    Synopsis

A lesson regarding the mitzvah to “Love your fellow like yourself” (in sheini of parashas Kedoshim): After the histalkus of the Alter Rebbe, the Tzemach Tzedek had a number of questions he wanted to ask the Alter Rebbe, but he didn’t merit for the Alter Rebbe to appear to him until one day a Jew approached him before davening and asked for a loan so he could purchase a calf from which to earn his livelihood (it was market day). The Tzemach Tzedek hurried back home – before davening – and leant him the money. When he returned to shul, the Alter Rebbe appeared to him with a radiant face and resolved his questions. Now, the Tzemach Tzedek undoubtedly kept the practice of “accepting upon myself the positive mitzvah to love your fellow like yourself” and “giving a coin to a pauper” before davening every day. Moreover, there was an argument to be made that it’s enough to “love your fellow like yourself” – and since he wouldn’t have dealt with his own livelihood until after davening, he didn’t have to take care of someone else’s livelihood until after davening either. Nevertheless, it was specifically this alacrity in helping another Jew even more than “like yourself” that caused the Alter Rebbe to appear to him etc.

    Synopsis

    (1) The beginning of parashas Kedoshim states, “You must be holy, for I, Hashem, your G-d, am holy”: every Jew must conduct themselves in a holy manner, and when someone comes to confuse him saying, how can you possibly stand up against the atmosphere mundaneness of the entire world around you, the response from the Torah is: “for I am holy” – Hashem gives every individual all the necessary strength to fulfill their role and mission in the world in a holy manner, and in such a way that, “Behold, Hashem stands over him” – Hashem Himself is with every Jew etc. (2) One of the lessons from the mitzvah of Sefira HaOmer lies in the fact that the days are counted individually, with each day being its own mitzvah with its own bracha, which expresses the preciousness of time. One must recognize that every person can choose whether to link the day to the One “Who sanctified us with His commandments” or not. May it be Hashem’s will that you recognize the value of every day and the fact that every day is a world unto itself (a distinct mitzvah with its own bracha) and to utilize it fully (and not push it off until tomorrow). Reflecting on this in an honest fashion will lead a person to improve or (if necessary) change his conduct in his service of Hashem.

    Synopsis

The name of parashas Acharei teaches that even someone who has attained complete perfection – like Nadav and Avihu, who had “drawn near to Hashem,” or the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur in the Kodesh HaKodoshim (which is described at the beginning of the parashah) – must not be satisfied with that. Rather, he must contemplate what he mut do “after” that. And this isn’t just a hiddur mitzvah – it is necessary so that even he take to heart the warning that comes later in the parashah, “You shall not imitate the practices of the land of Egypt...and the practices of the land of Canaan etc.” As we also see from the fact that this passage is the Torah reading on Yom Kippur (Minchah and) Ne’ilah. This is the general lesson: Regardless of one’s success in his divine service until now, he can and must continue to serve “after” that in an even higher manner and an infinite manner, by connecting to Hashem Who is infinite.

    Synopsis

The verse states (at the end of chamishi of parashas Acharei), “You shall observe My statutes…which a man shall do and live by them.” The Maggid explains this with the analogy of tzitzis: first the tzizis are an inanimate object, but when a Jew uses them for a mitzvah, the tzizis “lives by them” – the Jew draws life into them and turns them into “living tzitzis,” like the story of the Baal Shem Tov, whose tzitzis were seen moving like a living being – they literally and physically became alive. The explanation of this teaching in Chassidus is as follows: the vitality drawn down by the physical man is Divine life that transcends seder hishtalshelus – and it also “makes” the Supernal Man, so to speak (as the verse says, “and you shall do them” – spelled ועשיתם אַתם – “and you shall make”) etc.

    Synopsis

On the verse [in rishon of parashas Acharei], “he shall atone for himself and for his household,” our Sages said: “‘His household’ – this refers to his wife.” Why does the verse not say explicitly “and for his wife”? This can be understood based on the statement of Rabbi Yosi, “I never called my wife ‘my wife,’ nor my ox ‘my ox’; rather, [I called] my wife ‘my house’ (because she is the mainstay of the home), and my ox ‘my field’ (because it is the primary tool for the field).” Seemingly, while it’s true that the wife is the mainstay of the home, why was Rabbi Yosi so careful to “never call my wife ‘my wife’”? And why is this considered such a special quality? The explanation is that Rabbi Yosi saw in everything only its ultimate purpose. Therefore, while it’s true that a wife also has value in and of herself (which is why there’s a mitzvah to “gladden one’s wife” even before there are children, etc.), nonetheless, the ultimate purpose of marriage is to fulfill the mitzvah to be fruitful and multiply), and Rabbi Yosi immediately saw in his wife no other reality but this purpose. Therefore, he was never able to call her “my wife,” only “my house.” Moreover, even when it came to animal life, “my ox,” Rabbi Yosi immediately perceived only its ultimate purpose – “my field.” This is why Rabbi Yosi’s conduct is considered such a hiddur, and also why the ultimate perfection of the Kohen Gadol is when “he atones for his household,” meaning when he attains such a level that to him, “his wife” is nothing but “his house.”

