    Synopsis

Although Torah and mitzvos must be done with joy and pleasure (“joy and gladness of heart”), the primary requirement is joy, which is specifically expressed outwardly. The basis for true joy is the fact that every Jew, whoever he may be, possesses the “second soul in a Jew, which is actually a part of Hashem from above.” This is the connection between the Rema’s ruling at the end of Orach Chaim, “One who has a cheerful heart who always has a feast,” and what it says at the beginning of Shulchan Aruch, “I have placed Hashem before me always.” Seemingly, how can both of these be expected simultaneously, considering that “There is no righteous person on earth who does good and never sins”?! The answer is that because a Jew possesses the “actual part of Hashem from above,” it is certain that ultimately “he that is banished will not be cast from Him,” and he will do teshuvah properly, such that “his willful sins will be transformed into merits for him”; therefore he “has a cheerful heart” and is “always feasting.” Joy provides the strength to overcome the darkness of the exile as well as the darkness of the inner exile, which is the illusion that the world can present an obstacle to Torah and mitzvos, while in truth it is only a test.

    Synopsis

In connection to what has been discussed lately regarding the Rema’s statement at the end of the Shulchan Aruch – that “he who has a cheerful heart always has a feast” – because the “smart aleck” (yetzer hara) has gotten involved etc., it’s necessary to once again bring up the prohibition of drinking mashke before the age of forty, and the conditions placed upon it etc. It’s important to remember that the Rema writes this not in the context of daily practice, but at the end of the laws of Purim. Most of the Shulchan Aruch’s requirements are tied to a specific time and place. For example, the obligation to “become intoxicated” applies specifically on Purim, and the mitzvah of eating matzah applies specifically on the first night of Pesach, not after Pesach (even though eating matzah during Pesach is considered “eating faith”); if one wishes to make a bracha on matzah after Pesach, it would fall under the category of “the robber who blesses…” Rachmana litzlan. In this case: the practice of “he who has a cheerful heart always has a feast” in the literal sense applies specifically to joyous occasions like Purim. But the rest of the time, it’s like Rashi says on this verse “(All the days of a poor man are bad) but he who has a cheerful heart always has a feast” – “Our Rabbis expounded what they expounded in Chelek (in Sanhedrin) – where it says that this refers to “masters of Mishnah” or “masters of Talmud.”

    Synopsis

In Hilchos Teshuvah (2:2 – today’s Rambam) the Rambam writes a major chiddush: “What constitutes teshuvah? That a sinner should abandon his sin…so that He who knows the hidden matters testifies about him that he will never return to this sin ever again.” Seemingly, why is his future state relevant to his teshuvah in the present? On the contrary, there are numerous proofs that teshuvah is valid even when we aren’t certain that the person will never return to his sin; for example, “Those who play with dice” become requalified for testimony “when they break their dice,” at which point we don’t know if they will sin again, and nevertheless money can be extracted from another person on the basis of their testimony. Additionally, we see in practice that even when a Jew does teshuvah and becomes requalified as a witness, it sometimes happens that afterwards he stumbles again in the same sin etc.? We could have explained that the Rambam means that one’s teshuvah must be such that based on his current state, there is no possibility of him ever returning to his sin, in which case there would be no contradiction to the fact that he might stumble again tomorrow, because “his inclination renews itself upon him every day” with new challenges etc. But when he says that Hashem, “He who knows the hidden matters testifies about him that he will never return…” that indicates that he will never in fact return to this sin! We must therefore say (although it doesn’t fit perfectly with the plain reading of the Rambam’s words) that there are multiple levels in teshuvah, and here the Rambam is referring to the ultimate perfection of teshuvah.

    Synopsis

Involvement in Mivtzoim is even for Jewish women and girls (particularly the Purim Campaign – the Megillah is called “Megillas Esther”). And here there’s a wondrous lesson from the verse (in parashas Vayakhel), “All the women whose hearts inspired them with wisdom spun the goat hair.” Rashi explains that this involved “an especially skilled craft, that they spun it directly off the backs of the goats.” When these women saw that they possessed a special skill not possessed by other women (who brought the “techeiles, purple and scarlet wool” etc. in an ordinary fashion, as it says in the previous verse) – they utilized that skill for the Mishkan. Similarly, if someone is naturally gifted with a certain talent, or if Hashem has granted him success in business and the like, he must use it for Torah and mitzvos – for Hashem to “dwell among them” through this “especially skilled craft.” And since this lesson is learned a verse concerning women, it is upon the women to set a living example of this etc.

