    Synopsis

The emphasis during the second days of Pesach is on the coming Redemption, as seen in the Haftoros of the second days as well as in the Torah reading of the seventh day of Pesach – the song of Az yashir etc. Therefore, one should increase in positive deeds during the last days of Pesach, even more so than during the first days, especially activities involving Jewish children, because [at Kerias Yam Suf, which took place] on the seventh day of Pesach, “They recognized Him first.” The idea that “They recognized Him first” applies to all Jewish children in every time and place, and they also influence their parents – “He will turn the hearts of the fathers to [Hashem, through] the children.”

    Synopsis

Pesach is called Chag Hamatzos; the difference between chametz and matzah is that chametz rises, whereas matzah is guarded so that it doesn’t rise. In terms of divine service: chametz represents haughtiness and arrogance, and matzah represents humility and bittul. A Jew must behave like “matzah” – with bittul and humility. Every member of Tzivos Hashem, who has merited to be in the army whose Commander-in-Chief is Hashem, must make sure that despite having this great privilege and quality, he doesn’t let it lead to arrogance, chas v’shalom, but rather that it gives him strength for fulfilling Hashem’s instructions.

    Synopsis

Since the Torah of Truth demands that “Every single day a person is obligated to view himself as though he went out from Egypt,” it is understood that the Exodus occurs every single day. Being that the Exodus involved open miracles, this means that a person experiences miracles every day, and when he contemplates this, he will see it. Sometimes open miracles, sometimes open displays of Hashgacha Pratis, and sometimes miracles clothed in the ways of nature; indeed, a Jew’s livelihood is entirely miraculous (just that it is clothed in nature). In this vein, the Gemara tells the story of Rav Hamnuna, who would daven to Hashem for food even when he already had food on his table. This is also the significance of the brachos made before eating food – the brachah places the food in the person’s domain, giving him permission to enjoy it. And there is no greater miracle than this: that by asking the King of Kings, the Holy One, blessed be He for food, one is immediately given food that belongs to him.

    Synopsis

Today is Erev Pesach, the “first of the festivals”; it is the time of the final preparations for the holiday, including the Korban Pesach and the mitzvah to obliterate chametz. Today is also the Rambam’s birthday (and notably, we don’t know the birthdays of most great Jewish leaders), and therefore it’s an opportunity to once again emphasize the study of the daily Rambam. It is also an opportunity to encourage more study of the teachings of the Tzemach Tzedek, whose yom hilulah is on 13 Nissan, and the efforts toward providing every Jew with all their holiday needs, in such a way that everything is “placed before you.” May it be Hashem’s will that we merit the true and complete Redemption immediately, and go “with heavenly clouds” to our Holy Land, “and eat there from the sacrifices and from the Pesach sacrifices.”

    Synopsis

    (1) In the times of the Tzemach Tzedek, it was considered obvious that “In those days, Yehudah would be saved,” because he was the third nasi, the sefirah of Da’as, which encompasses everything etc. (2) One should not be satisfied with merely “awaiting” Moshiach’s coming; rather, it must actually happen – that when wakes up in the morning he will find Moshiach standing in his room, and he will be in a state fitting for greeting Moshiach Tzidkeinu. And since “He asks only according to their ability,” surely “Hashem helps him,” and this applies to every Jew. (3) The Tzemach Tzedek devoted himself with mesiras-nefesh to the plight of Jewish children who attended the government schools, as well as that of the Cantonists, children who were torn away from Yiddishkeit at a young age, etc. The lesson is that we must likewise get involved with the plight of such children, and bring them in to “Tzivos Hashem.”

    Synopsis

On the verse [in revi’i of Parashas Metzora, regarding tzara’as on houses], “The kohen shall order that they clear out the house…so that everything in the house should not become unclean,” Rashi states: “For what objects did the Torah have consideration? If it was upon [metal] vessels, let him immerse them, and they will become clean…Hence, the Torah has consideration only for earthenware vessels, which cannot be cleansed in a mikvah.” From here we see the preciousness and importance of a Jew’s physical objects, even something of very little value like earthenware vessels, and even when it belongs to a Jew whose level is such that there’s a possibility that he deserves tzara’as, a particularly severe form of impurity requiring one to “live alone; outside the camp.” This can be tied to the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu: Moshiach is called “afflicted, as it is written, ‘But he was pained because of our transgressions, etc.’” and additionally, the Redemption will be in a manner of “their silver and their gold with them.”

    Synopsis

A person must utilize the abilities Hashem gives him for the benefit of the entire world, as it says, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and conquer it,” beginning with the mitzvah of “be fruitful and multiple” in the literal sense. As to those who are concerned about livelihood and expenses etc. – the Torah says that every Jew is a “full world” like Adam Harishon, who “was created on Erev Shabbos…in order that he enter into a feast immediately,” with everything prepared for him. When a child is born, his sustenance is born with him. Parents must educate their children in such a way that they, too, will “conquer” the materiality of the world and utilize it for holiness. Jewish education is connected to the Exodus from Egypt, which was the birth of the Jewish nation. Just like the “education” of the Jewish people began immediately at “birth” (“When you bring this people out of Egypt, you shall serve G-d etc.”), so, too, a child’s Jewish education begins long before the formal age of chinuch; it begins immediately upon birth (and even before that), because already then, a child absorbs everything they see and hear.

    Synopsis

Yechezkel describes the Exodus from Egypt as the birth of the Jewish people as a nation, which indicates the centrality to Pesach of Jewish education (which begins even before the child’s formal education, by establishing an atmosphere in the home of Torah and mitzvos etc.). Therefore, the Seder is designed for the children (“And you shall tell your son…”; “The Torah speaks of four sons…”). Just as the physical aspects of the Seder require preparation before Pesach, so, too, the spiritual aspects. We’ve discussed many times the importance and necessity of providing Jewish children with a proper Jewish education; unfortunately there are tens of thousands of Jewish children who are educated in secular schools; until such time as their parents can be persuaded to transfer them to schools offering a Jewish education – effort should at least be made that public schools should begin the day with a moment of silence, during which the child can reflect on the Creator and Ruler of the world – this is the foundation of education, and it will continue to affect the child “even when he grows old.”
