[In the sichah, the Rebbe references the call-up of the Israeli military in the lead up to the Six-Day War, which took place shortly before Shavuos that year.] We are now on the Eve of the Redemption, which is considered “Erev Shabbos” – when there is a “taste” of the Redemption, and one is shown a glimpse of how he can live the way we will live when Moshiach comes. (But one must know that it’s only Erev Shabbos, not Shabbos itself, and it’s only a taste.) As Recently we saw in the days leading up to the giving of the Torah on Shavuos, how one jostle completely nullified all the arguments of the yetzer hara: (1) The yetzer hara argues, why should you follow orders blindly, saying “We will do” before “We will hear”? But as we saw, those called up to the army reported for duty without asking any questions, without consulting their families etc. – and they did it happily. And this was true of everyone from “your heads of your tribes” to “your water drawers”; the moment they knew that the call-up was directed to them and that it affected them, they heeded the call without any questions whatsoever. (2) The yetzer hara argues: who says you must listen to the person giving you orders; you might be more capable and more experienced than him? But when the troops were called up this wasn’t a factor either; the very basis of an army is following the commander’s orders. And it doesn’t matter if the soldier is smarter or greater than the commander: if he’s the commander, you must obey his orders!

The reason the Gemara says that one may conduct business with his father’s property from twenty years old is explained in Etz Chaim: that is the age at which a person’s intellect is fully developed. Based on this, the Alter Rebbe explains the verse [at the beginning of Bamidbar], “Take the count of the Jewish people according to their ‘skulls’ from twenty years old and upwards”: Seemingly, when counting the Jews “fit to go out to the army in Israel,” why does it refer to the skull, which is just an externality, whereas the mind defines the quality of man? He explains that the “skull” represents man’s will; in order to “go out to the army in Israel,” i.e., to conquer the world, intellect alone is not enough. Rather, one must have mesiras-nefesh – surrendering his will. Just that such mesiras-nefesh is achieved through first contemplating Hashem’s greatness with mind in its fullest state – “twenty years old.” Then one can “raise” the intellect of the mind to the level of the “skull” (the will) etc., and this will bring him to the mesiras-nefesh required to “go out to the army in Israel.”

(a) The Jewish people in the desert were counted “from twenty years old and upward, all who are fit to go out to the army in Israel” (as it says at the beginning of Bamidbar). By nature, it is impossible that among more than six hundred thousand men “from twenty years old and upward,” there wouldn’t be at least some who weren’t healthy and strong enough to be “fit to go out to the army,” especially in the desert, etc. Yet here we see a wondrous thing: all the Jewish men from twenty years old and upward were “fit to go out to the army”! This teaches us that when the Jewish people follow the Torah, like our ancestors, who at the time were coming from the giving of the Torah – they are not subject to the rules of nature, not even regarding their bodily health! (b) Regarding the second counting of the Jewish people [in Parashas Pinchas; see Rashi there etc.], it says that Hashem testified about the Jewish people that they left Egypt with the same holiness and purity as when they arrived there; they were not influenced by Egypt despite having been slaves there for 210 years, and despite Egypt being the most advanced land in the world in philosophy etc. They were certain that Hashem was with them, (“I will go down with you to Egypt”), and that by behaving according to Hashem’s instructions, they would leave Egypt.

Shabbos Mevarchim of the month of Sivan is special in that Sivan is the “third month,” during which the “three-fold Torah” was given to the “three-fold nation” etc.; that is, this month has a special connection to the Torah (and mitzvos), which were given to the Jewish people. Since the very idea of blessing every month comes from the Torah, which was given in the month of Sivan, it emerges that the Shabbos Mevarchim before Sivan includes the Shabbos Mevarchim of every month of the year. The whole idea of Shabbos Mevarchim is a positive thing introduced specifically in exile; it was only after the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash, and after the discontinuance of establishing Rosh Chodesh based on the sighting of the moon, that a fixed calendar was established. This made it possible to know in advance when the new month will be, so that we can prepare for the new month properly, and more importantly: we can bless the new month on the Shabbat before it etc.

[Continued.] The abovementioned “ten miracles performed for our ancestors in Egypt” also relate to the current events being constantly discussed: Even a Jew who is “in Egypt,” within the constraints and boundaries, who said and did something he shouldn’t have – like “our ancestors,” among whom were those who wanted to remain under the natural conduct of Egypt – however, this isn’t his true identity. Rather, “his inclination forced him,” and someone who is forced is “exempt” (though of course he shouldn’t celebrate it…rather, he should be saddened at being in such a situation). And the reality is that even “in Egypt”, “ten miracles” are performed for a Jew in every aspect of his life (included the ten faculties he possesses). This is why, as recently seen, “they schemed a scheme and it was nullified” etc. Just that the miracles are clothed in nature, and according to the Torah we are still “in Egypt,” and this isn’t yet even the “beginning of the Redemption”; the open miracles will happen at the Redemption itself – “ten at the sea.” This is the lesson for all generations: even in “Egypt” and in exile, there are miracles in everything, and there is nothing to fear! Just that the miracles are clothed in nature; this is the preparation for the “ten at the sea” very soon, when “they will cross the river on foot” with the coming of Moshiach.