    Synopsis

(Continued.) The lesson is that when a person sees that most of his day is occupied with his other needs, and only a small portion is dedicated to Torah and mitzvos – and moreover, for a numbers of years he wasn’t even obligated to keep Torah and Mitzvos , he may ask: Why wasn’t I born obligated in mitzvos, and why wasn’t I created in such a way that I only have to engage in Torah and mitzvos? The answer is that, “The entire world was created only to serve as companions for him”; the Megillah reading doesn’t begin with “For the Jews there was light – this refers to Torah,” but with “And it came to pass in the days of Achashverosh… who ruled from Hodu to Kush.” And it was specifically this led to “it was reversed.” And this will apply even in the days of Moshiach: Even then, there will exist “strangers standing and pasturing your sheep” and planting and sowing etc. – but their entire existence will be secondary to the Jewish people. The main lesson is regarding our service in the present era: One should not be alarmed by the fact that the Jewish people are a small minority in the world, because what matters is not quantity, but quality – the connection to the Source of Life etc. And as we see specifically in recent times how even something very small can contain tremendous power etc.

    Synopsis

The idea that the entire world runs for the sake of a small group of Jews who observe Torah and mitzvos can be understood by first explaining two puzzling aspects of the Megillah reading: (1) The halacha is that the Megillah must be read from the beginning – “It happened in the days of Achashverosh…” – which seemingly is not essential to the core of the story? (2) Our Sages state: “All the books of the Prophets will be nullified in the times of Moshiach, except for Megillas Esther and Halachos,” but what is so unique about the Megillah that it alone will not be nullified when Moshiach comes? The answer is that reading the Megillah from the beginning reveals that Hashem orchestrated the world in such a way that Achashverosh would be king, and rule over 127 provinces, and that he would make a royal feast etc., and all for the sole purpose that, years later, the Jewish people would experience the miracle that “it was reversed.” And this unique quality will be relevant even in the times of Moshiach: Although in the future era other nations will exist, as well as animals, plants, and inanimate objects – all of them will be secondary to the ultimate purpose – the existence of the Jewish people who will be engaged in Torah study. (To be continued.)

    Synopsis

Revi’i of Parashas Ki Sisa discusses Moshe’s request, “Please let me see Your glory,” and Hashem’s response, “You will not be able to see My face… You will see My back, but My face will not be visible.” It stands to reason that Moshe’s request to see Hashem face was also fulfilled at least partially. That is, the verse can be read as follows: “You will see My back and My face…” (with “You will see” applying to “My face” as well), just that the vision of “My face” will be in a manner of “not visible.” Meaning: the very fact that a certain property is negated from something shows that there is some relation between them; otherwise, there would be no need to negate it. And this is the novelty in Hashem’s response “and My face will not be visible”: that a connection was created (albeit in a manner of negation) between Moshe’s perception (“seeing”) and Hashem’s face.

    Synopsis

The Gemara says: “Where is Mordechai alluded to in the Torah? As it is written (in rishon of parashas Ki Sisa), ‘mar dror’ (pure myrrh), which is translated as ‘mira dachya.’” Seemingly, what connection does Mordechai Hatzaddik have to Targum, which signifies exile, and to “mar dror,” a fragrance derived from the blood of an impure animal – which represents the service of baalei teshuvah? The Rebbe Maharash explains that it’s because of the people of Mordechai’s generation. This can be understood based on the explanation of the verse, “Return, Yisroel, to Hashem your G-d, for you have stumbled in your iniquity”: seemingly, “stumbling” applies to the level of Yaakov (the “heel”) of the Jewish people, not Yisroel? But the truth is that when the heel stumbles, it’s because something isn’t correct with the head (which supplies vitality to the heel). This is also why, following the sin of the golden calf, Hashem said to Moshe (in parashas Ki Sisa): “Go, descend” – “Descend from your greatness” – even though Moshe on the mountain with Hashem when the golden calf was made and he had no involvement in the sin – because since they are “your people,” and “isn’t it only for the sake of the Jewish people that I granted you greatness,” therefore, if there was a deficiency in them, this reflected a deficiency in Moshe as well. Similarly, regarding Mordechai: Since he was the head of the Sanhedrin, whose job is to impart wisdom to the people so they would not come to sin in the first place, and yet in his generation, there were those who “had enjoyment from the feast of that wicked one,” that showed that Mordechai also had to do teshuvah.

The women weren’t willing to contribute toward the golden calf (as it says in sheini of Parashas Ki Sisa), but when it came to building the Mishkan it was the opposite – the women were the first to donate and “The men accompanied the women.” It says in Kisvei HaArizal that this generation, the generation of the footsteps of Moshiach, is a gilgul of the generation of the desert. Therefore, the lesson is that it is up to the women not to allow “bowing to the golden calf” – not to allow compromise in Yiddishkeit for the sake of earning money (improperly earned money ends up going toward doctors chas v’shalom or taxes etc.) and to the contrary – to turn their home into a Mishkan for Hashem. In this way they will merit to have good health for the entire family and to raise their children to Torah, marriage, and good deeds, and to go with them immediately to greet Moshiach.

This is true both on the positive side – transforming America into a place of Torah, and on the preventative side, negating absolutely and decisively the claim that “America is different,” and establishing instead that G‑dliness must be revealed even here. “America is no different” doesn’t just apply to one’s immediate surroundings in his particular city in the United States, nor even just to the United States as a whole, but also to other countries around the world. And not just for Jews (because the United States where the majority of the Jewish people reside), but also to the nations of the world, because Hashem determines many global matters through the United States.
