The lesson from the imprisonment and liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, is that a Jew can only fulfill his purpose when is a free person. Since the Exodus from Egypt a Jew is inherently free (even the external limitations exist only to give him free will so that he can choose to keep Torah and mitzvos as a free person). As the Rebbe emphasized, even in prison he demonstrated that he was not deterred by his imprisonment at all, and in all matters of Hashem, Torah, and mitzvos, he remained a free person, as he proclaimed openly on 3 Tammuz before being sent into “exile” – “Only our bodies were placed into in exile and subjugation to the nations,” and even then, it was by Hashem; therefore it is understood that exile has no control over a Jew in all matters of Yiddishkeit, and this approach led to his complete liberation after a very short time. The lesson is that even a Jew who finds himself “forced by his inclination” or who was “taken captive among the gentiles” etc., in essence he remains a free person, and a child and servant of Hashem, and it is certain that “none who is banished will remain banished.” We are especially empowered in this regard by the liberation of 12-13 Tammuz, which is a liberation for every Jew, even one who is only “called by the name ‘Israel.’” (To be continued.)

Among the activities and efforts of the baal hageulah in that country were his contacts and relationships with government ministers, which began during his father’s lifetime, in the time of the czar. His approach was to go m’lechatchila ariber (like his grandfather the Rebbe Maharash, with whom he had a special connection to the point that they looked similar, indicating an inner connection) – that is, rather than going to lower ranking officials, he would straight to the relevant minister himself. As we see in the story that has now been published: The baal hageulah’s father sent him to Petersburg to annul a certain government decree, telling him to remain there “to the point of mesirus nefesh.” In Petersburg he befriended the teacher of the Interior Minister, who provided him with a pass allowing him entry to the government building where the Minister’s office was located. Inside the building, he located the minister’s office, found the relevant document and annulled it. This conduct is that of a Nasi of the Jewish people, and although at the time he wasn’t yet the Nasi, nevertheless, since he acted as his father’s shliach, and “A person’s shliach is like himself,” therefore he became literally like the Nasi himself.

The conclusion of shelishi of parashas Balak states, “Balaam said to Balak... ‘…But do I have any power to say a thing? The word that Hashem puts into my mouth, that is what I will speak.’” The earlier verses tell us only that Balaam was unable to say anything he was forbidden to say, and that he was forced to say what Hashem commanded him to say, but this verse adds a new point: that Balaam could not say anything on his own at all. Balaam was the leader of all the nations of the world at that time, and his level of prophecy was comparable to that of Moshe Rabbeinu (because he was the counterpart of Moshe in the realm of unholiness) – yet other than words put into his mouth by Hashem, he was unable to speak at all. This serves as a lesson, encouragement and empowerment for the Jewish people: when we hear the nations of the world saying improper things, it isn’t really their words; even their leaders are unable to say anything on their own. Therefore, there is nothing in the world that can prevent a Jew from fulfilling the mission entrusted to him by the baal hageulah, because nothing in the world can say – and certainly not do – anything that does not align with the will of the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation.

(Continued.) The lesson from this for every individual (because everyone is a “nasi” in his own life) is that even when a person reflects on his spiritual state, and sees how he comes to today’s battle against the yetzer-hara lacking in Torah and mitzvos etc., and asks himself how he will be able to overcome the challenges and fulfill his mission from Hashem – these concerns must remain “in his heart.” It is forbidden for these concerns to affect his actions, and it is forbidden even for it to be visible on his face that is uncertain whether he will succeed in his mission, because that itself can give strength to the other side. As we see in a physical war, soldiers go to the front with a victory march, with a mindset that allows not even the slightest doubt that victory will come, and this itself contributes to the victory. And then, when the doubts remain only “in his heart,” Hashem promises, “Do not fear him,” and removes the fear from the heart as well.

The Rebbe, my father-in-law, writes in his account of his imprisonment, “I came to a firm decision to be bold and strong, without fear, to speak clearly, not to take into account at all the circumstances and environment around me.” This was despite knowing the great danger he faced, and the danger not only to himself but to all the Torah institutions he led in that country etc. It can be said that he derived a lesson for such conduct from the end of parashas Chukas. The verse says, “Hashem said to Moshe, ‘Do not fear him [Og], for I have delivered him, his people, and his land into your hand….” The Gemara asks, why was Moshe was afraid of Og if he had already defeated Sichon etc.? And it answers, “from the answer given to that tzaddik [Moshe Rabbeinu], you know what was in his heart. He said, perhaps the merit of Avraham Avinu will stand for him, as it is written: ‘And the survivor came and told Avram,’ and Rabbi Yochanan said: this refers to Og etc.” But if so, the question is, why did Moshe keep his fear of Og in his heart, and not inform the Jewish people about it? The answer is that Moshe knew that if the Jewish people saw any sign of fear in the Nasi of the Jewish people, even just on his face, it would weaken the Jewish people, and that itself could cause Og to be victorious. Therefore, he kept it “in his heart.” And this is the lesson for a Nasi or leader of the Jewish people: even when facing difficulties, etc., it must not be noticeable in his actions or speech, and not even on his face. Rather, Hashem saw what was in his heart and promised: “Do not fear him.” (To be continued.)

