    Synopsis

The question arises in the story of the spies: As a true leader of the Jewish people (who was born to lead them, and who by this time had already lived with them and led them in practice), Moshe surely knew the characteristics and thought processes of the Jewish people; how then is it possible that he failed to recognize, G-d forbid, that the spies he chose were unfit for the mission? While Rashi explains that “at that time, they were virtuous,” that raises another question: After they “went up and scouted the land,” what caused them to become frightened, and to dissuade the people from going to Eretz Yisroel? After all, they already knew about the thirty-one kings etc. beforehand? We can understand this based on the Alter Rebbe’s explanation in Likkutei Torah that precisely because they were “virtuous,” they thought it was preferable to remain in the desert, separated and removed from the world, so they could learn Torah and do mitzvos without disturbance, rather than go to Eretz Yisroel where they would have to be involved in worldly matters like plowing fields and running businesses etc. Although they were initially prepared to do it – which is why Moshe chose them – when they came to Eretz Yisroel and actually saw the challenges that lay ahead with their own eyes, they were deterred, because “Hearing is not like seeing.” (To be continued.)

    Synopsis

Although the man was “bread from Heaven” that contained no waste, nevertheless every Jew was able to eat it, even the wicked (though they had to put in effort to prepare [as the Gemara says in connection with the verse in shishi of parashas Behaaloscha, “The people could walk about and gather it. They ground it in a mill…”]). Although eating the man didn’t immediately cause them to do teshuvah, it certainly gave them a push in that direction. The lesson is that even “bread from heaven,” which refers to mitzvos that come easily to a person (as opposed to “bread from the earth,” which refers to mitzvos attained through effort), is given to every Jew, even to the wicked, to make it easier for them to do teshuvah. The same applies to “bread from heaven” in Torah – the inner dimension of Torah (“where there are no difficulties or disputes”): the inner dimension of Torah should not be withheld from any Jew, and certainly one should not tear a Jew away from it, because the very study of the inner dimension of Torah will assist them in doing teshuvah (especially considering that the person being pushed away might actually be on a higher level than the one pushing him away…).

    Synopsis

The Rambam is called by the title Moreh Nevuchim (“Guide for the Perplexed”) because he merited to guide the perplexed to the straight path. We find this at the conclusion of today’s daily Rambam, where he explains that the honor of the mitzvos is “due to the One who commanded them, blessed be He, and saved us from groping in the darkness, and thus granted us a lamp to straighten crooked paths and a light to illumine the upright paths, as it is written, ‘Your words are a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.’” Hashem created the world in a way that it requires fixing, as it says, “‘that G-d created to do – to perfect’” – that is, Hashem intended that there be “crooked paths,” and that every individual should strive through his service to “straighten crooked paths” by fulfilling the mitzvos, “a lamp is a mitzvah and the Torah is light.” The reason it says, “a lamp to my feet” (rather than the head), and “a light for my paths” (rather than “ways,” which connotes a broad path) is because a Jew’s mission to make a dwelling place for Hashem in the lower realms applies not only to matters of global importance, but to every detail of creation. And this is accomplished through the “Your words,” meaning through Hashem’s speech, which signifies revelation etc.

    Synopsis

In addition to the miracles that occurred before the baal hageulah’s imprisonment, and of course the miracle of the liberation itself, an open miracle took place during the arrest itself, that people overlook. Generally, when the authorities want to arrest a suspect, the first thing they do is prevent him from talking to anyone else without supervision etc., but in this case, the officers who came to arrest him (which included a Jew, who, as a person with free will, is even harder to deal with) asked him to go to another room to talk to his mother privately (to calm her). This is something that defied nature completely. The lesson is that anyone who reflects on their life will see that they are surrounded by miracles, and therefore, when a Jew makes a calculation and concludes that he shouldn’t be involved in spreading Torah and Yiddishkeit because he has no chance of success according to nature, the response is that none of these calculations have any place for a Jew, whose behavior is not bound by nature at all. And certainly one should not make such calculations at someone else’s expense. Everyone can have an impact on others, and we see that in the course of time, all who have had done so have succeeded.

    Synopsis

    (1) Regarding the men (in shelishi of parashas Behaalosecha) who were unable to bring the korban Pesach because of their impurity (whether due to carrying the Yosef’s coffin or handling the bodies of Nadav and Avihu), the Gemara states that “their seventh day fell on Erev Pesach,” which is the day they approached Moshe with their question, “Why should we be excluded”. Seemingly, if they already knew beforehand that they were impure, why did they wait until the last moment, the 14th of Nissan, to approach Moshe with their question? Moreover, why didn’t they ask Moshe before becoming impure whether it would conflict with bringing the Pesach in its appointed time? The answer is that since they were involved with an act of true kindness, they had no doubt that they were obligated to complete the task at hand, and they were certain that a solution would be found to their question. Therefore, they saw no need to inquire until it came time to actually bring the korban. From this we learn a wondrous lesson: one should never delay an act of Ahavas Yisroel (helping a poor person physically, or helping someone who is spiritually poor) – and especially in the time of the footsteps of Moshiach etc. (2) Every effort should be made to ensure that Jewish children are enrolled in Jewish summer camps where they will be infused with fear of Heaven, Ahavas Yisrael, diligent Torah study, and the meticulous observance of mitzvos.

