Today’s Rambam states, “A man should not marry a woman if he intends to divorce her.” The question is, we know that the giving of the Torah was the “marriage” of Hashem and the Jewish people, yet the verse says explicitly that “this people will rise up and stray…and I will abandon them…” which seemingly indicates that at the time of the marriage, Hashem intended to divorce the Jewish people, chas v’shalom? Rather, we must say that there was never a divorce (but only the outward appearance of one), as the verse states, “Where is your mother’s bill of divorce....” For this reason, the cry of “Ad mosai?” becomes even stronger – because Hashem is obligated to provide the Jewish people with “food, clothing, and intimacy,” and these must be given according to the needs and understanding of the wife. There is no choice but to raise a true hue and cry that we want Moshiach literally right now. [After the chassidim sang the niggun “We Want Moshiach Now” for an hour and a half straight, the Rebbe said:] If there’s a Vaad Hamesader here, they should appoint someone to announce, “This concludes the hakafah…”

The commentaries explain that the Jewish people counted the days of the Omer between the Exodus from Egypt and the Giving of the Torah because they yearned to receive the Torah; similarly, every year during this time, one should awaken a yearning to receive the Torah anew. Just as there were certain conditions and preparations when the Torah was given the first time, preparations must similarly be made to receive the Torah anew every year – including that “Our children will be our guarantors” that the Jewish people will live with the Torah – which was the only guarantee Hashem accepted. It the merit of our commitment to educate our children from a young age to follow the path of Torah and its mitzvos, we receive the Torah anew in every generation.

A Jewish home must be built in the manner described at the beginning of parashas Behar, “When you enter the land,” it must immediately “rest a Shabbos for Hashem.” Meaning the first thought upon which one bases his entire conduct must be to take something earthly, physical, and material, and prepare it for the state and condition of “resting” – losing its earthliness, so that it becomes a “Shabbos for Hashem,” meaning G-dliness is perceived within it. This is achieved through the awakening from below, “For six years you shall sow your field etc.,” which is followed by the reward corresponding to the effort, and then also the reward and awakening from above that is even higher than that. The same applies to the order of Torah study: first one studies the plain meaning of Torah – the external dimension, followed by the inner dimension of Torah, followed by studying Torah the way it is connected to Hashem, and ultimately studying Torah in such a way that “the Shechinah speaks from inside his throat.” And similarly with Ahavas Yisroel: loving a Jew because of his revealed qualities, then because of the inner dimension of his soul, and ultimately because of his very essence (which is also revealed within every Jew, as it says in Tanya, that even the most unworthy Jew will withstand every test when he senses that sinning would sever him chas v’shalom from G-dliness).

One of the reasons for the celebration of Lag B’Omer is that it is the day of Rashbi’s passing, “his day of celebration,” to the extent that he requested that everyone rejoice on that day. The reason he celebrated Lag B’Omer is because he felt he had reached the ultimate perfection in his connection and oneness with Hashem on that day, as he says in the Zohar, “one with Him, aflame with Him, attached to Him” – even though his service was already complete before that. The lesson for everyone who participate in his celebration, especially Jewish children, is that from the moment a child enters the world, we strive to connect and unite him with Hashem by surrounding him with names of Hashem etc., and as he grows physically, he also grows in his connection and oneness with Hashem, by learning Torah and performing mitzvos, by saying Modeh Ani the moment he wakes up, expressing the feeling that Hashem has returned his soul to him, and in this way he connects to Hashem in everything he does throughout the entire day. But one must not suffice with the connection and unity that he achieved the day before – rather, one must always increase it.

A lesson from Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai for whom “his Torah was his occupation”: Just like the primary vitality of a craftsman lies in his occupation, and that’s what he thinks about all the time, even when he is doing other things – so it is with every Jew: there are certain times during the day when a Jew eats and sleeps etc., but nevertheless, a Jew’s “occupation” and main focus of his being is Torah. This must be evident in everything he does throughout the day, even when he isn’t learning Torah. For children, it is easier for “Torah to be their occupation” literally, because their parents provide them with all they need, so they don’t have to worry about earning a livelihood etc. –and when the parents see that their children are so immersed in Torah learning and devote every free moment to it, the parents are also influenced to strive to devote more time to Torah study. In this way, the children grow up spiritually healthy, and consequently, physically healthy as well – because even when they eat and drink, they do so only to the extent that benefits their “occupation” – which is Torah.

