    Synopsis

The Jewish custom is to involve the schoolchildren on Lag B’Omer. This is connected to the beginning of Parashas Behar, “When you come to the land, etc.”: schoolchildren are fully involved in Torah study – “Shabbos” – which emphasizes that first comes “the land shall rest a Shabbos to Hashem,” and only afterwards comes the “six years you shall sow your field, etc.” This is the place to further mention the importance of gathering the children in the days close to Lag B’Omer (in a permissible manner) to speak to them about Torah and about Lag B’Omer. Especially this year, when some people have done shocking things against Rashbi: it can be said that since we are approaching the coming of Moshiach, when there will be no more jealousy and competition, etc., and yet there are those who endeavor to seize the last moments of exile to increase hatred and division – this should inspire those who follow the way of Rashbi to remember that it depends on them to seize every moment and increase in spreading the wellsprings outward. And in this case – to see to it that all Jewish children rejoice in the joy of Rashbi!

    Synopsis

The mitzvah of Pesach Sheini came about through the initiative of Jews (leaders of the generation) who were unable to bring the Pesach Rishon and demanded, “why should we be excluded.” Seemingly, their demand is puzzling: if Hashem wanted them to perform a Korban Pesach, He would surely have commanded them to do so. And if Hashem didn’t command them to do so, seemingly that shows that it isn’t necessary. The answer is that although one must always “believe in Hashem and in Moshe His servant,” and do what Hashem says, however, when it comes to matters of fear of Heaven, when one feels he is lacking and it really bothers him – here he must demand what he is looking for, and not simply “rely…on our Father in Heaven.” This is a lesson for Jews of every level: the “simplest of the simple” might think, who am I to come and make demands of Hashem – but in the story of Pesach Sheini, Jews did come with a demand, and it was accepted, and through them a new mitzvah came about for all Jews. On the other hand, the “heads of your tribes” might think, what am I lacking that I should come and demand, ‘Why should we be excluded” – but the truth is that the very symbol of being a Torah scholar is the desire to constantly grow and advance from strength to strength.

    Synopsis

When the Beis Hamikdash stood and the Korban Pesach was brought physically, the Jewish people saw the advantage of Pesach Rishon over Pesach Sheini (because some aspects of the Pesach Rishon don’t apply to the Pesach Sheini). But in exile, even the Pesach Rishon happens in the spiritual sense. Therefore, Pesach Sheini nowadays doesn’t emphasize what Pesach Sheini lacks compared to Pesach Rishon; rather, the emphasis is only on the advantage of Pesach Sheini over Pesach Rishon. This teaches us that when the evil inclination tries to weaken our Torah and mitzvos in exile by arguing that we can’t fulfill them properly in exile anyway – the response is that “the advantage of light” comes “from the darkness” – it is specifically in exile that we can bring about the “advantage of light.” While it’ true that this “advantage of light” will be revealed only in the future, however, that light is caused by “our actions and our service” now in the time of exile. Moreover, even the revelation of it is possible for a Jew at every moment, because a Jew has the ability to bring Moshiach.

    Synopsis

[Continuation.] This also explains why the answer to the question “And if you should say, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year?’” is not that Hashem will provide “bread from heaven” just like in the desert. Because once “you enter the land,” one ma no longer “rely on a miracle”; rather, one must act by natural means. But Hashem promises that, “I will command My blessing in the sixth year,” within the cloak of nature itself, causing the produce to last for as long as needed. The vessel to merit Hashem’s blessing in the “sixth year” comes when one’s first decision upon entering the land is that this is a land (and a people) that belongs to Hashem – “and the land shall rest a Shabbos to Hashem.” Children should be educated in such a way that when the time comes for them to earn a livelihood (“entering the land”), they know that while the Torah requires making a vessel by natural means, the first decision one must take is that “all your deeds shall be for the sake of heaven”; in this way they will merit Hashem’s blessing. These two points – (1) that one must act via natural means, but (2) the action must be founded on the basis that “the earth and its fullness belong to Hashem” – also apply to the recent situation in Eretz Yisrael.

    Synopsis

The beginning of Parashas Behar states: “…When you come to the land…the land shall rest a Shabbos to Hashem. Six years you may sow your field….” The question is asked: why does the verse place “the land shall rest a Shabbos to Hashem” first, if the seventh year only comes after the “Six years you may sow etc.”? This teaches us a fundamental lesson regarding proper Jewish education (which is truly a matter of saving lives): Some parents say, “What will we eat’”?! – how will the child make a living when he grows up; they argue that even the Torah addresses this question (in Parashas Behar). The answer is that while this is indeed a valid question according to the Torah, because “One may not rely on a miracle,” and must earn a living via natural means (“And Hashem your G-d will bless you in all that you do”), nevertheless, one must know that the natural means is only a “vessel,” but it is the “blessing of Hashem that makes rich” – “I will command My blessing for you in the sixth year….” Therefore, the main focus of the child’s education and energy must be on following Hashem’s ways and keeping His Torah and mitzvos. In this way he will merit Hashem’s blessing; the focus must not be on the vessel.

