or sleeping. Nevertheless, this, too, requires standing strong: the army may be only a small force compared to the armies of other nations, but as with the fact that “You are the fewest of all the nations,” this applies only in quantity, not quality, because the Jewish people possess a G-dly soul, and “I will be your G-d,” to the extent that “Hashem, your G-d goes in the midst of your camp… and your camp will be holy.” With this quality, they can overcome the numerical superiority of others (and this concept is reflected even in the world at large, where the outcome of a war depends on the quality of the weapons and the people using them rather than the quantity). This also applies to every Jew who finds himself “on the border” between spirituality and materiality etc.

    Synopsis

(Continued.) They claim that women and girls, too, should receive an aliyah to the Torah etc. But while it’s true that receiving an aliyah is a very great thing, Hashem says it is not for women; to the contrary, they receive their aliyah (“ascendence”) precisely when they don’t get called up the Torah but rather respond Amen to the blessings over the Torah recited by the men. And not only should a woman not feel inferior to her husband, but to the contrary – the Torah established that the husband needs her assistance. In general, it is the woman who takes the wheat brought home by the husband and turns it to bread that is fit to eat, and this is especially true when it comes to raising and educating the children; in the future, “the woman will court the man,” and as Rabbi Akiva said, “Mine and yours are hers!” The time has come for women and girls to protest: How can it be that millions of children in this country are educated in schools without even knowing about Hashem’s “seeing eye and listening ear”?! They should firmly demand that a moment of silence be instituted at the start of every school day, and parents should tell their children to use that moment to think about the Creator of the world and about the fact that there is a “seeing eye and listening ear.”

    Synopsis

There are those who claim that there is inequality in the Torah between men and women, and therefore they’ve established an entire movement for “women’s liberation.” But the truth is that specifically this movement has caused the deepest feelings of inferiority among women, because the most demeaning thing is to tell a person that they are not allowed to live and act in accordance with their unique personality and traits, but must instead imitate someone else. The Torah establishes [in sheini of parashas Ki Seitzei]: “A many may not wear a woman’s garment,” and similarly, “A man’s attire must not be worn by a woman” – everyone has their own importance and unique mission, and attains their completion by fulfilling their mission. The Torah has granted the woman the loftiest mission – to give birth to children and raise a new generation that will serve as a continuation of the generation of Matan Torah; it is precisely when she does this that she fulfills her primary role and achieves her personal completeness. True, engaging in business is one of the activities of the Eishes Chayil – “She makes garments and sells...” – but (only if she does so in order to enable her husband to study Torah, and even then), it must not come at the expense of her main role as the mainstay of the home, giving birth to and educating children. And this is what girls must be educated for. (To be continued.)

    Synopsis

When a Jewish child asks, how can I find the strength to not be intimidated by the nations and by “your enemies,” meaning the yetzer-hara, whose mission is to deter a Jew from Torah and mitzvos, which it does by presenting itself as a friend etc. – the answer appears at the beginning of parashas Ki Seitzei, “When you go out to war against your enemies…”: Hashem tells the Jewish people that although there is a war against the yetzer hara, nevertheless the moment a Jew decides to go out to war against it (“When you go out to war”), he is already “al oivecha” (“above your enemies”), such that the Jew has the upper hand and it is easy to defeat the yetzer. Moreover, “you will take captives”: anything the yetzer-hara has conquered will be returned to the Jewish people, and similarly regarding the Beis Hamikdash, which very soon will return from its “captivity.”

    Synopsis

    (1) The Torah says that “anyone who is fearful and fainthearted” “must go and return to his house” (because even if it’s possible to work with him so that he ceases to be fearful and fainthearted, by the time that happens he is liable to cause harm). Even assuming that the people urging to return land have good intentions, nevertheless there is a clear ruling in Shulchan Aruch (Siman 329), and we have already seen in practice the great troubles that have resulted from the various withdrawals. According to nature, there is no other way to eliminate the pressure from the nations except by showing that the pressure doesn’t help – by settling all the territories. (2) Some people complained that during the Purim farbrengen, when discussing those who are “fearful and fainthearted,” I used the expression, “so as not to cause the heart of his brothers to become faint,” whereas the verse’s wording is, “so as not to cause the heart of his brothers to melt like his heart.” My wording was deliberate, for several reasons: (i) To avoid the issue of, “Matters that were written, you may not say them by heart”; (ii) because of the concept of “not opening one’s mouth [to the Satan],” being that “melting” is more severe than becoming “faint”; (iii) the verse is talking about someone who is already in actual combat, in which case the concern is that his heart will “melt,” whereas before going to war – and similarly in this case – the concern is only that his heart will become “faint.” And in response to those who complained about my statement that those who are clamoring for the return of the territories etc. are doing so because they don’t want to give up their seat in the government – I didn’t say that this applies to all of them; many of them are doing so because they are “fearful and fainthearted.” In any case, it is necessary to get them to stop clamoring for it…and to stand firmly and actually settle all the territories in the border areas, in accordance with the ruling of the Shulchan Aruch.

