    Synopsis

No matter one’s physical or spiritual state, every Jew has the ability conduct himself in an enlivened manner and to bring vitality to his surroundings, and to do it with joy. This applies even when one sees undesirable conduct in those around him, because, while one can make no mistake regarding his own failings (provided that he makes an honest accounting etc.), when it comes to someone else, “A person does not know what is in his fellow’s heart.” Thus, even when he sees undesirable conduct in another Jew, he doesn’t know what that Jew is thinking in the moment, and perhaps his thought nullified the severity of the deed. (It is only a judge who “has only what his eyes see,” and who must render judgment and administer punishment etc. according to what his eyes see.) And since there is doubt as to the other Jew’s deed, one is obligated to “judge every person favorably.” Accordingly, it is clear that despite the other Jew’s conduct, one must be in a state of great joy, and this is certainly the case when such an approach will lead him to help the other person, beginning with helping him physically.

    Synopsis

One of the five events that occurred on 17 Tammuz is the cessation of the Tamid offering. This has a special connection to chamishi of parashas Pinchas, which discusses the commandment of the Tamid offering, and being that “Whoever engages in studying the law of the Olah offering is considered as though he brought an Olah offering,” reading the Parashas HaTamid in the Torah also contributes to the undoing of cessation of the Tamid offering. This can also be connected to the fact that on 17 Tammuz the city was breached: the essential point and soul of the entire city of Yerushalayim is the Beis Hamikdash, and the essential point of the Beis Hamikdash is the bringing of the korbanos, which begin and end every day with the Tamid offering in the morning and afternoon (similar to a wall that surrounds and encompasses everything in the city etc.).

    Synopsis

    (1) The verse states (in shelishi of parashas Pinchas), “You must give a larger inheritance to the large [tribe] and you must give a smaller inheritance to a smaller one,” an approach based on reason. But at the same time, it says, “Nonetheless, the land must be divided by lot,” an approach that transcends reason. The lesson is that while the Torah requires a Jew to conduct himself according to nature, at the same time a Jew must know and reveal the truth – that nature itself comes from Hashem. (2) When the land was divided up (in fulfilment of Hashem’s promise during the Bris Bein Habesarim – a covenant that cannot be altered), we find that the Jewish women had an even greater love for Eretz Yisroel than the men, and therefore Tzelofchad’s daughters came to Moshe to demand and request a portion in the land, and their request was fulfilled. Similarly, in every generation and every era, the women must approach the Nasi of the generation with a pidyon stating that their desire and demand is to receive a portion in the land. Then, the Nasi of the generation will bring their demand to Hashem, and Hashem will accept it. Thus we will immediately merit the coming of “Pinchas, who is Eliyahu,” to herald the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu.

    Synopsis

    (1) Our Sages derive from the story (in Parshas Pinchas) of Tzelofchad’s daughters that the Jewish women of that time had greater love for Eretz Yisroel than the men. The lesson for Jewish women in our times is that during exile, when one sees the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash, even within Eretz Yisroel itself – the task is to feel a longing to return to the state of revelation of G-dliness, which is the special quality of Eretz Yisroel, the land that “the eyes of Hashem your G-d are upon it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.” This means that it should be visible in every aspect of her home that “ “Behold, Hashem stands… and watches” etc. (2) The Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, instituted that during the summer months, the bochurim and young married men should travel to various places to speak about Yiddishkeit, etc., and the Rebbe, the Nasi of the generation, arouses mercy that they should succeed, and in such a way that will also leave behind fruits and fruits of fruits. When the journey begins with a chassidishe farbrengen and from within the expansiveness of the Nasi of the Jewish people Israel—the entire journey is conducted in a manner of expansiveness. Therefore, those traveling should say l’chaim, and their journey should be in the manner of “For with joy shall you go forth…the mountains and the hills shall burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field shall clap hands.

    Synopsis

    (1) A Jew must never lose heart because of the darkness of exile; he must always remember that the Jewish people are “My firstborn son,” and when he sees something undesirable, this itself emphasizes how great Hashem’s love of the Jewish people is, “like the analogy of a great and awesome king who personally in his glory washes the filth of his only son out of his great love.” However, this lofty goodness must also be revealed to the physical eye, by revealing the level of “Chasid” (a title which cannot really be used even regarding Hashem when He exacts punishment etc.), to the point that the Jewish people praise Hashem for being “Chasid,” because (as it says in Tehillim, written by Dovid Hamelech, the Sweet Singer of Israel, who “lives and endures”), “He tells His word to Yaakov, His statutes and His judgments to the Jewish people” – “What He does, He tells the Jewish people to do,” and the following kapitel states, “He raised up a horn for His people, praise to all His pious ones,” meaning the quality of “Chasid” is openly revealed among the Jewish people. (2) The name of parashah “Pinchas” emphasizes the connection to the future Redemption, for “Pinchas is Eliyahu,” who will herald the Redemption. And an additional lesson is derived from the verse (in rishon of parashas Pinchas), “Distress the Midianites, etc.” – to fight with the utmost force against all “strife and discord,” baseless hatred, which was the cause of the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash. And we are promised that “not a man among us will be missing.”