(Continued.) The approach of my father-in-law the Rebbe, like the Baal Shem Tov and his disciples down to the Chabad Rebbes of each generation, was concerned with both the spiritual and material needs of every individual, even one at the ends of the earth, and considered this to be his mission and the purpose for which his soul descended into this world. This is the sign of a “faithful shepherd.” And this is the practical takeaway from 12 Tammuz – the day his soul descended into a body to fulfill its mission in this world – for everyone: Being that “The Nasi is everything,” everyone is obligated – with the power of the Nasi, the “principal” – to concern himself with the welfare of every Jew, and to proactively see whether there is a Jew lacking something materially or spiritually, and once he becomes aware of it, he must help him. And one must view this as his personal mission and life purpose.

On the verse, “The Jewish people sent messengers…,” Rashi states as the plain meaning of the verse: “But elsewhere the sending is attributed to Moshe…these verses need one another: one “locks” and the other “opens” – Moshe is the Jewish people and the Jewish people are Moshe, telling you that the Nasi of the generation is like the entire generation, for the Nasi is everything.” (This also explains why, on the verse, “A star will shoot forth from Yaakov,” we find two interpretations: that it refers to Moshiach, and that it refers to every Jew – because there is a spark of Moshiach in every Jew, and there is a spark of every Jew in Moshiach.) And the same applies to the “extension of Moshe in every generation,” including the Nasi of our generation. The Nasi is like a king, who is the very existence of his subjects (which is why “one who gestures in the presence of the king” loses his existence). Accordingly, it is understood that a lesson from 12 Tammuz – the descent of the soul of a Nasi of the Jewish people into this world – is relevant to every member of the generation, and everyone has the ability (as long as he accepts the Nasi’s kingship and is batel to him) to be his shliach to accomplish what the Nasi needs to accomplish – and even to be literally “like him.” (To be continued.)

The Torah states (in Sheini of parashas Chukas) that after Miriam’s passing, “The community had no water…” and the Jewish people came to realize that the well that accompanied them in the desert for forty years was given to them in Miriam’s merit. Water serves two primary functions: (1) To carry a person’s nourishment to all parts of the body. (2) To cleanse and purify a person. In a spiritual sense, Miriam served both of these roles: (1) To carry the Torah (the “nourishment”), given over by Moshe and Aharon, to the people in a such a way that it could be understood and incorporated by every Jew. (2) To cleanse the Jewish people of the undesirable things that had clung to them. The lesson for Jewish women is that their primary role, which is education, is to translate the Torah in such a way that it can be understood by those you who are young in years or young in knowledge. And they should not be discouraged if they do not immediately see the fruits of their efforts; as mentioned, it was only after forty years that the Jewish people recognized in whose merit the well was given to them. (And these days, the fruits will be seen far more quickly.)

We must always ascend in holiness, and all the more so when it comes to something relating to my father-in-law, the Rebbe, a Nasi of the Jewish people. And since “the Nasi is everything” – this must be done in a public fashion. Everything that the Rebbe, my father-in-law, wanted, will be fulfilled (as we saw when the Russian government wanted to prohibit him from taking some of his sefarim and manuscripts with him upon leaving the country, but he declared that he would travel only with all of them, and so it was). The Rebbe gave this building to Agudas Chassidei Chabad – and at a recent meeting of Agudas Chassidei Chabad, it was decided to publicize this – and he wanted it to be a place for davening, including the part of the building that ostensibly served as his private residence (though it is obvious that even a Jew’s private residence is primarily used for Torah study, davening, sefarim and manuscripts etc., while eating, drinking, sleeping, etc., are totally secondary, and certainly the home of a Nasi, who eats, drinks and sleeps as a Nasi). Therefore, it was decided at the meeting to keep using the private residence for davening. May it be Hashem’s will that we merit very soon the true and complete Redemption, when all shuls and study halls in the Diaspora, and certainly the building of 770, will be transferred in their entirety to our Holy Land.

The Torah states at the end of parashas Korach, “You must set aside up from all your gifts…after you lift up its choicest part from it…,” meaning the tribe of Levi has the power to lift up physical objects in the world, and even if an object is already good and lofty (“its choicest part”), they have the ability to lift it up even more. Although the Torah is seemingly talking about the tribe of Levi, this applies to every Jew, as the Rambam writes, “Not only the tribe of Levi, but any one of the inhabitants of the world whose spirit generously motivates him and he understands with his wisdom to set himself aside” from the vanities of the world and “to stand before Hashem and serve Him” can serve Hashem as a Levi, attaching (Levi from the expression yilaveh ishi eilai – “my husband will become attached to me”) himself to Torah and mitzvos. And then Hashem will be “your portion and your inheritance,” so that he will have no struggles and no worries, and Hashem will provide everything as an inheritance given by lot etc.