On the verse (in revi’i of parashas Emor) “When you reap the harvest of your land, you must not fully reap the corner of your field during your harvesting…” Rashi states: “Rabbi Avdimi the son of Rabbi Yosef said: Why did Scripture see fit to place this in the middle of the festivals…To teach you that whoever who gives leket, shik’cha and pe’ah properly is considered as if he built the Beis Hamikdash and offered up his sacrifices in it.” Rashi’s wording differs from the common version of the source text in Toras Kohanim, which states, “as if the Beis Hamikdash were standing and he were offering up sacrifices in it.” The reason Rashi uses the less common version is because while a person who gives tzedakah in general is considered as though he is “giving his soul’s life to Hashem,” since “with this money he could have purchased his soul’s life” (as the Alter Rebbe says in Iggeres HaKodesh), nevertheless, there is a unique quality to the tzedakah one gives from money he earned from the toil of his own hands. This is the special quality of pe’ah and leket etc., where a person necessarily has labored for it by plowing and sowing etc. – yet he gives it to the poor even before he has a chance to benefit from the produce himself. Therefore, while ordinary tzedakah is considered (only) like offering up sacrifices, giving pe’ah etc. is also considered “as if he built the Beis Hamikdash.”

A simple directive from the concept of Kiddush Hashem and chilul Hashem [as the verse states in shelishi of parashas Emor, “You must not desecrate My holy Name, that I may be sanctified among the Jewish people etc.”] : A Jewish child must know that acting according to Hashem’s will is not merely a personal matter, but something that causes a Kiddush Hashem, and when one behaves in an improper manner chas v’shalom, it causes a chillul Hashem. Therefore, a Jew must be especially careful to make sure his behavior is fitting for a Jew. On a related note, regarding the Pesach practice of wishing each other a “Kosher and joyous holiday,” my father, who’s birthday is today, explains that the word “kosher” is an acronym for “like one who finds great spoil” (כמוצא שלל רב), meaning: When a Jewish child is careful to eat kosher food and ensures that his behavior is kosher – and thus doesn’t cause a chilul Hashem – he must know that it is “like finding great spoil.”

Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai holds that the community does not bring a Pesach Sheini offering. Seemingly, how is it possible that Rashbi, who said, “I am able to exempt the entire world from judgment” (and by saying it, he caused it to come down and be revealed in this physical world) would hold that the entire community would be “excluded” from bringing the Korban Pesach? The explanation is that, to the contrary, Rashbi held that the community doesn’t bring the Pesach Sheini because it doesn’t need to: When the community cries out “Why should we be excluded?” and they yearn to bring the korban etc. – that itself already has the effect of the Korban Pesach. (Similar to how we don’t say Tachanun on meritorious days because the merit of the day itself causes that Tachanun isn’t needed.) This is especially true considering the fact that Rashbi was the Nasi of his generation, who saw his own qualities in the people of his generation: because he was able to accomplish his Divine service in a spiritual fashion, he held that the community didn’t need to physically bring the Pesach Sheini. (Similar to the story of the Mitteler Rebbe pausing Yechidus until he was able to identify within himself – in a most subtle form – the issue for which someone needed a tikkun).

Pesach Sheini teaches us that it’s never too late: even if someone is “impure” or “distant,” and even if it was “lachem,” meaning it was by their choice – nevertheless they can still correct the situation. An additional novelty in Pesach Sheini is that the mitzvah was introduced by those very individuals who required correction, by protesting, “Why should we be excluded?” This led to the addition of a new parashah in the Torah, not only for themselves but for the entire Jewish people, and one from which we can derive a lesson for the entire year. This serves as wondrous lesson of the tremendous power of every single Jew: even a few individuals, whoever they may be – even if they were impure or distant etc. – have the power to add something to Torah and mitzvos for the entire Jewish people.

Helping another Jew physically does not exempt one from the obligation to help him spiritually – by influencing him to put on tefillin and keep Shabbos, kashrus, family purity etc. On the contrary – helping another Jew spiritually is even more important, because that is the essence of a Jew’s life. The obligation to rebuke one’s fellow (as it says in parashas Kedoshim) doesn’t apply only to Rabbonim etc., but to every Jew. Certainly someone who employs another Jew in his business, thus assisting him with his material livelihood, is especially obligated to utilize the influence he has over him to help him in a pleasant manner draw closer to Yiddishkeit etc., and “action is the main thing.” One must exert himself in this effort “even up to one hundred times,” and in the end, he will succeed.
