Every Jew has a spark of the soul of Moshe Rabbeinu, which enables all matters of Torah and mitzvos to be considered “a small thing” for him. A simple person understands this plainly, because he knows that Shema Yisrael is a verse in the Torah that “Moshe commanded us” etc.; since it is obvious to him that Moshe was fully immersed in the Torah with his entire life force and soul, he understands that when Moshe gave him this verse, it also contains Moshe’s soul. However, for a learned person special effort is required, to explain to him that all his greatness in Torah comes from the spark of Moshe’s soul within him. When every individual utilizes the level of Moshe within himself to transcend his limitations and boundaries, that impacts him and his surroundings, so that “the entire house becomes filled with light.” And when multiple Jews come together, they realize that there’s a “great light” in the world, whereas only a small amount of the darkness remains – those areas in the world that the light of holiness hasn’t yet reached (though this small amount of darkness is doubled and redoubled, which is why these parts of the world still need to be elevated and perfected, despite the fact that every good deed performed throughout the generations creates an eternal union and increases light).

The Gemara says: “Once the lot fell on the month of Adar, [Haman] greatly rejoiced. He said: The lot has fallen for me in the month that Moshe died…But he did not know that on the seventh of Adar he died, and on the seventh of Adar he was born.” Rashi explains, “the birth is worthy to atone for the death.” Seemingly the verse states, “better is the day of death than the day of one’s birth”; additionally, logic seems to dictate that the day of one’s passing, when his accomplishments are apparent, is more significant than his day of birth, when there’s no indication of what his life will be like. But in Moshe’s case, the essential quality of his life was already revealed on the day he was born – when “the entire house became filled with light.” And this is the connection between parashah Tetzaveh (the only parashah after Moshe’s birth in which his name isn’t mentioned) to 7 Adar, Moshe’s birthday, which usually occurs around the time of parashah Tetzaveh: when Moshe was born and “the entire house became filled with light,” Moshe’s essence – which transcends and came before Moshe’s name (which is associated with his service) – was revealed, and in a practical manner. Therefore, Moshe’s name is not mentioned in parashah Tetzaveh, around the time of Moshe’s birthday, to allude to his essence.

The Rebbe, my father-in-law, once explained why the Gemara says, “Whoever repudiates avodah zarah is called Yehudi” (using the term avodah zarah rather than “idol worship” or the like): The yetzer-hara’s strategy is to first persuade a person to engage in a “foreign service” – a service that might even be a mitzvah in general, but which is nevertheless “foreign” to this person. This is like the error of King Shaul (as recounted in the haftorah of Parashas Zachor), who took pity on the sheep and cattle of Amalek “to sacrifice to Hashem”: he thought he was “fulfilling the word of Hashem,” but he was told that “To obey [is better] than a fine sacrifice; to listen [is better] than the fat of rams” and that, “You rejected the word of Hashem.” For although sacrifices are a form of service and a mitzvah, what was demanded of Shaul was kabbalas ol; when, instead he sought to offer “a fine sacrifice” and “the fat of rams,” this was a service that was foreign to him, and this error ultimately emerged “Haman the Agagite” and the decree “To destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all the Jews.” Conversely, one who repudiates even “avodah zarah” in the sense of a service that is foreign to him – is considered “as if he admits to the entire Torah” and is called a Yehudi, etc. The lesson is that when a person encounters a mitzvah that “cannot be performed through others,” he must first and foremost do it himself, and only afterward can he seek out a service in which he finds enjoyment. And by “waiting for Hashem Who hides His countenance” (kabbalas ol), then “He will do for those who await Him” etc.

The general idea of Mivtzoim – going out to city streets and speaking to people about the importance of Torah study, etc. – is something that stands out, and in this way impacts the entire Jewish people. Like we learn from the verse (in shelishi of parashas Tetzaveh) regarding the gold bells on the hem of the Kohen Gadol’s robe – “Its sound must be heard when enters the Sanctuary” – meaning that even before he enters the Sanctuary, when he puts on the priestly garments, it can already be heard that he is entering the Sanctuary. Similarly, when it comes to “dressing” every Jew – “a kingdom of Kohanim” – in “priestly garments” and drawing them inward toward holiness, it starts with preparing for them a garment with “gold bells... and its sound must be heard;” this is how to engage a person, with the Mivtzoim of Torah study, tefillin, mezuzah, tzedakah, a home filled with sefarim, until reaching the ultimate goal – illuminating the darkness of exile, by illuminating the darkness of Friday night with the light of the Shabbos candles kindled by every Jewish woman and girl, thus bringing about “peace in the home” between husband and wife – which also represents the relationship between Hashem and the Jewish people etc.

