  • Deception vs Integrity | BMS | EP 072

Whether it's cars, boob jobs, or hair extensions, trust is HUGE when it comes to both consumers and professionals. Join Danielle & Ani as they have a spicy conversation on this hot topic in this week’s episode of the Big Money Stylist.

For Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week’s Episode…..POWER Point #1: Pretty Little Liars
    • No matter what you are purchasing, as a consumer, you put your trust in the professional to provide what they say they will be providing.
    • There are artists playing the game of bait & switch, luring clients under the guise of providing NBR, yet providing anything but that.
    QUESTION

What has been your experience with this, either as one who was baited or the one setting the bait?

Point #2: “Oh, I Just Do Hair”
    • Many artists come to BMS because they’re sick and tired of being looked at like a fucking joke, a common problem in the hair industry.
    • If you want to be taken seriously, though, you have to take yourself seriously. That comes through constant practice and proper education.
    QUESTION

What can you do to improve the way you view yourself?

Point #3: Tracking the Right Numbers
    • When it comes to marketing and social media, you might have a huge following, but what are your actual numbers when it comes to income?
    • Ani: I had less than 1500 followers and was making $20k per month. Anything can be done with proper marketing and advertising.
    QUESTION

Are you running the same shit show and just gaining popularity without filling up your bank account?

    Point #4: Stay In Integrity
    • Whatever service or product you’re offering, you must stay in integrity.
    • Danielle: Sadly, we’re at that point where people will say anything to get people in the door.
    QUESTION

What are you doing & saying to get people in the door and in your chair?

    Point #5: Consistency
    • Danielle & Ani hold the vision of the brand going international, and with that, the integrity of the brand must remain intact.
    • Because NBR is a very specific niche inside of the hair extension world, they are currently creating a manual with very specific verbiage and how-to’s for their trainers, thus assuring consistency within the brand internationally.
    QUESTION

Where inside your world as an artist would consistency benefit you or your salon?

    Quote of the Week:

“If you find yourself being triggered by a client or experience, ask yourself what part you played in feeling this way. What could you do to make sure this doesn’t happen again?”

    — Danielle K White

“I’m going to have you consider that one crazy client every rare moment… you met a crazy client. But, if you feel like you have crazy clients all the time, you might be the crazy one!

    —Anianne Rivera

How do you respond to feedback, especially when it isn’t in the form of praise? Are you able to give feedback, or is your typical response, “Oh, it’s fine,” when in reality it isn’t? Danielle and Ani have a lively conversation in this week’s episode about these and other similar topics, offering suggestions and tips from their own lives to illustrate their points.

For Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week’s Episode…..PROTECTION Point #1: Give & Take
    • Anytime make a decision, you’re going to receive feedback. Feedback can be a very beautiful thing and can come to you in the form of praise. It can also come in the form of persecution. Either way, you must be able to take a step back, be open to it, and ask yourself, “What is the lesson?”
    • When you are open to constructive feedback that can serve you, things will improve and you will progress. The same holds true with being the one givingconstructive feedback and having the courage to give it when necessary.
    QUESTION

When you receive feedback, what is your normal go-to action? Do you defend and blame, or are you open to asking yourself, “What is the lesson?”

    Point #2: Oh, It’s Fine
    • How often do we tell others, “Oh, it’s fine” when it really isn’t because we don’t want to complain or ‘rock the boat?’ All of those ‘oh, it’s fine’ moments stack on top of each other until you finally blow. And, guess what? It’s your fault.
    • Ani: You can’t be upset with your clients for coming in on a Saturday when you allow them to come in on a Saturday. You can’t be mad at someone else for the choices and decision you make.
    QUESTION

How often do you use the phrase, “Oh, it’s fine” when you know that isn’t the truth?

    Point #3: Poking Holes
    • null
    • Whenever you make a life-altering decision, people are going to express an opinion…whether solicited or not. When they come at you with that ‘poke hole’ mentality, it will test how strong & confident you are in your convictions.
    • It will either push you forward OR you’re going to let it get to your head and you will begin questioning your decision, putting yourself in a weakened, wishy-washy condition. Don’t go about making decisions with one foot in and one foot out.
    QUESTION

Where do you currently have one foot in and one foot out? What can you do to change that?

