Shavuos is associated with Jewish unity, as the Midrash states, “If the Jewish people lacked even one person, the Divine Presence would not have been revealed to them…”; similarly, in the days leading up to Shavuos, “Yisrael camped there” in the singular – “as one man with one heart.” This is one of the reasons for a farbrengen – gathering Jews together – on the last day of the Tashlumin for Shavuos. Tashlumin doesn’t only mean “filling in” what was lacking, but also “perfection.” This aspect of Tashlumin applies (a) to every Jew, because even if someone’s service on Shavuos wasn’t lacking, he can always achieve a higher level of perfection; and (b) for “all seven days” from the beginning of Shavuos until the 12th of Sivan, because one can become more perfect every day. Therefore, the 12th of Sivan, the final day of Tashlumin, is the appropriate time to complete all aspects of Shavuos with the utmost perfection!

The Rebbe sings the niggun Tzamah lecha nafshi kamah lecha besari (“My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You” – from today’s Tehilim). Ei! Tee durin marku, shto tee yedish na yarmarku, nye kupilayesh, nye prodayesh, tolko robish svarku (“O, you foolish Mark, why travel to the market. You don’t buy, you don’t sell, you only cause strife”), and then explains the niggun’s meaning: The world is like a “marketplace,” to which the soul descends in order to “profit” by uniting with Hashem Himself through the Toah and mitzvos. In order for the person’s service not to be “bread of shame,” Hashem creates the yetzer hara to entice and tempt the person, so that the person must struggle to “choose life.” But even the yetzer hara wants the person not to obey it. And this is the argument against it: once it has brought the person to a state where “My soul thirsts for You,” it has already done its job, and anything it does further is merely “causing trouble”; why does it continue to interfere? (The reason is because the person himself provokes the yetzer hara, Rachmana litzlan, to go beyond what it would do on its own). Now ought to be the time when “darkness is transformed to light,” when one loves Hashem “with both of your inclinations,” at which time one merits that “So may I see You in holiness” etc.

The week of Parashah Behaalosecha is an appropriate time to call attention to and to emphasize and encourage with regards to the inner meaning of “When you kindle the lamps” – to kindle the “lamp of Hashem, the soul of man,” the soul of every Jew, regardless of which of the seven kinds of Jews he belongs to – to kindle it “until the flame rises by itself,” and in such a way that “the seven lamps shall shine toward the face of the menorah,” connecting a Jew to his inner core. This has a particular connection the Shabbos candles campaign, as the Midrash says, “If you keep the Shabbos, candles, I will show you the candles of Tzion” – the “kindling of the lamps” literally, with the coming of Moshiach. In a broader sense, the parashah relates to spreading Yiddishkeit in general, starting with the general Mitzvah Campaigns: the campaign to love every Jew (each of whom is like a “Kohen Gadol”), regardless of which of the seven types of Jews he belongs to – and from this comes the other campaigns: Jewish education (which is especially timely because people are now registering their children for summer and camp and school etc.), Torah study, tefillin, mezuzah, tzedakah, “a house full of sefarim,” Shabbos candles, kosher, and family purity – and all of this in a manner of m’lchatchilah ariber.

At the beginning of the parashah, the literal meaning of the words “Naso es rosh,” is to “lift up the heads,” through which the entire person is elevated. (Though the verse refers to a portion of the tribe of Levi, nevertheless, it applies to every Jew, as the Rambam rules, “not only the tribe of Levi” but every Jew whose “spirit inspires him” is given the full potential to attain even the level of the Kohen Gadol and the Holy of Holies etc.). For a person must conduct himself in such a way that everything he does is guided by the intellect (in the head) of the Torah, so that it is evident that the Torah is “our Torah” – by acting according to the directives of the Torah at all times, on weekdays and certainly on Shabbos and Yom Tov, and everywhere.

(1) On the fifth of Sivan, the Jewish people said, “We will do and we will hear,” putting “we will do” before “we will hear.” Though they are a “wise and understanding people” this self-abnegation to first “do” comes from the inner core of the soul; only afterwards is it expressed in the soul’s faculties, “we will hear.” In practical terms: Since “these days are remembered and observed,” on the fifth of Sivan one must accept upon himself anew to fulfill all the mitzvos in every detail, and in such a way that “we will do” comes before “we will hear”; this is the way to prepare for receiving the Torah on Shavuos, and for it to continue this way in in one’s performance of the mitzvos throughout the entire year. (2) Our sages said, “When the Jewish people put ‘we will do’ before ‘we will hear’…the ministering angels came and tied two crowns upon every Jew….” The lesson is that every Jew has the power to cause everything he accepts upon himself on Shavuos to be done in such a way that “we will do” comes before “we will hear,” and thereby to reveal the “crown” within himself, to the point that every Jew becomes a “king” (“They are kings”) – “At the kings word, a mountain is uprooted,” including the evil inclination that “appears to them like a mountain” etc. Making this resolution on the fifth of Sivan is an appropriate way to prepare for receiving the Torah etc.

