    Synopsis

The command to “Draw out and take for yourselves lambs” was fulfilled “on the tenth of the month,” which fell out that year on Shabbos, leading to the “great miracle” (“striking Egypt with their firstborns”) for which this Shabbos is called Shabbos HaGadol (“the Great Shabbos”). A Jew’s ability to leave all of his personal limitations and constraints (leaving Egypt) comes about through his quality of true “greatness,” which knows no boundaries or limitations; this is why the Exodus began with a “great miracle” – because an ordinary miracle can still be subject to limitation and measure, whereas “Pesach” signifies leaping beyond all restrictions – a “great miracle.” And it came about through the “great miracle” and “leap” in the service of the Jewish people: although spiritually they were “naked and bare,” they endangered themselves with mesiras-nefesh, by taking the lamb (the deity of Egypt), on the tenth of the month, to use it for the Korban Pesach, and they did so publicly. Similarly, every Jew must “withdraw” from anything associated with idolatry, and in this way, we will merit the Redemption, already at the beginning of the month of Nissan this very year.

    Synopsis

Among the activities of the Tzemach Tzedek: In his days, Chassidim and those who had previously opposed Chassidus became united. He devoted himself with mesiras-nefesh to Jewish education, and he was the leading force at the rabbinical conferences held in Petersburg on the issue, where he stood firmly etc. He was involved with the Jewish soldiers forced into military service, to the extent that when he was in Petersburg they asked him to come and speak to them; the government agreed, and he delivered the maamar Shema Yisrael Havayah Elokeinu Havayah Echod, which was later printed and continues to be studied to this day etc. The lesson is that one must know that today, opposition to Chassidus has ceased, and people want to hear etc.

    Synopsis

“On the eleventh day [of the month of Nissan], the nasi [who brought his offering was] of the tribe of Asher.” The lesson is as follows (and it pertains even to the era of the future Redemption, as the Midrash says regarding the offering of Asher, that he was given his name “for the redemption of the Jewish people, as it says, ‘And then all the nations will praise (v’ishru) you” etc.): The name Asher signifies delight, as in the verse “for women have declared me fortunate (ishruni).” The question is, “In that era,” when “delights will be freely available like dust,” as it says at the end of the Rambam – how will man’s faculty of delight be utilized? The answer lies in the what the Rambam says next, that “The occupation of the entire world will be solely to know Hashem” – this will be the delight, “to delight in Hashem,” as it says, “…and I desired no one with You on earth,” meaning that one’s entire desire will be “nothing but You alone.” This also relates to the number eleven, the level of “You are One” that transcends the ten Sefiros, and which is associated with the service of the ketores (which has eleven ingredients, one of which is chelbenah, as it says in today’s Chumash), and with the service of baalei teshuvah, whose thirst for Hashem is specifically for “You alone.” May it be Hashem’s will that we merit to fulfill the mitzvos “in accordance with the command of Your will,” and even higher than that – that the delight of the Creator becomes the delight of the created being etc., and that we merit the fulfillment of the halachic ruling of the Jewish people that we must have “Moshiach Now.”

    Synopsis

Gratitude is a fundamental thing for Jews, as we see with Adam HaRishon who was called upon to express gratitude, and as we also see with the mitzvah of bikkurim, whose purpose is to express gratitude. If it is important to express gratitude to Hashem for His kindness, then certainly one must express gratitude for the kindness he receives from another person. Therefore, when Jews come to show honor or express gratitude, blessings, and good wishes etc. to an individual, then, although the Torah already says, “I will bless those who bless you” – it is also his pleasant duty to personally express his heartfelt thanks, and his blessing that they Hashem grant them all that they need, etc. Though it is understood that their intent is not directed at this person as a private individual, but as someone who has merited the ability to assist those who follow the path of Torah and mitzvos, and to encourage them to strengthen their commitment, or to transmit to them what it says in sefarim and what was heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and they are expressing their blessing for success in all matters of spreading Yiddishkeit to every place and every Jew, without distinction between “your woodcutters” and “your water carriers” and “your heads of your tribes” (who also require assistance in order to ascend in holiness). May these brachos extend to everyone who is, was, and will be connected to this individual – so that they increase in “serving their Maker” and “calling out in the name of Hashem, G-d of the world” everywhere.

