My father-in-law the Rebbe is referred to as the Nasi of our generation; although he was seemingly the Nasi of Chabad, we know that from the beginning of his leadership, it was his actual mesiras-nefesh that facilitated Jewish life in the country where the majority of Jews lived. And this approach of actual mesiras nefesh was the defining quality of all thirty years of his leadership, even when he came to countries where much could be accomplished even without such mesiras nefesh. Even when he arrived in the United States, despite his physical health at the time (which naturally precluded working with such mesiras nefesh), he immediately declared that he had come to spread Yiddishkeit, rejecting the notion that “America is different.” Just as at Matan Torah, “Upon every commandment their souls took flight” (i.e. mesiras nefesh) – including the latter ones where mesiras-nefesh isn’t required by law – similarly, there are unique individuals like the Rebbe who devote themselves with actual mesiras nefesh to carrying out the Divine will in all matters, even the seemingly “minor” ones. And he paved the way for us, so that even in times of comfort and prosperity, one can live with manifest mesiras nefesh – and then, everything is done with greater vitality and depth.

(1) Just as the Jewish people were informed of the redemption from the Egyptian exile on Rosh Chodesh Nissan, so too, on every Rosh Chodesh Nissan, there is a renewed empowerment for redemption, and so may it be for us practically on this Rosh Chodesh Nissan. When the Mishkan was inaugurated on Rosh Chodesh Nissan, all twelve Nesi’im united in one offering of “six covered wagons and twelve cattle”; only afterward did each Nasi bring his individual offering on his designated day. The lesson is that on Rosh Chodesh Nissan every Jew is empowered to unite with the entire Jewish people, and together as one to take part in erecting the Mishkan etc. (2) One should increase in studying the Halachos of Pesach. As the Arizal states, even the slightest amount of chametz on Pesach affects one's conduct for the entire year; therefore, one will surely spare no effort to avoid chametz, by studying the relevant halachos etc.

Tonight is Wednesday of the week between Parshas Parah and Parshas HaChodesh. The law of the Parah requires that some ashes of every Parah be set aside “for safekeeping,” to be used in each subsequent Parah; thus, when one Jew is purified, he connects to all Jews throughout all generations as well as those who prepare the Parah, from Moshe Rabbeinu until Moshiach. This further strengthens our yearning and waiting for Moshiach. And from Parashas Parah we proceed to Parashas HaChodesh, which emphasizes redemption. As the Midrash says on the verse “This month shall be for you…” – “When He chose Yaakov and his children, He established for them a Rosh Chodesh of redemption,” the pinnacle of which is the true and complete Redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu. May it be Hashem’s will that this Rosh Chodesh Nissan, and even before then, we merit the fulfillment of the Gemara’s statement that the two letter nuns in “Nissan” allude to “Nisei Nisim” (“miracles upon miracles”), and that Hashem performs a “miracle within a miracle” for every Jew, bringing them abundant good, both materially and spiritually etc., and the miracle of the true and complete Redemption.

(Continued.) It can be explained that even a Jew for whom you need to put in special effort to get him to wait and yearn for Moshiach – it’s not that you need to introduce something new to him, because it’s one of the Thirteen Principles of Faith. You simply have to reveal what’s already within him (similar to how we say “a convert who converted” rather than “a gentile who has converted” because the conversion indicates that the convert already had the spark of a holy soul within him from before, and the conversion simply revealed it). Then we’ll see that he not only gets on board, but even adds enthusiasm to the one who influenced him. And there’s no need for concern from the fact that crying out ad mosai isn’t something we observed in previous generations (I also never saw it), because the reality is that it brings positive results, and in any case, it’s all worthwhile when you look at how the young children cry out “Daloi Golus!” (“Down with exile!”) and the like. In sum: one should not be deterred by those who try to pour cold water on the commotion surrounding the need for Moshiach to come immediately, and one should not keep the Shechinah – and all the previous and future generations – in exile even for a moment longer.