When it says in chapter 5 Pirkei Avos, “Ten miracles were performed for our ancestors in Egypt,” it’s not just something that happened in the past (“what was, was”), rather, it is relevant practically for every day (like every Mishna – a halachic ruling). Our Sages said, “All the kingdoms are called by the name Egypt (Mitzrayim), because they oppress (metzirim) the Jewish people”; the very fact that “the city of G-d is demeaned etc.” and that a Jew prays that “the city be rebuilt on its former site,” is the greatest “Egypt” and “oppression of the Jewish people.” To this a Jew is told that he must be like “our ancestors in Egypt” – where “Ten miracles were performed for our ancestors in Egypt”! The norm for them, even while still in Egypt, was miracles – “ten miracles”! (And then after they left Egypt, there were another “ten at the sea” – miracles above miracles.) Similarly (and all the more so) in “Egypt” today (after the literal Exodus from Egypt and the giving of the Torah): in every situation, wherever a Jew turns and exercises any of his ten faculties, clothed in the three garments of thought, speech, and action – he is accustomed to and used to “ten miracles”! [To be continued.]

(1) Shelishi of Parashas Bechukosai states, “and I broke the pegs of your yoke and led you upright” – meaning the nullification of every kind of yoke, so that one can engage in Torah study to that extent that “Torah is his occupation,” like Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai. (2) The inner dimension of Torah explains how although the parashah seems to say negative things, “in truth, they are only blessings.” As the Tzemach Tzedek notes in Likkutei Torah, this is like the story of the Gemara in Moed Katan: Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai sent his son Rabbi Elazar to receive a blessing from two sages, but what they told him sounded like the opposite blessings. He told his father, “Not only did they not bless me, but they caused me pain,” but father explained that, “These are all blessings,” and explained how they were blessings etc. From this we can understand in our parashah, too, that “in truth they are only blessings,” and to the contrary, they are very lofty blessings, from the hidden levels of kindness, which is why they are expressed in language that appears like the opposite of blessing.

On the verse (in sheini of Parashas Bechukosai), “And I will grant peace in the land,” the Zohar states: “Peace of the land, peace of the home, peace of the world”: First there must be “peace of the land” - peace in the “land of desire” in every Jew, between the evil inclination and the good inclination (“‘And you shall love... with all your heart’ - with both of your inclinations”). And this brings “peace of the home,” peace in every Jewish home; following the Torah eliminates the strife that exists in the world between parents and children etc. And this brings “peace of the world”: every good deed of every Jew has the power to bring peace to the entire world, starting from “And I will grant peace in the Land” – Eretz Yisrael, which was given to every Jew as an eternal inheritance from the Eternal G-d! What place is there in “democracy” for a group of 12 or 20 people to decide, and afterwards for 120 people (including non-Jews) to approve it, to give away part of Eretz Yisrael without the permission of every one of the 13 million Jews everywhere?! Stealing the property of the Jewish people goes against democracy, against the Torah and against Hashem! The vessel for Hashem to “grant peace in the land” is acting according to the complete Torah etc.

The Midrash tells the story of a couple who had been married for ten years without having children, they came to Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai to get divorced. Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai told them, “Just as you were married with food and drink, so too, you shall not separate except with food and drink.” They went and made a great feast, at which the husband became intoxicated. “He said to her, ‘My daughter, see any valuable object that I have in the house, take it and go to your father’s house.’” After he fell asleep, she told her servants and maidservants to take him to her father's house. When he awoke and asked why he was there she replied, “There is no object in the world more valuable to me than you!” They went back to Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai who davened for them, and they were blessed with children. The Midrash states that this teaches you that “just as the Holy One, blessed be He, remembers the barren, so too, the righteous remember the barren.” This can be connected to the miracles known to occur by the Mitteler Rebbe on Lag B’Omer, primarily that of people being blessed with children. (In the spiritual sense – getting the parents and children to walk the same path together, the path of Hashem). And the Midrash concludes: “The Jewish people, who await the salvation of the Holy One, blessed be He, every day and say, ‘We have no valuable object in the world but You’ – all the more so” that Hashem fulfills their request. May it be His will that through our deeds and our service, especially the activities associated with “the day of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai’s joy” (and especially the activities done with children), we will merit to see it very soon with our physical eyes.

At the end of Parashas Behar, on the verse, “You shall not make idols for yourselves,” Rashi states: “This is addressed to the one who has been sold to a gentile, that he should not say, “(1) Since my master engages in illicit relations, I will also be like him; (2) since my master serves idols, I will also be like him; (3) since my master desecrates the Shabbos, I will also be like him.” This is why these verses are stated [here].” However, in the Torah itself, the order is different: (1) “You shall not make idols for yourselves”; (2) “You shall keep My Shabbasos”; (3) “You shall fear My sanctuary” (“sanctity” connotes refraining from illicit relations). The reason Rashi changes the order is because “The Torah speaks of what is usual”: when cautioning the Jew who has been sold to a gentile not to learn from his master’s conduct, he does so following the order in which the Jew is most likely to learn from his master: first illicit relations, which involves a strong human desire etc., followed by idolatry, which is less “usual,” and then Shabbos, which comes only once a week. (But in the Torah itself, these are three different commands, so the idea of “speaking of what is usual” doesn’t apply.)