During his imprisonment, the Alter Rebbe was asked many questions about himself and the Chassidic approach etc. (among the interrogators were learned individuals who had much interest in the Alter Rebbe’s teachings). After he had answered all their questions, he was asked to explain what he writes at the end of the first chapter of Tanya regarding the distinction between the souls of the nations and the souls of the Jewish people. To this question the Alter Rebbe didn’t respond but merely smiled (and it ended with that). The Alter Rebbe later explained that his intention was to convey to the interrogators that, after having successfully answered all their previous questions, it would not be worthwhile for them to have him explain this, too. Seemingly, the Alter Rebbe could have made his point in other ways; but his smile was an expression of joy, which “sweetens judgments,” and this joy was his best response. This means that even while sitting in the Tainey Soviet, a place designated for those suspected of rebellion against the monarchy – this specifically was a time for joy! And this is the answer to those who ask how we can sit and farbreng and rejoice at a time like this [following the Yom Kippur War]: the answer is that now, when we need to “sweeten judgments,” is precisely the time for joy, and true joy – joy associated with Torah and mitzvos.

Regarding Rashi’s explanation [in rishon of parashas Tetzaveh (28:4)] that the Ephod was “like a type of apron…that noblewomen wear when riding on horseback,” cheder teachers tell the story that Rashi himself once saw a woman riding a horse with such an apron etc., and he used that to describe how the Ephod looked. Although it’s possible the story isn’t true, since it was said of a great leader of the Jewish people, it could be true, and the lesson from it is true. (This is like those who, out of excitement, alter or add details to stories of the Baal Shem Tov, which also explains why it was “Aharon’s praise” that “he did not deviate” from lighting the Menorah it exactly as instructed: despite his spiritual passion from understanding the profound significance of lighting the Menorah etc., he didn’t lose himself, and still managed to do it correctly.) The lesson is that everything one sees must lead to an increase in Torah.

(1) In the Hadran on Shas in the Rebbe Maharash’s maamar, we find two points: (a) The Shas begins with an open mem (Me’eimasai) and ends with a closed mem (bashalom); (b) The end of Shas parallels the beginning. We find both of these in the Rambam’s Mishneh Torah as well: (a) The name of the sefer is “Mishneh Torah,” and it also begins with the verse “Meshoch chasdecha…”, while it concludes with “kamayim layam mechasim.” (b) The end of the sefer, “The entire world will be occupied solely with the knowledge of Hashem…they will attain knowledge of their Creator… the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem, etc.,” parallels the beginning – “To know that there is a Primary Being” upon which all of existence depends etc. (2) On the verse, “I will remove illness from your midst,” the Gemara explains that “Illness refers to bile. And why is it called illness (machalah)? Because [bile] contains eighty-three illnesses; which is the Gematria of machalah (83), and all of them are negated by bread in the morning and a flask of water.” This is the allusion in the 83 sets of halachos in Rambam: Studying the halachos of the Torah – which is the sustenance of the soul – as set forth in the 83 sets of Halachos in Rambam, brings healing through the Torah, in such a way that “I will not place it upon you to begin with.”

In connection with completing the study of the Rambam’s Yad HaChazakah, a siyum should be held in every place. There are several ways to do this: (1) To organize a siyum wherever there are at least ten people who studied, which would result in siyumim in many locations. (2) To organize one central siyum, “The King's glory is in a multitude of people.” (3) To do both, with a gap of several weeks between them. The decision should be made by the local community organizers based on the circumstances of every place. And if there’s any doubt – “a doubt should be resolved stringently”...To ensure that everything is done in an organized manner, proper preparations should begin well in advance. And as discussed many times, this isn’t for any particular group or circle; the study of the Rambam is for every single Jew, until the end of all generations, as the Rambam writes in his introduction, for “small and great alike.” May it be Hashem’s will that all this be accomplished with even greater success than can be anticipated relative to the effort invested, and that it result in greater diligence, persistence, and enthusiasm in the study of the Rambam in the coming year, in a manner of ever-increasing light.

In the fact that donating just a half-shekel acquires a share in all communal sacrifices, we see how “The Torah spares the money of the Jewish people.” Where does the recent practice of squandering money to travel overseas for a bris, a wedding, an engagement of a relative or friend come from? Especially yeshiva students, whose focus should be on learning Torah in a such a way that “Torah is their occupation.” (If they have extra money, they should give it to tzedakah in merit of the simcha). Similarly regarding trips to the holy sites: A bochur who has yet to learn numerous masechtos or maamarim – what’s he lacking… a trip to holy sites?! And people go into debt for such things? This also applies to the yeshiva administration that grants permission for such trips: Their role is to educate the students to study Nigleh and Chassidus diligently and tirelessly (and to ensure that the students lack nothing in material matters). That they should decide on their own if it’s genuinely necessary to travel overseas for a sibling’s wedding and squander money on it – I didn’t see such a practice in the previous generation…

In the Rambam’s drawing of the Menorah [commanded in shelishi of Parashas Terumah], the goblets appear wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, contrary to their usual form. (Although the Rambam certainly had a source for this from a Midrash etc.,) we must understand why. It can be likened to the windows of the Beis Hamikdash, which were “narrow and broad” — “wide on the outside, and their mouths closed and narrow on the inside... so that its light would go out from the Heichal to illuminate the world” (Rashi). Similarly, the goblets of the Menorah – the vessel through which the light extended from the Beis Hamikdash to the entire world – were narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, indicating that the primary purpose is to reveal and draw down the light of the Beis Hamikdash into the world below. Similarly, when one drinks from goblet – pouring its contents outward – its wider side faces downward.