Precisely in recent times, when we’re stressing the need to cry out Ad mosai and to demand the Geulah, there are those shouting that since they’re comfortable in exile…well off materially and well off spiritually, why should we cry out Ad mosai? The only possible explanation is that the two go together: Since it is now more crucial than ever to cry out Ad mosai, therefore the opposition to it from kelipah is greater than ever (similar to the explanation in Chassidus regarding the kelipah of idolatry in the time of Menashe). To o the point that they pour cold water on the notion of demanding Moshiach’s coming, by arguing that after all, today in exile one can keep Torah and mitzvos fully and engage in spreading the wellsprings outward etc., so why should we uproot ourselves and go through the bother of traveling on “heaven clouds”; we should wait until we are forced to leave exile…We see in practice that this causes a weakening not only with regards to crying out Ad mosai and a weakening in the belief that Hashem will “Speedily cause the scion of Dovid to sprout forth,” but also a weakening in the very belief in Moshiach’s coming. (Continuation.) Although this focus on the tremendous quality of becoming independent is emphasized on one’s birthday, one must take a lesson from it for the entire year. Just like we learn from a birthday, that although one is taught the entire Torah in the womb and his body is complete etc., it doesn’t even remotely compare to the quality of becoming a new being upon birth and serving Hashem through his own effort, the same applies to every morning and every moment (as the Baal Shem Tov taught), when a person becomes a new creation. Therefore, in his new reality of today, he cannot suffice with the accomplishments in Torah and mitzvos he has accumulated from before, because as far as today’s reality is concerned, whatever he has from before is handed to him, and it’s not service through his own effort. Since “man is born to toil,” he must toil and increase in his service today with his own effort based on who he is now. This lesson applies even if someone is seventy years old, etc. and has acquired a wealth of Torah and mitzvos etc.: Today, he must be an independent entity distinct from who he was yesterday, and therefore he must not suffice with merely reviewing what he already knows, but rather must toil and innovate in Torah today.

We know that the Nasi of our generation revealed the special practices observed on a birthday (contemplation, introspection, arranging a farbrengen etc.). But seemingly, why do we make such a big deal about a birthday, if the body is already complete before birth, with limbs and sinews and a heartbeat etc.? And the question is even stronger for a Jew, whose spiritual existence is already complete in the womb, and moreover, “a candle is lit above his head… and he is taught the entire Torah,” whereas “once he enters the world, an angel comes and strikes him, making him forget the entire Torah,” so that now he has to relearn everything? The answer is that although the child is complete before birth, both physically and spiritually, he is still considered part of his mother; it is at the moment of birth that the child becomes an independent entity. And this exalted moment, when one’s divine service through his own effort begins, is what we remember and celebrate on a birthday. (To be continued.)

Some people ask: How is it that despite the increased darkness of exile and the diminished stature of our generation, we specifically are the ones who are expected to bring Moshiach? But the verse says, “Do not say…‘that the former days were better than these,’ for not out of wisdom have you asked concerning this.” Since we were placed in this generation, it is certain that we’ve been given the necessary strength for this task – the power of mesiras nefesh. And with this strength, every individual has the ability to influence his entire community, and to transform them into G‑d-fearing, wholesome Jews and chassidim. While one might argue that logic dictates that there’s no way for him to bring this power to actuality, the response is that one must adopt the approach of ad d’lo yada (“not knowing”), meaning absolute certainty that since this task has been placed upon him – he can and must fulfill it, even if he doesn’t understand how. And afterward he will certainly find the proper ways – with logic and reason (“knowing”) – to influence his entire community. The same applies to one’s work within himself etc. And as it says in the Megillah, when Mordechai learned about Haman’s decree, his first response wasn’t to put on a top hat and go to the royal court etc., but rather, “he put on sackcloth and ashes… and cried with a great and bitter cry” – because it affected him in the core of his soul. Only afterward did he begin thinking about what to do via natural means etc.

(1) Through proper chinuch we will merit to raise children who will greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu, and to say, “See what we have raised” despite being in exile, and to the point that “They will recognize Him first” upon the true and complete Redemption. Because the reason Hashem “scattered [the Jewish people] among the nations” was “so that converts would be added to them” (the service of elevating the divine sparks) – therefore, when Hashem sees that the Jewish people have already “converted” and transformed their money and gold and silver etc. into Jewish wealth, they will “be redeemed immediately.” (2) Regarding Parashas Parah, the law is that the ashes of the Parah prepared by Moshe Rabbeinu must be kept as a keepsake, to be mixed into all the subsequent Paros, including the tenth Parah, which will be prepared with the coming of Moshiach. Thus, Parah Adumah, an encompassing mitzvah – “This is the statute of the Torah” – connects the “first redeemer” to the “final redeemer,” and through this, all of the Jewish people in between.

The Rambam divides Hilchos Teshuvah into ten chapters, and it could be said that they correspond to the ten categories among the Jewish people, “Your heads of your tribes…your wood cutters to your water drawer,” as well as the ten faculties of a Jew’s soul: At the end of Hilchos Teshuvah, the Rambam explains that one’s connection with Hashem must be genuine – not for the sake of reward but rather “doing the truth because it is the truth,” “out of love.” And this is the response to those who argue that studying the inner dimension of Torah is only for select individuals: the Rambam rules explicitly at the end of Hilchos Teshuvah that even “simple people and women and children are trained to serve Hashem out of fear until their knowledge increases and they serve out of love.” And “What is the way to love Him…when man contemplates great deeds and creations…” – concepts that are explained in the inner dimension of Torah. And the very act of making positive resolutions, especially with regard to giving tzedakah (when everyone unites in a shlichus of giving tzedakah), will hasten the reward, which is the coming of the Redemption.