    Synopsis

Although you can’t light the Menorah until after the Menorah is made, parashas Beha’aloscha first states, “When you kindle the lamps” and then “This was how the Menorah was made.” The explanation is that by kindling the lamps, Aharon caused the “Menorah to be made” anew, on a higher level than it was previously. This is similar to giving of the Torah where, even after the service of the 49 days of counting the Omer, when the time arrives one becomes “like a newborn child” and receives the Torah anew. The lesson is that every Jew has the power, by kindling his own “lamps,” to not only add to what he accomplished before, but to fashion an entirely new being. This can be explained even to young children – so long as one speaks from the heart, because as we see clearly, only words spoken from the heart enter the heart and have their effect.

    Synopsis

12 Sivan is the final day of the days of tashlumin for the holiday of Shavuos. We know that everything that was done in the Beis Hamikdash, such as the pilgrimage and the korbanos etc., continue and must be observed spiritually in the sanctuary within every Jew; thus, there is the opportunity for Tashlumin even now up to and including the 12th of Sivan – and this certainly applies to giving of the Torah aspect of Shavuos, which doesn’t depend on the Beis Hamikdash. With regard to the giving of the Torah: (1) One must resolve, and actually begin, to receive and study the Torah with vitality and “reverence, awe, trembling, and quaking,” particularly in the manner of “reaching conclusions from the discussion in accordance with halacha” (similar to how the Aseres Hadibros contained clear rulings). (2) Before the Aseres Hadibros (which in the plain sense is part of the revealed dimension of Torah), “Hashem descended upon Mount Sinai” – a revelation of G-dliness and the Divine Chariot above. This teaches us that one must also study the Maaseh Merkavah – the inner dimension of the Torah – as explained by the teachings of Chabad Chassidus.

    Synopsis

The Alter Rebbe explains that the reason the Torah repeats the details of the korbanos of each of the nesi’im – even though they were identical in number and kind – is because each nasi’s offering matched the unique spiritual service of his tribe. Therefore, on a deeper level, the offerings weren’t identical. Although one might ask, if this is the case, why they brought the same kinds of offerings, this poses no question: it is similar to the splitting of the sea, where the outstretching of one hand, and the blowing of one “mighty east wind,” caused the sea to split into twelve paths for the twelve tribes. Similarly, regarding the arrival of the Jewish people at Mount Sinai it says, “And Israel encamped there” in the singular form, despite the fact that there were six hundred thousand (not including women and children, etc.). The lesson is that it is specifically when every individual fulfills the unique task assigned to him as an individual that they form the one nation that receives the one Torah from the One G-d.

    Synopsis

Chamishi of Parashas Nasso discusses “the day on which Moshe finished erecting the Mishkan,” with the word “finished” (kalos) written as kalas, alluding to a bride, as Rashi states, “for on the day the Mishkan was erected, the Jewish people were like a bride entering the bridal canopy” with the “Groom,” Hashem. This marked the completion drawing G-dliness into the world (“And I will dwell within them”). We similarly find the expression “bride” in connection with the giving of the Torah, which marked the beginning of G-dliness coming down into the world: The verse states, “When He finished (kechaloso) speaking with Moshe, He gave him…”; as Rashi explains, “It is written as kekalaso, without a vov, for the Torah was given to him as a gift, like a bride to the bridegroom.” The giving of the Torah marked the kiddushin (betrothal) of Hashem and the Jewish people, in preparation for the coming nisuin (marriage), and the kiddushin already encompassed the nisuin, because the kiddushin renders the bride “forbidden to everyone else like hekdesh” etc., which is why the plain meaning in both cases (kalos and kechaloso) is completion and conclusion. Additionally, they appear in parashas Ki Sisa and parashas Naso respectively, both of which connote “raising up.” The lesson is that Torah study, and one’s involvement in “gold, silver, and copper” in order to make a dwelling place for Hashem in this world, must be done with one’s “head held high,” and the power to do so comes from “I am Hashem your G-d”: as Hashem’s bride, one receives the “twenty-four adornments of a bride” etc.

    Synopsis

The special shlichus for this time of year, beginning from the time of the Giving of our Torah, is for every Jew to accept upon himself the mission of establishing shiurim in Torah (especially community shiurim). This applies to men, women, and even children, and while everyone should do it in a manner appropriate to their own level, it should be done in such a way that today’s shiur is greater than yesterday’s, and similarly advancing from the shiur at the beginning of the day to the shiur in the middle of the day and at the end of the day. By advancing “from strength to strength” in all this, one will merit to “Go from strength to strength, to appear to Hashem in Tzion,” to the Kodesh Hakodoshim which contains the Aron with the first and second Luchos. Since we are within the days of tashlumin for Shavuos, even the first Luchos are in a state of completeness, and instead of breaking (shevirah), there will be “grain (shever) in Egypt” – the true sustenance that connects the body to the soul, the created being to the true Being, with the true and complete Redemption etc.
