    Synopsis

The themes of the months of Adar, Nissan, and Iyar respectively are joy, redemption, and the connection and bond forged through a mitzvah (as demonstrated by the fact that Sefiras Ha’Omer applies every single day of the month of Iyar, something we don’t find in any other mitzvah). Despite the tremendous quality of joy (“breaking through barriers”), true joy can only be experienced when one was first in an undesirable situation, and then “it was reversed.” This proves that there isn’t yet a state of true redemption, like the month of Adar, whose redemption is not complete because “We are still servants to Achashverosh.” Afterwards comes the month of redemption; true redemption is when the redemption is complete, like the Exodus from Egypt which, “had they merited,” would have been the true and complete Redemption. This is expressed in the fact that Tachanun is not recited throughout the entire month of Nissan, a semblance of the future era, when “I will remove the spirit of impurity from the earth.” Then comes the connection and bond with Hashem that results from a mitzvah; within this connection, one constantly advances from level to level within holiness itself. This is similar to the Divine service in the future era, when “I will remove the spirit of impurity etc.,” and to the command, “You shall be holy,” that is, constantly becoming holier, even though the Jewish people already became “a holy nation” when the Torah was given.

    Synopsis

A collection of stories about the Rebbe Maharash: (1) When the Rebbe Maharash’s teacher told his father, the Tzemach Tzedek, how well he was doing, his father replied, “Why are you surprised that Tiferes Sheb’Tiferes does well?” (2) The Chassidim once asked the Rebbe Maharash, who was six or seven years old at the time and in middle of playing, to provide the source for a certain Midrash the Tzemach Tzedek had cited in a maamar, and he answered them immediately. (3) The Rebbe Maharash lived an exceptionally wealthy lifestyle, with everything made of gold etc. After my grandfather’s wedding, he spent time as one of the “sitters” at the court of the Rebbe Maharash (unlike nowadays when young couples run off after the wedding to a “honeymoon,” subjecting themselves to numerous stumbling blocks etc.; would that this bad practice be abolished). When he returned from Lubavitch, someone asked him why the Rebbe Maharash lives so lavishly, when he could give the money to tzedakah etc.? He replied, “Fool, fool, for whom was the gold created?” Another story about the Rebbe Maharash’s lavish lifestyle: every morning his coachmen would drive him into the forest with a carriage harnessed to four or six horses etc. One day, the Chassidim got the coachman to divulge the “strange conduct” he observed on these daily trips: the Rebbe would sit under a tree and cry, with all the ants crawling on him etc. People might have thought it was a trip for leisure, but to the contrary, the Rebbe was afflicting himself.

Stories of the Rebbe Maharash: (1) Excerpt from sichah of Motza’ei Shabbos, Parashas Tazria-Metzora, 5739; (2) excerpt from sichah of 13 Nissan 5726; (3) excerpt from sichah of Purim 5728.

    Synopsis

Every day of the month of Iyar has a special mitzvah – Sefiras HaOmer – which involves a daily increase, “ascending in holiness.” The lesson is: every Jew must strive to increase in mitzvos, “ascending in holiness,” for example, a child devoting his free time to Torah study etc. This applies particularly to members of Tzivos Hashem, who wish to cause pleasure to Hashem, the “Commander-in-Chief.” And because Hashem’s attribute is “measure for measure,” Hashem will respond in kind, by giving increased blessing to the Jewish people etc.

    Synopsis

Despite the differences between Jews, they are all one – by virtue of the essence of their soul, which is “literally a part of G-d from above” and which for a Jew is primary. But this soul-unity must also be expressed openly in the soul’s specific faculties, as well as in the physical body. This is the meaning of the commandment to “love your fellow like yourself”: a Jew’s conduct in thought, speech, and action must embody Ahavas Yisroel, and to the degree that one loves his fellow Jew “like yourself,” because they are really all one being. As explained in Yerushalmi, all Jews are like limbs of a single body; the distinctions between one limb and another have no bearing on the fact that they are all part of the same body. This is emphasized by the fact that the blood, which “is the soul,” circulates throughout all the limbs. The mitzvah of Ahavas Yisroel is an instruction of the Torah of truth and the Torah of life – a guide for life, to the extent that Ahavas Yisroel is “the entire Torah,” and “the rest is its interpretation.” [And then a Jew is told:] “Go study.”Top of Form