There are two points regarding the Giving of the Torah: (1) When the Torah was given, “He chose us from all the nations”; (2) therefore, “He gave us His Torah” for us to study it as “the Torah of the Holy One, Blessed Be He,” meaning, although “it is your wisdom and understanding in the eyes of the nations,” it is only when someone has no ulterior motives and cares about nothing but Hashem (“Hashem is with him”) that the law can “be according to him.” To prepare for the Giving of the Torah, these two points must be emphasized. (1) “He chose us from all the nations”: At the time of the Giving of the Torah, the Creator and Ruler of the world took the Jewish people and made them “a treasure from all the peoples,” and from that moment He established a boundary and distinction “between the Jewish people and the nations”! Anyone who wishes to change this by trying to implement different “statutes” defies the Giving of the Torah, which must be accepted nowadays “with reverence, fear, quaking, and trembling” just as it was at Sinai. (2) Only someone who “Hashem is with him,” i.e., who is concerned solely with what it says in the Torah of the Holy One, Blessed Be He, without any other considerations or ulterior motives, can issue proper halachic rulings. May it be His will that just as when the Torah was given at Sinai “He overturned the mountain above them like a basin,” “Pouring a spirit for us from on high,” which put the Jewish people in their pure state, so, too, may it be for every Jew in his own life etc.

It was only when the Jewish people said that their children would be their “guarantors” that Hashem agreed to give the Torah. Therefore, as we stand in the days of preparation for Shavuos, we must know that “our children are our guarantors!” This is therefore an appropriate time to discuss the importance of Jewish education in Torah and mitzvos: Some people give their children an education during the year that includes secular subjects. They should take advantage of this country’s practice of summer vacation, when the children are free from their secular studies, to increase in Torah study – either by sending them to a summer camp where Torah is studied in abundance (in quantity and quality), or finding them good teachers (from among the many teachers who likewise have vacation during this time of year) to teach them in a cheder. And although summer vacation doesn’t begin until a few weeks after Shavuos, as with all things that require preparation, efforts should be made in this regard starting now.

The Hayom Yom for Rosh Chodesh Sivan states: “‘Throw a stick into the air and it will land on its root-side’...Sometimes the root is covered and hidden...And this is the work of one who desires life, to remove the coverings….” Though this adage was said with regards to Chassidim and studying Chassidus etc., nowadays, after having been engaged in spreading the wellsprings outward during the forty-five years since this adage was published in Hayom Yom, during the years when the Rebbe, my father-in-law, was still alive physically in this world, as well as the years after his passing (when these activities increased greatly) – it now applies to every Jew: Every Jew must know that the nasi of our generation has elevated him above the materiality of the world to the air above (“avir” – comprised of or and yud), so that the Jewish spark within him shines openly. Therefore, every Jew will certainly “fall back on his root” throughout his entire life. This teaches us and empowers us in general, and especially as we stand after Rosh Chodesh Sivan, when the entire Jewish people stood “as one man with one heart,” thereby becoming vessels to receive the Torah – the wisdom and will of Hashem – as we approach the conclusion of the service of Sefiras Ha’Omer, through which we bring about “abundant bounty to all the worlds” etc.

There’s a clear halachic ruling in [today’s] Rambam and in the Shulchan Aruch, that “One who betroths a woman…on condition that I am completely righteous, even if he is completely wicked, her status is that of uncertain betrothal; perhaps he had thoughts of teshuvah in his heart.” Meaning: a Jew who was completely wicked all his life, and from whom we never heard any word of teshuvah, and even if his sins include stealing, and he still refuses to return what he sole – if he said “on condition that I am completely righteous,” we take into account that he might have had thoughts of teshuvah, and she is considered betrothed! Similarly: some ask, if it’s true that all these people had an awakening of teshuvah [following the Six-Day War], why don’t we see them changing their lives? But the ruling in the Shulchan Aruch is the opposite: even if one is still holding onto what he stole, nevertheless, “her status is that of uncertain betrothal.” And the law is that even if he later insists that he didn’t do teshuvah, it’s too late; he cannot undo the teshuvah from the time of the betrothal. How much more so in this case: if one of those hundreds of thousands of Jews who experienced this awakening cries out, “on condition that I am completely righteous,” “she is definitely betrothed”! Because here there is no doubt that “he had thoughts of teshuvah in his heart.” He certainly did, and his later conduct doesn’t change that, especially considering that many of them actually did change their ways, and therefore we should “learn that which is not explicit from that which is explicit.”

[Continued.] (3) The yetzer hara’s major argument is, what is this business of someone mixing into my personal affairs and telling me I should put on tefillin and keep Shabbat etc. – “Mind your own business!” This argument, too, was put to rest at the time of the military call-up: it was obvious to everyone that the way you conduct yourself, and whether you are “fearful and faint-hearted,” isn’t a personal issue, but rather affects the fate of your entire unit and the fate of the entire people dwelling in Tzion! Everyone saw how all these arguments of the yetzer hara were put to rest, in the days leading up to receiving the Torah, a taste of the future Redemption. The lessons apply for all time. You can no longer argue that that’s impossible to have kabbolas ol and put “We will do” before “We will hear,” because you saw personally that when you saw that the holiness of Eretz Yisrael and the holiness of a Jewish life was at stake – you followed orders happily and without question! This is what led to the victory, and this is the call to every Jew.