    Synopsis

How is it that when Moshiach comes and the spirit of impurity will be removed from the earth, there will be a need for three more cities of refuge (as it says in chamishi of parashas Shoftim), “for any murderer to flee there”? It is explained in Kisvei Ha’Arizal that the reason killings occur throughout the generations is because death was decree upon Hevel (at the hands of Kayin) “and upon all his descendants,” and if Moshiach will come by Hashem “hastening it” – before the appointed time – and the seed of Hevel will not yet have been fully remedied, their remedy will be to be killed after the coming of Moshiach, resulting in a rise in the number of accidental killers (especially being that the remedy will have to occur quickly), and therefore three additional cities of refuge will be required. Such an explanation is understandable even to a five-year-old studying Scripture based on Rashi’s earlier explanation on the verse, “and G-d brought it about into his hand”: Rashi explains that when one person kills another accidentally, it is because the victim deserved the death penalty for a past sin, while the killer deserved to be exiled for a past sin; it is similarly understood that the cities of refuge in the future are intended for anyone throughout all generations who required atonement through death or exile but hasn’t yet received it.

    Synopsis

    (1) A directive from the opening verse of parashas Shoftim, “You must appoint for yourselves judges and officers in all your cities”: every Jew must appoint his yetzer-tov as a “judge” to show him how to behave properly, and “officers” to ensure that the directives of the judge are carried out. Then the yetzer-hara will not be able to come to a Jew and confuse him by telling him that nobody is watching etc., and this should be done with joy, as it is written: “The Jewish people should rejoice in its Maker” – rejoicing in “the joy of Hashem, Who rejoices and is happy in His dwelling place in this world.” (2) Revi’i of parashas Shoftim concludes, “Be wholehearted with Hashem, your G-d.” Rashi explains, “Follow Him with simple faith…and then you will be with Him and be His portion.” Since “you will be with Him and be His portion” – “an actual portion of Hashem from above” – therefore one surely possesses the strength and ability to overcome all challenges and to fulfill his mission completely.

Together with all the good resolutions, one should start right away with something practical: (1) Every Jewish boy and girl should have their own siddur, with the world לה' הארץ ומלואה (“The earth and everything in it belongs to Hashem”) and the child’s Jewish name inscribed on the front page (a siddur contains tefillah as well as verses from the Torah), and also their own tzedakah box, into which they should place a coin every weekday. (2) One should resolve that the first thought, word, and action of the day will be for Hashem. (3) Every boy should influence at least one other boy to begin wearing a tallis katan, and every girl should influence at least one other girl to begin lighting Shabbos and Yom Tov candles. This will illuminate the world and bring about “an end to darkness” through the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu, which will be hastened by every one of you adding in matters of Yiddishkeit. And even during these last days of exile, every one of you, your parents, and the entire Jewish people will be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year.

A lesson from the opening verse of parashas Shoftim, “You must appoint judges and officers for yourselves in all your gates…”: “In all your gates,” meaning in all aspects of a person’s life – thought, speech, and action – one must appoint a “judge” and an “officer,” meaning one must judge with his intellect what is permitted and what is forbidden, and then he must have the force to carry out the judge’s decision in practice. By every Jew appointing judges and officers in all his gates, we will very soon merit the fulfillment of this mitzvah in the literal sense, with the true and complete Redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu.

The Alter Rebbe famously compares the month of Elul to the “Analogy of a king who, before coming to the city, the people of the city go out to greet him and they receive him in the field, and then whoever wishes is permitted (and the Rebbe, my father-in-law adds: and able) to greet him etc.” (And this begins from the first night of Rosh Chodesh Elul.) Obviously, one must be a proper “vessel” for this, and especially by perfecting all three garments of thought, speech, and action: “With all your heart (thought), with all your soul (speech) and with all your might (action).” (All three are also emphasized in the Rambam’s statement about the special status of the tribe of Levi, and how “not only the tribe of Levi, but every single individual…whose spirit generously moves him… is sanctified as holy of holies.”) But action is the main thing. And this is connected to the month of Elul, when the “people of the city” are in the field, where the primary focus is on action, etc., and the “King” comes there – in such a way that “a king is subservient to the field,” in the positive sense. May it be Hashem’s will that we go immediately together with the “king” to Eretz Yisroel, to Yerushalayim, the holy city, and to the Beis Hamikdash, with the true and complete Redemption.