    Synopsis

Regarding the Kohen Gadol’s chavitin (as discussed in sheini of parashas Tzav), the Rambam writes: “If the Kohen Gadol died in the morning after he offered half of an isaron and another Kohen Gadol was not appointed, the heirs should bring an entire isaron for his atonement.” But (1) how can the heirs bring the chavitin that day, if they are mourners, who “may not send their offerings”? (2) The fact that the Mishna departs from the wording of the verse and says “his heirs” rather than “his sons” indicates that it may be brought by any of his “heirs,” including those unfit to bring a chavitin offering, such as a chalal, or a grandson of the Kohen Gadol who’s a Levi or Yisrael. How can they bring the chavitin for the Kohen Gadol? (3) What is the Rambam’s source for the idea that the heirs bring it “for his atonement”? All of this can be explained based on the Rogatchover’s explanation that the minchas chavitin brought by the heirs is not theirs, but rather the Kohen Gadol’s.

    Synopsis

Rashi says, “‘Tzav’” always denotes urging, immediately and for future generations.” This teaches that Torah and mitzvos should be fulfilled with alacrity – “being early to perform mitzvos,” and to the extent that the alacrity has an effect not only “immediately” but also “for future generations.” “Generations” means at least two, which, together with one’s own generation, forms three generations. And when it lasts for three generations, it is guaranteed to last forever, as the Gemara says regarding Torah: When it “does not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your seed, nor from the mouth of your seed’s seed” – three generations – then “the Torah returns to its lodging.” Similarly, this applies to the results of Torah, which is mitzvos. Practically speaking, this means to be involved in Mivtza Pesach, and the Mivtza of “turning the heart of the fathers back (through) the children” – with alacrity.

    Synopsis

The verse states (at the beginning of parashas Vayikra), Adam ki yakriv (“When a person will bring”) – when a person wishes to come close to G‑dliness, then mikem korban laHashem (“from you an offering to Hashem”) – he must first and foremost offer himself. The order is (just as in the physical korbanos) to begin with examining oneself to see whether he is tamim – whole – and the examination must be conducted as something that affects the very life of one’s soul, because then he will carefully scrutinize every aspect of his thought, speech, and action, and correct whatever needs perfection. Afterwards, he will be acceptable as a korban – that is, removing the “blood” from the animal, meaning his vitality in material matters, and redirecting it to be used for the service of Hashem etc. One may wonder, how he can possibly bring a korban if he sees that he is not whole – meaning he still has sins that require fixing, “my sin is always before me”? To this, my father-in-law the Rebbe added an explanation on the word mikem (“from you”) – that “it depends on and within you”: every single Jew has the ability to come close to Hashem. And the power to do it comes through “Vayikra el Moshe” in every generation.

    Synopsis

Although the purpose of every mitzvah is to bring the world closer to G-dliness, this is especially true of the mitzvah of korbanos [described in parashas Vayikra], whose very name connotes closeness. Based on the halacha that “All slaughtered offerings that were slaughtered not for their own sake are valid… except for the sin-offering,” it turns out that the theme of closeness is most expressed in the sin-offering. Regarding the sin-offering we find the condition that the person must “return due to his own awareness” – meaning he must have a broken heart because of his sin. Being that all aspects of a korban (the wood, the Mizbeach, the animal itself, the Kohen offering it etc.) must be complete and without blemish, certainly the person for whom the sin-offering is offered must also be whole. Therefore, it follows that his broken heart is in fact what makes him whole. This explains the saying of our Rebbeim, “There is nothing as whole as a broken heart” (and this is also the special quality of the broken Luchos).

    Synopsis

There are two explanations as to why the verse says “Vayikra el Moshe,” without specifying Who called Moshe (such as “Vayikra Hashem el Moshe” or “Vayikra Elokim el Moshe”): (1) The verse refers to a level of G-dliness that is below the concept of names; (2) it refers to a level that transcends the concept of names. (A similar idea is found regarding the two opposite explanations for why Hashem’s name isn’t mentioned in Megillas Esther:(1) Since the Megillah was translated into Persian, if it contained Hashem’s name it might have been translated to the name of another deity, chas v’shalom; (2) the opposite extreme – the Megillah comes from a place that transcends the whole concept of names.) Thus, the word Vayikra connects these two opposite extremes. The lesson is that even if a person finds himself serving Hashem in the lowest possible place, and dealing with the opposite of holiness etc., he is given the strength for it from the highest possible level.

From the publisher's feed

"The Daily Sicha" is a daily discourse of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The Sichos for Sicha Yomis are chosen from throughout the thousands of hours of the Rebbe's talks, based on their appropriateness toward each day.