    Point #4: Fear & Faith
    • You’re always going to be afraid of trying something new and leaving what was comfortable behind. There will always be a fear attached to what could happen. There’s also a HUGE fear attached to failure and the fear of sucking & embarrassing yourself.
    • When you make a decision to do something, you have to be confident in that decision. Yes, you’re going to be afraid. Yes, you may be a little unsure of what the hell you’re doing…and that’s ok. What you must have, no matter what, is faith: more faith in yourself than you have fear.
    QUESTION

Where in your world are you letting the fear of the unknown keep you in a situation that has become way too comfortable for you?

    Point #5: Feedback
    • Danielle: If you can’t take feedback, you can only get so good at doing your job behind the chair as an Artist. A lot of Artists will take feedback as an attack, or they will be embarrassed and get defensive.
    • You have to be able to take feedback, even if you feel it’s from a nut case, and ask yourself where you could have improved. Approaching it with neutral energy instead of a defensive attitude will make all the difference.
    QUESTION

How do you receive feedback as an Artist? What can you do to improve how you receive it?

    Quote of the Week:

“I’m going to challenge all of you to stop putting one foot in the door, and instead commit, make it happen, and then see what happens for you in your business and in your life.”

    — Danielle K White

“Anytime you’re making a huge life decision or a decision that’s ‘out of the norm,’  you’re either going to hear praise or persecution. You just need to be confident in what you’re doing and have more faith in yourself than you have fear in the “what-if’s” of failure.

  • Stepping Into the Unknown | BMS | EP 070
In this week’s episode, Danielle and Ani have a conversation about taking a leap into the unknown. How unhappy are you willing to let yourself be? Do you honestly want to keep doing the same shit that you’ve always done and keep being unhappy OR do you want to say fuck it, do something different and get a different result?
    37 min
  • Stepping Into the Unknown | BMS | EP 070

In this week’s episode, Danielle and Ani have a conversation about taking a leap into the unknown. How unhappy are you willing to let yourself be? Do you honestly want to keep doing the same shit that you’ve always done and keep being unhappy OR do you want to say fuck it, do something different and get a different result?

In This Week’s Episode…..POWER Point #1: Born to Leap!
    • Why are we so scared to step into the unknown even when we’re already in a scary or uncomfortable place? We’ll take so much pain before we let go and step into the unknown. We’re built to survive, so jumping into the unknown is how we can give ourselves -and human nature – more credit.
    • When you take that leap, you’re not just going to lay down and die; rather you’re going to fight to succeed. It’s crazy, though, how many years people will hold themselves hostage to situations that they don’t want to be in and where shit hasn’t changed for years.
    QUESTION

Where in your world do you know it’s time to take a leap, but your fear has paralyzed you?

    Point #2: But…What Happens If I Leave?
    • When it comes to artists, there are so many who continue working at a salon even though they absolutely hate everything about it – the vibe, the aesthetics, the owner – and they know that they should leave. But then they question what will happen if they do leave?
    • There are situations where you might have to take a step back before you take a step forward which can also scare people from ultimately taking that leap forward. We begin listening to the voices in our head that are saying things like, “Why would you let go of that security?” But if you’re unhappy, in feeling safe, it’s costing you so much more
    QUESTION

How do you respond to the voices in your head?

    Point #3: You Got This!
    • Anytime you decide to take a leap into the unknown, most likely you’re going to experience feelings of fear and anxiety, and it can be really stressful. The decision to move forward doesn’t always come easily.
    • When Danielle finds herself in situations where she feels almost beaten down – and physically & emotionally exhausted – a higher power will come to her with the message, “You got this!
    QUESTION

How have you experienced this in your life?

Point #4: One Foot In, One Foot Out
    • Many artists aren’t able to make the commitment and take the leap. They hang on to what’s comfortable or have a hard time letting go and end up keeping one toe in the water, even sometimes holding down two to three jobs because they’re unable to let go completely.
    • Ani has been one to jump off the cliff and just go for it, which is one of the reasons why she is able to learn and grow so quickly. “I’m one of those people who will have 500 questions about something to make sure I have everything correct in my head before I commit to something.” And then she takes the leap.
    QUESTION

Where do you currently have one foot in and one foot out?

Point #5: One Moment of Bravery
    • Ani: Sometimes all we need is one moment of bravery – a fuck it moment. That could mean taking five minutes to write your letter of resignation from a job that you fucking hate or a salon you don’t want to be at. It literally only takes one moment of bravery to hit the send button.
    • Danielle: I think the older we get, the more set in our ways we are. It’s even harder if you’re married or if you have children where there’s more riding on the line. We seem to stop taking risks as adults and think we have too much to lose, But in reality, we have too much to lose by NOT taking the leap
    QUESTION

Where in your world do you know that by taking one moment of bravery it would shift the course of your life?

