The closer we get to Shavuos, the more we must increase our preparations for receiving the Torah, and especially on the day before Shavuos. Nevertheless, there are many people involved in all sorts of good and lofty things, but they forget to mention the need simply to prepare for receiving the Torah on the Yom Tov of Shavuos, the Time of the Giving of the Torah. And the way to preparate for it is simple: putting “We will do” before “We will hear” (which the Jewish people said on 5 Sivan). And one shouldn’t just say the words; rather one should take a few minutes during the day to reflect on it – to reflect honestly on “We will do,” on “We will listen,” and on putting “We will do before “We will hear” – and in such a way that these few minutes extend to the rest of the day. In this way, one will be ready to receive the Torah with joy and inner meaning.

(1) The connection between parashas Bamidbar and Shavuos is that the Torah was given in a desert. Two reasons for this are given in Midrashim: (a) From the perspective of the cheftza (the “object”) of the Torah, it was to show that like the desert, the Torah is ownerless (in the positive sense), so that “all will be equal in it,” and anyone who wishes has the ability (and therefore the obligation) to take it and study it etc. (b) From the perspective of the gavra (the “person” who studies Torah), it was to teach a person to “make himself like a desert, upon which everyone tramples,” because the preparation for receiving the Torah is bitul, “let my soul be like dust to all” – it is specifically in this way that one’s “heart is opened to Your Torah.” (2) Chamishi of parashas Bamidbar discusses the redemption of the firstborn males through the Levi’im. Although the service of kehunah was initially intended specifically for the firstborns, the Levi’im redeemed them and entered into the service in their place, and their service was complete. The lesson is that even a Jew who by nature is inclined toward the service of being involved in worldly matters can attain the level of the service of kehunah and serve Hashem like the tribe of Levi, and fulfill this service completely etc.

The advantage of the days of preparation for Matan Torah over the days of Matan Torah itself can be understood based on the explanation in Chassidus of the greatness of the Minchah prayer (as the Gemara says, “Be careful with the Mincha prayer, for even Eliyahu was answered only at the Mincha prayer”): the unique quality of Minchah is that one interrupts in middle of his worldly affairs to daven to Hashem. Similarly, the Torah was given on Shabbos, when “all your work is done,” and a voice emerged from the entire world proclaiming that, “I am Hashem your G-d,” etc.; therefore, it is no wonder that the Jewish people stood with “reverence, awe, trembling and quaking.” What is more remarkable is the fact that in the days beforehand, which were weekdays, and they were engaged in their work, nevertheless when they heard that it was time to prepare for Matan Torah, they tore themselves away from their work and prepared for Matan Torah. The lesson is that during these days leading up to Matan Torah, when one disconnects from his daily work (which preceded this farbrengen, and to which he will return tomorrow after the farbrengen), and comes here to be pushed into listening to an explanation on the concept of Na‘aseh V’nishma and to hear how one must prepare for Matan Torah – that is a remarkable novelty. And from this we can understood the preciousness of every move one makes during these hours and moments that is utilized to prepare for Matan Torah.

(a) On Rosh Chodesh Sivan, one should begin preparing to receiving the Torah by “sanctifying yourselves” in thought, speech, and action, just like the Jewish people did on Rosh Chodesh Sivan the first time (the day that “they came to the Sinai desert”). (b) Since the preparations for receiving the Torah began on Rosh Chodesh Sivan, it is understood that there is a connection between Rosh Chodesh and Torah: After the moon becomes smaller and smaller and then disappears completely, Rosh Chodesh marks the birth of the new moon, and from then on the moon shines more and more with each passing day (unlike the sun, which shines constantly without change). Similarly, one’s study of Torah, which is a Torah of Life, requires growth. In a plant’s life, there are times when you can see it growing and producing fruit, and times when it appears frozen and doesn’t grow or produce fruit, but during that time it receives new strength to produce more fruit. The Same is true of Torah: Although Hashem sometimes gives a person difficulties in Torah study, it is only so that the person will exert himself to overcome them, and thereby reach a deeper understanding. And precisely because he exerted himself, he will take true pleasure in it.

[Continued.] By citing “the incident of Korach,” where the punishment was by the hand of Heaven, Rashi gives proof to his explanation in the earlier verse, “any layperson who approaches will be put to death” that “put to death” means “by the hand of heaven,” unlike most instances of the word יומת (as opposed to ימות) which mean death by the court. (Although Rashi already explained in Mishpatim on the verse, “its owner, too, shall be put to death (יומת)” that it means by the hand of heaven, nevertheless, there he asks explicitly, “Perhaps it means by the hand of man?” and brings a proof that it means by the hand of Heaven.) The lesson from all this is that just as in the incident of Korach, even the “wrath” (let alone the punishment of death) was not unleashed until they actually offered the ketores, and moreover, even after Korach gathered the tribe of Levi and incited them against Moshe, they still found favor in Hashem’s eyes, and Moshe sought to bring them to do teshuvah etc., similarly, if a Jew is lacking in his service of “guarding around the Mishkan” (distancing himself from sin) and the like, as long as he doesn’t actually sin, he finds favor in “the eyes of G-d” (the attribute of judgment), and “The Holy One, blessed be He, assists him,” and it is certain that “he who is banished will not remain banished.”

