Korach’s argument to Moshe [as it says in Rishon of Parashas Korach], “Why do you raise yourselves above Hashem’s assembly” is seemingly not understood: after all, he himself was a Levi, who “raised himself above Hashem’s assembly by taking part in the service of guarding the Mishkan, which was reserved only for the tribe of Levi? The answer is that Korach knew that in some respects, one person is holier than another, but he argued that in those matters where “the entire congregation are all holy” – one person ought not be raised over another. And since he heard from Moshe that even in those matters there are some people who are holier and from whom more is demanded, he argued that Moshe had his own ulterior motive here, chas v’shalom. The wondrous lesson here is as follows: A Jew might think that when is he different from all other nations, and when does “Hashem stand over him…and searches his reins and heart to see if he serves Him properly,” and when should he educate his children – only in matters of Torah and mitzvos, but in those matters where Jews and non-Jews are equal, like eating, drinking, and conducting business, it’s enough to behave like a human being and not steal, etc., but no more. And to this comes Moshe’s response, that even in such matters, a Jew’s holiness must be evident, and he must behave like a Jew. [To be continued.]

The fact that the spies were chosen by Moshe Rabbeinu, and “at that time they were righteous” [as it says in Parashas Shelach] – shows that their argument had some merit. The Alter Rebbe explains that they believed that for a person to devote himself to Divine service, it was preferable to live the way they lived in the desert, where all their needs were provided for, rather than living in Eretz Yisrael, where they would have to spend time earning a livelihood. Moshe’s response was that, “The land is very, very good”: Hashem’s true will, and the ultimate purpose of studying Torah and performing mitzvos, is to transform even the mundane aspects of life into “Eretz Yisrael,” imbued with Torah and mitzvos. The lesson for graduating students and counselors is that the purpose of their learning is to take what they learned and stand on their own feet, to influence the world around them and to influence and guide those under their care etc. in accordance with what they have learned. And in this merit, they will be blessed with all that they need.

[Continued.] It is specifically by recognizing that all success comes from Hashem that one truly brings “blessing into your home.” On the surface, it doesn’t seem that way, because a non-Jew has bread even without separating Challah; but this external appearance is avodah zarah (“foreign service”); it is foreign from the truth. It only appears this way so that a Jew, with his free choice, can recognize and reveal that Hashem is the Master of Universe and “there is none besides Him.” A Jew nullifies this mistaken appearance of the world not so much by studying Torah and performing mitzvos, but by recognizing, even when “working in the field” etc., that his livelihood comes only from Hashem. Therefore the Sages said, “One who fulfills the mitzvah of Challah is considered as though he nullified avodah zarah” (which implies that before he performed the mitzvah, there was avodah zarah): the world has its nature that appears “foreign” to G-dliness, and the Jew nullifies that “foreignness” by giving the “first portion of your dough” – which seems to come via natural means – to Hashem, thereby proclaiming and revealing that in really, the entire world, including the goyishkeit within it, all comes from Hashem. (Conversely, one who neglects the mitzvah of Challah chas v’shalom upholds this appearance of “foreignness”). And the mitzvah of Challah is primarily entrusted to Jewish women and girls.

Parashas Shelach discusses the mitzvah of Challah; in Yechezkel, Challah is described as one of the first mitzvos to be fulfilled immediately upon the future Redemption, and as a mitzvah that “brings enduring blessing to your home.” Moreover, our Sages tell us that “Whoever fulfills the mitzvah of Challah is considered as if he nullified idolatry, and whoever neglects the mitzvah of Challah is considered as if he upheld idolatry.” (This idea is also alluded in Chumash by the juxtaposition of the verse “And if you should err and not do…” – which refers to idolatry – with the mitzvah of challah). Seemingly, what is the connection between the mitzvah of challah (which seems like a rather simple mitzvah), and idolatry, the most severe sin? The answer is that when a person sees that he toils every day, plowing, sowing, reaping, and grinding etc. to bring home bread (the very same labors his non-Jewish neighbor performs), it is natural to feel that the bread is the result of his own effort. But this is the meaning of the mitzva of challah: to give “the first portion of your dough” to Hashem – not as tzedakah but a debt one owes to Hashem, in recognition of the fact that the bread comes not by “my strength and the might of my hand” but rather “it is Hashem Who gives you strength to make wealth.” [To be continued.]

(a) On the third day of Creation, “It was good” was repeated twice; our Sages tell us that it was “good for Heaven and good for creatures.” The lesson is as follows: A Jew’s job is to connect “Heaven” – matters of the soul and holiness – to the “creatures,” matters of the body and materiality, and turn them into one entity. (b) A lesson from the words of Yehoshua and Calev [in Shelishi of Parashas Shelach], “If Hashem desires us He will bring us to this land... Do not fear the people of the land for they are our bread... and Hashem is with us…”: “Conquering the land” (the reason for which the spies were sent, etc.) in the spiritual sense is the descent of the soul into the body, to transform the physicality of the world (“Eretz Canaan”) into Eretz “Yisrael” – a dwelling place for Hashem. Every generation has its “Yehoshua and Calev” – in our generation it is the Nasi Hador – who declare that since “Hashem desires us” and “Hashem is with us” etc., we will certainly succeed in this mission.

