Do you need to crunch until you pass out to get nicely developed abs? Not necessarily. Here we get into the details of WHAT is actually going on inside your body. There are different aspects of your "core" region that are largely mis-understood by the masses. It is not as simple as just going to the gym and doing a few sit-ups. Nor can you spot-reduce fat in any area of the body, ESPECIALLY the abdominal region.
There are movement muscles of the core as well as stabilizer muscles of the core. The rectus abdominis (six-pack muscle) is the classic movement muscle providing flexion of the spine, while the Transverse Abdominis (TVA) is the main stabilizer, providing a 'drawing-in' effect with the stomach giving the lower back integrity and stabilization.
Both of these major muscles are important, but most people get distracted and focus on one or the other too much. In essence, every muscle in the body is important and plays a role (this is why we have them, lol). The key is to know HOW to train them and what purpose you are actually training them for.