    Synopsis

The Mishna states, “‘And Moshe told the Jewish people the appointed festivals of Hashem’ – the mitzvah is that they should read each one in its time.” On this the Gemara says: “Our Sages taught, Moshe enacted for the Jewish people that they should inquire and expound upon the laws of Pesach on Pesach, the laws of Shavuos on Shavuos, and the laws of Sukkos on Sukkos” (that is, in addition to the requirement to read from the Torah on each Yom Tov the verses in the Written Torah about that day, they must also expound upon the laws in the Oral Torah). The reason it doesn’t mention Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur here (although they, too, are mentioned in the passage upon which the law is based, “And Moshe told…”) can be understood from the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, where he writes the requirement of “inquiring and expounding upon the laws of Pesach before Pesach for thirty days” etc. is in order to learn the laws of the holiday (including the preparations for the holiday as well as the laws of the holiday itself), in contrast to the requirement of “inquiring and expounding on Pesach” itself., which is about “the theme of the day—the miracle that happened on that day.” Just that since the community is already being gathered to expound upon the miracles (on Yom Tov itself), the opportunity is used to once again review the laws. But on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur there is no requirement to gather the community because there is no miracle of the day upon which to expound (and there is no need to gather the community to discuss the laws, which they have already learned during the previous thirty days).

    Synopsis

It has happened recently that public funds that could have been invested in the Jewish education of thousands of Jewish children – a matter of life and death (spiritually, and perhaps also physically) – has been wasted on distancing Jews from the path of Torah and Halacha…. They establish committees to discuss matters of Torah and Halacha, while ensuring in advance what the decision will be (they do it via majority vote, to make it seem like it was properly deliberated etc.), and the decision is to make changes to the siddur, that in order to bring Jews “closer” to Yiddishkeit they should be encouraged to drive to shul on Shabbos, which involves biblical prohibitions. And for what – to hear the “rabbi” talk about politics and the like. I saw the text of one rabbi’s Rosh Hashana sermon; it discussed everything but matters of fear of heaven…when he asked me what I thought about the sermon I told him, even according to your own opinion – why did you base the sermon on non-Jewish books, when it says the same idea in the Written Torah? And what will he answer when his grandson asks – if his grandson ends up receiving a Jewish education – how he forgot a verse from the Tanakh?!

    Synopsis

“Interpreting the Torah not in accordance with the halacha” [Pirkei Avos ch. 3] results from a person being so “bribed” by his self-love that he is too ashamed to admit when he errs, and instead justifies himself by interpreting the Torah as though his actions were correct. When a person studies Torah as an afterthought, without passion, he cannot issue a halachic ruling at all, therefore, he also can’t “interpret the Torah not in accordance with the halachah.” As the Rebbe, my father-in-law, would say, in order to be an apikores, one must really know what it is he is denying…once can’t just be knaken semitchkes (“cracking sunflower seeds”) and be an apikores – that would be an am ha’aretz, not an apikores. To “interpret the Torah contrary to the halacha, one must learn diligently and acquire deep knowledge until he discerns its “face” etc. And this person who is motivated by personal considerations, toils in Torah, in order to issue rulings that defy the Shulchan Aruch! And to create the appearance that he isn’t just relying on his own authority, he establishes a “committee” with academics in medicine and history etc., people who are successful at “football” – who know how to get the ball into the goal with the left foot – they have “degrees” with no connection to halacha, and are paid thousands of dollars of public funds, and pressured to decide that “two plus two is five” – to say that something that goes against halacha is Judaism, G-d forbid.

    Synopsis

One of the things in whose merit the Jewish people left Egypt was that “they did not change their clothing.” Even in “Egypt,” one must “not change their clothing,” even if it is difficult, and this will cause the Jewish people to find favor in the eyes of the nations around them. The Torah also tells us that from the millions of Jews in the desert, only one fell into sin, Shlomis bas Divri, and it was the result of her being “very talkative,” meaning a lack of tznius in her speech. That is, tznius applies not only to one’s manner of dress, but also to one’s manner of speech. In the merit of tznius, Hashem will likewise take us out of this exile. Every Jew must unite with all Jews, especially those in Eretz Yisrael; may Hashem fulfill for them the verse “…you will lie down and no one will frighten” you, meaning, not only will no one harm them, rather, there won’t even be anyone to frighten them, because “Hashem is your Guardian.” This also requires tznius, as it says, “For Hashem your G-d walks in the midst of your camp to save you and to deliver your enemies before you,” because “He sees no unseemly matter in you etc.”

    Synopsis

[Continued.] These three stages mentioned earlier (joy, redemption, and mitzvah) also apply to spreading the wellsprings outward – “outward” in the literal sense (which is the call of the hour), as well as “outward” within oneself. Compared to the soul’s essence, the soul’s faculties are considered “outside.” Therefore, in order for a soul-faculty to operate properly, one must first bring it joy, by “telling it” that it is the means by which the “union of the Holy One blessed be He, and His Shechina” will come about etc. This joy “redeems” the soul-faculty from the sense that it has fallen from its higher level, after which comes the action itself – “mitzvah.” The same applies to spreading the wellsprings to others: first, one must give the other Jew the encouragement and joy that comes with the knowledge that he is an “actual portion of Hashem from above” etc. This then nullifies all boundaries and limitations (“redemption”), including the barriers between one Jew and another, because in truth, “they are all equal and they all have one father.” Then comes the main thing – action which brings about the bond and connection (“mitzvah”) to Hashem.