    Synopsis

Today’s Rambam begins (Hilchos Shabbos, ch. 15): “A person may stand in a public domain and move [objects] throughout an entire private domain, and stand in a private domain and move [objects] within a public domain, provided that he does not carry beyond four cubits.” It can be said that this law expresses the basic idea of a Jew’s Divine service: “A person may stand in a public domain and move [objects] throughout an entire private domain”: A “person” (Adam – “similar to the Most High”) refers to the soul within the body, which is in a “public domain” – this physical world, the “world of separation.” His role there is (through his divine service) to “move” and bring about advancement in the “private domain” – of the Unique One of the World – entirely. As the Maggid taught, “Know what is above you” – everything above depends on and comes “from you.” Then the Rambam continues: [A person may] “stand in a private domain and move [objects] within a public domain, provided that he does not carry beyond four cubits”: at the very beginning of one’s divine service in this world – which is a tremendous descent for the soul – he has the “reward,” meaning, even as a soul in a body in this world – he “stands in the private domain” and has the ability to influence the public domain etc. Just that since Moshiach hasn’t yet come, and the world hasn’t yet been completely refined, there is still the condition that he must not “carry beyond four cubits,” that is, beyond the boundary of holiness etc.

The verse states, “…Kedoshim tihyu ki Kadosh Ani…” (“You shall be holy, for I am holy”). The word Kedoshim (in the plural) refers to the holiness of the soul and the holiness of the soul, and the Jew’s holiness results from Hashem’s holiness – “for I am holy.” Therefore, just as Hashem’s holiness is unchanging and unaffected by time and place etc., so, too, the holiness of the Jewish people cannot be diminished or weakened. Moreover, since Hashem’s holiness is infinite, that quality is also expressed in the holiness of the Jewish people: not only is not diminished, rather, they “ascend in holiness,” constantly increasing without limit, “from strength to strength.”

    Synopsis

At the end of Masechta Yoma, the Mishnah cites the verse “The mikveh of the Jewish people is Hashem,” and says, “Just as a mikveh purifies the impure, so does the Holy One, Blessed be He, purify the Jewish people.” A person might say, he doesn’t believe that Hashem Himself deals with purifying the impure – i.e. someone who has transgressed His will. Seemingly it would be more fitting for Hashem to send a messenger, an angel, an navi, a rabbi to do it, rather than do it Himself?! But a mikveh proves Hashem does so Himself: the mikveh purifies the impure, and no matter how many impure people immerse in it, it remains pure, precisely because it is the one thing in the world that is entirely unsusceptible to impurity at all, and cannot become impure. (In spiritual terms: the Torah cannot become impure). Similarly, it is precisely Hashem Himself, the one perfect being, Who cannot become impure – Who can deal with purifying the impure.

    Synopsis

“Wisdom” (unmoored from practical deed) can be found even among the nations, but “Torah” comes only from Sinai. Because to get a person to forego his own honor, jealousy, and desires etc. – is impossible unless built on the foundation of fulfilling the will of the Creator and Ruler of the world. This is especially proven in our generation, the nation which boasted of being the most advanced in wisdom, science, philosophy and morality etc. – stooped to the most horrifying evil. This is also why Pirkei Avos, which is about ethics and positive traits, begins with “Moshe received the Torah from Sinai.” Because that is the only guarantee for just and upright conduct with regards to oneself and others. The Mishna continues, “Raise many students.” “Many” means that not even one Jew remains unreached; similarly, we must influence the nations of the world as well. And “Words spoken from the heart enter the heart and have their effect,” allowing one to see “good fruits from his labor.”

    Synopsis

Seemingly, what is the point of counting days during Sefiras HaOmer [as described in the fourth Aliyah of Emor]? The point of the Omer is to remember the Omer offering (“to the Omer”), and if one fails to count a day, he loses that day. This teaches us a wondrous lesson about the importance of valuing time: every moment a person is given is for a specific purpose – to give the moment true meaning by using it to fulfill his Divine mission for that moment. If a moment passes without being properly filled with meaning, he not only loses the deed he could have done at that moment, rather, he also loses the very moment itself. It says that Avraham Avinu was “coming in days,” meaning, his days were complete, filled with true meaning. This ability is given to every Jew as an inheritance, to fill every moment of the day with true meaning.