    Synopsis

In the selichos for 17 Tammuz, before reciting the special piyutim for the day, we say three verses: (1) “And give Him no rest, until He establishes and until He makes Yerushalayim a praise in the land.” (2) “For with You is the source of life; in Your light we will see light.” (3) “Our G-d, we are ashamed of our deeds and disgraced by our iniquities.” The order is precise: We begin with making a stir about “Giving Him no rest” –we cannot allow Hashem to remain silent, and we must entreat Him “until He establishes and until He makes Yerushalayim a praise in the earth.” And if one asks how it’s appropriate to address Hashem this way – comes the second verse and says, “For with You… in Your light we will see light” – it is the Torah, which is “Your light” and which illuminates the path for a Jew, that declares to “Give Him no rest….”And only afterwards is one calmed, so that he is able to do complete teshuvah – “Our G-d, we are ashamed….” Obviously, the main focus of 17 Tammuz is to “Give Him no rest,” etc., because regarding teshuvah, (1) “The essence of teshuvah is in the heart,” so the moment one decides that “Our G-d, we are ashamed,” etc., that already constitutes complete teshuvah, and (2) the very act of turning to Hashem to “Give Him no rest,” etc. is itself true teshuvah.

    Synopsis

Regarding the Redemption the verse says, “From the east I will bring your seed, and from the west I will gather you. I will say to the north, ‘Give,’ and to the south, ‘Do not refrain…’” Regarding the east and west, it says that Hashem will bring and gather them from there, and regarding the south it says that there will be no obstruction from that side. But regarding the north it says, “I will say to the north, ‘Give,’” meaning the north itself will assist in the Redemption. We also saw this in the redemption of 12 Tammuz (in a country that is to the north of Eretz Yisroel) – that the government itself assisted in the liberation. Moreover, the Rebbe set conditions for his release, refusing to travel on Shabbos and refusing to leave the country without all the sefarim and manuscripts, and the government was forced to comply. This also serves as a lesson as to how the true and complete Redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu will take place, as it says in the Haftorah of parashas Balak: although the Jewish people will be in the state of “the remnant of Yaakov in the midst of many peoples,” and “like a lion among the beasts of the forest,” nevertheless, the Redemption will come about in such a way that the Jewish people “will not hope for any man and not wait for the sons of man” – they will not seek anyone’s permission. And specifically from the place where there are people in despair, Rachmana litzlan, the verse says, “I will say to the north, ‘Give,’” and very soon.

    Synopsis

The baal hageulah enacted takanos (and every takanah enacted by the Sages is part of the Torah, all the more so takanos enacted by a Nasi of the Jewish people) including takanos in Torah (the takanah of Chitas), in tefillah (to engage in the service of tefillah, going beyond the requirement of “Knowing before Whom you stand), and in gemilus chassadim. The daily Chumash for Thursday of Parshas Balak, states, “Hashem their G-d is with them, and they have the King’s friendship”: Even if the Jewish people behave in an undesirable manner (as Rashi explains), one must know that “Hashem their G-d is with them,” and the verse emphasizes that He is “their G-d.” Moreover, “they have the King’s friendship,” all of His affection as a King is directed toward them alone, and as Rashi adds, “So translates Onkelos, ‘The presence of their King is among them,’” meaning the King dwells in and is clothed within them.

    Synopsis

(Continued.) From time to time, Hashem performs open miracles; in our generation it began with 13 Tammuz and the events that followed, all of which resulted from a Jew firmly deciding not to take into account anything that opposes Yiddishkeit, because the reality is that anything that opposes Yiddishkeit has no control over a Jew whatsoever. And if a Jew was “taken captive among the nations,” and he argues that he has never heard about this before, the response is that his connection to Torah and Yiddishkeit began before he entered this situation and before he was born, because when he was in his mother’s womb, “A candle was lit above his head... and he was taught the entire Torah.” This is his true reality, and the world has no power to change it; he is simply called upon to return to his true reality. And it would be a shame for him to wait until he understands it; rather, “We will do” must come before “We will hear,” and ultimately he will come to understand it as well. Especially because he himself knows that his great-grandparents and the generations before them lived this way, sacrificing their lives for it. This is the lesson from the liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which he instructed to print and publicize, that every Jew was liberated as part of the same liberation that he experienced. And all of this is bolstered even more when we gather in a place of Torah and a place of davening, and the place where he learned and davened; “holiness does not depart from its place,” and “Just as his offspring is alive, he too is alive.”

    Synopsis

The lesson from the imprisonment and liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, is that a Jew can only fulfill his purpose when is a free person. Since the Exodus from Egypt a Jew is inherently free (even the external limitations exist only to give him free will so that he can choose to keep Torah and mitzvos as a free person). As the Rebbe emphasized, even in prison he demonstrated that he was not deterred by his imprisonment at all, and in all matters of Hashem, Torah, and mitzvos, he remained a free person, as he proclaimed openly on 3 Tammuz before being sent into “exile” – “Only our bodies were placed into in exile and subjugation to the nations,” and even then, it was by Hashem; therefore it is understood that exile has no control over a Jew in all matters of Yiddishkeit, and this approach led to his complete liberation after a very short time. The lesson is that even a Jew who finds himself “forced by his inclination” or who was “taken captive among the gentiles” etc., in essence he remains a free person, and a child and servant of Hashem, and it is certain that “none who is banished will remain banished.” We are especially empowered in this regard by the liberation of 12-13 Tammuz, which is a liberation for every Jew, even one who is only “called by the name ‘Israel.’” (To be continued.)

Excerpt from sichah of Monday night, parashas Balak, 13 Tammuz 5745.