On the verse [in sheini of parashas Bamidbar] “And the Levi’im must encamp around the Mishkan of Testimony, so that there will be no wrath against the community of the Jewish people,” Rashi explains: “If you do as I have commanded, there will be no wrath; but if not, and laypersons venture into this service of theirs, there will be wrath, as we find in the incident of Korach, ‘for wrath has gone forth….’” A number of questions arise: (1) What is difficult here in the plain meaning of the verse? (2) We know that “From a negative statement you can infer a positive statement” – so why is it necessary to spell out that “but if not, and laypersons venture into their service of theirs…”? (3) Why does Rashi need to bring a proof from the “incident of Korach”? The explanation is as follows: A previous verse states, “any layperson who approaches will be put to death”; therefore, the question is why this verse adds this idea of “wrath”? A possible explanation would be that the earlier verse, which mentions the death penalty, applies when a layperson actually enters, whereas this verse teaches that if the Levi’im failed to guard the Mishkan as required (creating the possibility for layperson to enter), but no layperson actually entered, then (there would be no death penalty but) there would be “wrath.” But Rashi negates this explanation by saying, “but if not, and laypersons venture into this service of theirs” – only then will there be “wrath” (in addition to the death penalty mentioned in the earlier verse). Rashi proves this from the incident of Korach, where it says, “for wrath has gone forth,” indicating that (1) there was no wrath until the non-Kohanim actually offered the ketores (even though the Levi’im had already ceased guarding the Mishkan earlier, when they joined with Korach); and (2) in addition to the punishment of death upon the 250 men, there was also a general “wrath” etc. [To be continued.]

Lately we’ve been discussing the importance of the “family” framework (as it says in parashas Bamidbar, “by their families, by their paternal houses”) – the feeling of connection and unity between parents and children. It could be said that the weakening of the family structure, like all troubles, stems from chasing after the approach of the gentiles, where everything is based on materialism and earning a livelihood. Therefore, in previous generations, when a person worked at home and the family assisted him in earning a livelihood, the family bond was maintained naturally, in contrast to our generation, where people work in factories etc. Some have tried the approach of taking children from their parents and handing them over to be educated by “professionals” in public institutions, but we see the terrible troubles that resulted, because they forgot that a person has a soul, and needs love and attention from their parents, and a connection with them. Similarly: one must know that regardless of the conditions of the place and time – the Torah, which “will not be changed,” establishes that the family unit must be sustained and strengthened.

This farbrengen is in connection with Shabbos Mevorchim of the month of Sivan, which is associated with Matan Torah, especially this year, when it also fell on Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan, the day on which “they came to the Sinai desert” (“Sinai” connoting the bitul required for Torah study, etc.) and “camped facing the mountain” – they were already in a state in which they were fit to receive the Torah. Accordingly, it is understood that the primary outcome of this farbrengen must be to increase in the preparation for the giving of the Torah and receiving the Torah, through renewed vitality in Torah study. Proper Torah study involves “companionship with one’s colleagues” and “debating with one’s students” (which are among the forty-eight ways through which “the Torah is acquired” listed in the chapter of Pirkei Avos for this Shabbos). Therefore, one should strive to study Torah together with other Jews, and then, when the Torah is studied properly, it leads to action – keeping the mitzvos meticulously.

The end of Masechta Sotah (which is studied during Sefiras Ha’Omer as a preparation for the giving of the Torah) discusses events that seem not to be positive ones, similar to the passages in Bechukosai (which we read in preparation for the giving of the Torah) and Ki Savo, where, “although these words of rebuke appear to be curses, in truth they are nothing but blessings,” as has already been revealed and printed in the inner teachings of the Torah [Likkutei Torah on parashas Bechukosai]. There’s also a story in this vein recounted in Nigleh [Moed Katan 9b, regarding Rashbi and his son]. This is also why service the days of Sefirah are associated with the Omer offering, which is brought from barley – like the offering of the Sotah, because the ultimate goal is that “she will be exempted and bear children” – blessed with living, enduring children. As the verse states, “If you follow My statutes…I will give your rains in their time…” and as the Baal Shem Tov explained, “your rains” (gishmeichem) includes physical blessings. One of the events described at the end of Masechta Sotah (which obviously is meant plainly in a positive sense) is that “In the times of the approach of Moshiach, impudence will increase”: after “all the end-times have passed,” a Jew can and must demand the coming of Moshiach, even in a manner of “impudence,” in accordance with the clear halachic ruling of the Torah.

The beginning of Bechukosai states, “If you advance in My decrees etc.” A person might ask: how can I be expected to advance in Torah and mitzvos “from strength to strength,” when I’m in exile, and “we have not seen our signs” etc.? The answer lies in the verse’s expression, “If you advance in My decrees” (Bechukosai), from the term engraving (chakikah): The unique quality of engraved letters is that the letters become part of the material in which they are engraved. Similarly, when Torah and mitzvos are engraved in a person to the extent that he and the Torah become literally one and the same, and his service comes from the essence of his soul – then the lack of revelation in exile cannot impose any limitations upon him.