    Synopsis

There’s a discussion as to whether the prohibition of a niddah to her husband results from the impurity of niddah, or if it’s an independent prohibition, and the conclusion is that it’s a matter of prohibition. Two proofs fir this are as follows: (1) Regarding niddah, we rule leniently in a case of doubt, even though we rule stringently in a case of doubtful impurity in a private domain. (2) The rule that “A single witness is believed for prohibitions” is derived from the verse [at the end of the shishi of parashas Metzora] regarding niddah, “…she must count for herself” – and we don’t derive rules concerning prohibitions from laws of impurity. The advantage of this conclusion is that it’s easier to (feel regret and) do teshuvah for a prohibition that a person violated, than for a matter of impurity (which is a decree that transcends reason etc.); since Hashem is full of mercy, He rules that this is a matter of prohibition. In terms of Divine service: Hashem and the Jewish people are compared to a husband and wife, and sin causes the Jewish people to become distanced from Hashem – a state of “niddah.” But the whole concept of sin and distance is a matter of “prohibition”: (1) Even though one is in a “private domain” – the domain of the Sole One of the world – nevertheless, with regards to “rendering her forbidden to her husband,” a case of doubt is decided leniently. (2) When two witnesses testify, it must be done in a Beis Din etc., whereas a Beis Din isn’t required for one witness. Meaning, with regards to permitting the Jewish people to its “Husband,” Hashem doesn’t require a Beis Din (from below or above) – rather, He relies on the “single witness” – the G‑dly soul within every Jew, which testifies that she is “fit for her Husband” – and therefore, Hashem provides the Jewish people with everything the Husband is obligated to provide etc.

    Synopsis

The wicks used to light up the Beis Hashoevah were made specifically "From the worn trousers of the Kohanim and their belts." The explanation according to Chassidus can be understood from the importance of shemiras habris, which the coming of Moshiach depends on etc. The function of the belt is "so that one's heart does not see his nakedness," and through them, even the trousers remained holy garments. This is the lesson: the belt and (through it) the trousers must remain holy, to the extent that even the trousers can be used to make wicks for illuminating the Beis Hamikdash. And this is the answer to those who complain that they're not succeeding in their learning and davening – when the trousers and the belt aren't as they should be, it's no wonder the light doesn't ignite. The seriousness of this prohibition is mentioned only briefly in Chassidus, because the approach of Chassidus is to focus on light, but one must know the seriousness of the matter and fix it by doing teshuvah. Among the suggestions for doing this are observing Tevilas Ezra, being careful with one's speech, and avoiding melancholy (by keeping one's past sins "across from me" etc.).

    Synopsis

The Rebbe Maharash taught the approach of lechatchila ariber (“going above in the first place”) as the famous saying goes: “The world says that if you can’t go under, you go over – and I say one should go above in the first place.” (This explains why most of the Rebbe Maharash’s hemshechim began on Pesach, “the Time of our Freedom.”) And he prefaced it with saying what the world says, and then adding that nevertheless, “I say” that one should go m’lechatchila ariber – in order to bring about the concept of lechatchila ariber within the world itself. This will be complete with the true and complete Redemption, but we must have a taste of it already now, by studying Torah, keeping mitzvos, and giving tzedakah in a manner of m’lechatchila ariber – beyond all measure and limitation. One shouldn’t wait to give tzedakah until the collector comes and pressures him; rather, lechatchila ariber – he should seek out the collector himself and offer to give the tzedakah. Similarly, when it comes to impacting others, one must seize the first possible moment to bring them the idea of lechatchila ariber. The very decision to adopt the approach of lechatchila ariber must be done in the spirit of lechatchila ariber – “We will do and we will hear” – not waiting until one understands it intellectually, but first doing it, and thinking about it afterwards.

    Synopsis

    (1) The verse, “If a woman conceives and gives birth to a male” (at the beginning of parashas Tazria) alludes to the future Redemption, which will come through an awakening from below (from the recipient) resulting in “giving birth to a male,” meaning a Redemption after which there will be no more exile. Working on one’s personal redemption, and that of one’s family and those around him, will hasten the global Redemption speedily in our days. (2) The general directive from the Rebbe Maharash (whose birthday it is) is that one should conduct himself in the manner of m’lechatchila ariber – meaning that from the very beginning of one’s service, his approach should be elevated and exalted, even above the highest things. The idea of m’lechatchila ariber also relates to “nesius” – and certainly to the Nasi of the teachings of Chassidus (which teach a person to go beyond the letter of the law – also an expression of m’lechatchila ariber). This is also emphasized by the Rebbe Maharash’s birth on 2 Iyar: at the very moment of his birth, it was already Tiferes Sheb’Tiferes.

    Synopsis

The fact that some people are still cold toward the idea of Mivtzaim is similar to the fact that although all Jews are “believers, the children of believers,” nevertheless there are some who in practice behave as if they don’t know that “there is a Master to this palace” and that “there is nothing one besides Him” literally. Similarly, in this case: They learn in the Gemara that “‘All the peoples of the earth will see that the name of Hashem is called over you, and they will fear you’… This refers to the head-tefillin,” but in practice when you ask them what a goy will do when he sees a Jew walking down the street wearing tefillin on his head, they respond that the goy will laugh. It is similar to the “children taken captive” who think that the Jewish people's connection to Eretz Yisrael is based on the agreement of some goyim several decades ago that Eretz Yisrael should be a home for the Jewish nation, and therefore they ask why it’s necessary to fight for Eretz Yisrael, why Arabs are expelled, etc., and they suggest instead that the Jewish people should just move abroad. Such a question doesn’t arise among those who are educated according to the Torah and are permeated with the truth, that Hashem gave Eretz Yisrael to the Jewish people forever. Similarly, one must know that when the Torah says that the head-tefillin cause “the peoples of the earth to fear you,” and that affixing a mezuzah to a Jewish home causes Hashem Himself to guard the home and everything in it etc. – that is the reality.