When a Jew looks around, he sees a “land” that “consumes its inhabitants” and contains “men of measure” [as it says in Sheini of Parashas Shelach]. Meaning, he finds himself in a “land” where everything is about earning money and “its fruit,” and the land thus “consumes” the person, who is supposed to transform it into an “inhabited land” etc. So he might argue, why should he deal with this; he’d rather seclude himself in the four cubits of Torah study, etc., and not get involved with such a “land”! Or he might argue, where can he find the strength not to be affected by all this, and to continue studying Torah and doing mitvzos, and educating his children not to conform to this “way of the land”? The story of the spies teaches us that in fact, Hashem does want us to go to “Eretz Canaan” and transform it into the “Eretz Yisrael.” And a Jew has the ability to do it because “the Holy One, blessed be He, assists him,” and he has the “Yehoshua and Calev” within himself, which empower him to see that “the land is very, very good.”

(a) A lesson from Hashem’s command at the beginning of Parashah Shelach, “Send out for yourself men who will scout the Land...”: In order for a Jew to turn his environment into “Eretz Yisrael” (by making it a place that “desires to fulfill the will of its Maker”) – he must “scout” and explore Torah, because Torah teaches how to live daily life according to Hashem’s will. (2) We know that the women remained steadfast in their desire to enter the land, even when the spies warned that it was fraught with great difficulties; by performing our divine service completely – completeness of the Torah, completeness of the people, and completeness of the land – which comes through educating our children in a complete manner – we will merit very soon to enter the land with the true and complete Redemption.

(1) As we stand (at the conclusion) of the 15th of Sivan, “the fullness of the moon” of the third month – it is a fitting time to make an accounting with regards to the completeness of all aspects of the month, the main aspect being Torah, which we received at Sinai, when the decree of separation between the higher and lower realms was abolished, and after which the Torah is “not in heaven” but specifically in this lowest world. (2) The beginning of Parashas Behaalosecha discusses the menorah, which represents the entire Jewish people (“a menorah of all gold”) whose seven branches (the seven categories of Jews) are “one hammered piece of pure gold” – one entity. This is relates to and follows the unity of the Jewish people at the time of the giving of the Torah, starting from Rosh Chodesh Sivan, when they were united “like one man with one heart” in hearing the Aseres Hadibros, and where “at each utterance their souls flew away and the Holy One, blessed be He, returned it to them with the dew of resurrection.” May it be His will that very soon the “dew of resurrection” be revealed, and “your eyes shall see your Teacher” openly, with the true and complete Redemption.

(1) On the verse, “And the man Moshe was very humble, more so than any person on the face of the earth” [in shevi’i of Behaalosecha], it is explained in maamarim that Moshe felt humble particularly compared to the generation of the footsteps of Moshiach, because he felt that for someone of his stature, and in his position, to study Torah etc., can’t compare to someone studying Torah etc. despite living in the conditions that will prevail in the time leading up to Moshiach etc. Therefore, one should not underestimate any deed done in our times, no matter how small it may seem, because we cannot know Hashem’s calculations. This also explains why, although “this generation – is it worthy?” – the task of finally bringing Moshiach was specifically given to our generation, and “the work is called by the name of the one who completes it.” (2) Hashem says regarding Moshe Rabbeinu, “In all My house, he is faithful;” Moshe was a faithful servant who was totally nullified to Hashem, without any separate identity of his own, and therefore Hashem trusted that Moshe’s will would align automatically with Hashem’s will. Moshe instills this degree of self-nullification to every Jew – the ability to do everything related to Hashem’s will with kabbolas ol, to the point that it becomes one’s nature and he does it automatically.

The nasi of generation was asked how he was publicizing the idea of “L’Alter L’Teshuva, L’alter L’Geulah” on the one hand – i.e., that Moshiach is coming now – but on the other hand he was making plans for buildings and yeshivas etc. that would take years to complete? He explained that this has already been done long ago: When the Jewish people were in the desert, they set up the Mishkan every time they came to a new place, even if they were staying there for just one night or one day! [See revi’i of Behaalosecha]. The lesson is that as long as a Jew is in exile, even for just one more moment, he must work with the fullest energy to bring Moshiach, and this will cause Moshiach to come a moment sooner. And to the question, after so many years in exile, what difference does one more moment make?...When you consider the fact that as long as the Jewish people are in exile, the Shechinah, along with tens of thousands of angels, and all the souls of the Jewish people throughout all generations, all remain in exile, too, it is clear that even one moment is a very long time both in quantity and quality! This is a question that children wouldn’t ask; the problem is the adults and “intellectuals”....