    Quote of the Week:

“Assess the cliff. How much time do you have before you actually jump off the cliff? Are there some steps you can take that would make that jump seem safer?”

    — Danielle K White

“Don’t be reactive, be proactive. Don’t just wait for something to happen to you; make moves beforehand. Life does not have to happen to you; you can create whatever it is you want in life.”

    —Anianne Rivera

  • You Get What You Tolerate | BMS | EP 069

While in Vegas for the weekend celebrating Danielle's 36th birthday, Garrett & Danielle have a conversation around this topic of toleration & standards and discuss ways in which you, as an artist, can raise your standards.

For Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week's Episode…..PROTECTION Point #1: Tolerating Bullshit
    • Toleration is what you accept to be as true. The challenge of being a business owner or hair stylist is that most of us have been taught, trained and educated to tolerate a whole bunch of shit that doesn't make any sense, things like working 14-hour days, six days a week.

    • Your bank account is a reflection of your skillsets & mindsets as a business owner and as an artist. Consider that you are not setting yourself up to the standard of what your artwork could be because you're not doing what you really want to do. Instead, you're settling.
    QUESTION

As you step back and take a look inside your business, what bullshit are you tolerating that you must stop?

Point #2: The Artist is the Prize
    • Danielle holds herself to a very high standard as she paves the way for and leads artists. "I have very little tolerance. I'm very professional and, as the expert, I do not allow clients to dictate to me how I do their hair. As a result, clients trust me."

    • It all comes down to trusting yourself and not feeling awkward and weird about the experience with your client, and not thinking that you have to please them. There's always this balance between making the client happy and creating conditions in which you, as the artist, win, while delivering your art at the most amazing level.
    QUESTION

How do you see this spilling over into your personal life?

Point #3: What Are You Tolerating?
    • Tolerating means there is something going on that you don't like or necessarily agree with but that you're not doing anything about and not confronting. Most artists tolerate conditions or people because they don't want to collide with anyone.

    • Consider that your bank account and your business are a reflection of the level of tolerance that you have for the behavior and the results, both in your salon and for yourself, and that the reason you tolerate so much bullshit is because you hate the idea and the action of collision.
    QUESTION

What are you costing yourself by not doing the things you know you need to do?

    Point #4: What's Your Value?
    • You tolerate what your standards are. When you let your standards slide, then what you tolerate slides. This comes back to the value or lack of value that you place on yourself. When you lack value in yourself, you will tolerate high levels of bullshit because the level they tolerate is equal to the standard that they hold.

    • What happens inside of this is, the artists get angry at other artists who have chosen to not tolerate, who have chosen to raise their standards, and who expect & demand more out of their business and out of their life.
    QUESTION

What exactly are your standards? What could you be missing out on by not holding yourself to a higher standard?

    Point #5: Raise Your Standards
    • If you don't hold the standard that spending time with your spouse is important while building your salon business, then you may tolerate all kinds of clients whose business takes hours of your time in exchange for pennies.

    • Danielle: I believe we hold ourselves hostage by what we believe is possible for us. The industry standard is that we work 24/7. What about setting your own standard regarding how much and how often you're going to work?
    QUESTION

What is one thing you could change this week that would raise your standards?

    Quote of the Week:

"In order to change what you're actually tolerating, you have to raise your standards, which means the first collision that you're going to have is not with your client, it's with yourself."

    — Garrett J White

"We create stories in our mind of what's possible based upon our tolerance and our standards."

    –Danielle K White

In this week's episode, Danielle & Ani share their insights on what it means to bring power that helps and power that hinders success within the salon. *This is an encore presentation of a previously aired episode from 2018.

For Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week’s Episode…..POWER Point #1: Belief in Yourself Behind and in Front of the Chair
    • Danielle: Having a niche, owning your niche, and being good at your craft creates power. The belief you have about yourself has an impact on your ability to produce. When I began my career in a small, rural town in Arizona, I believed there was a cap on my earning potential until I had one of those light bulb moments that created a shift within me. When I gained my power and realized the power of marketing, my business began to explode.

    • Ani: Most stylists are stuck in the box of what they believe they can and can’t charge based on where they live and what everyone else is charging. It just takes one person finding their power and saying, “Fuck these rules, I’m not doing this! I’m going to make it up as I go because it doesn’t matter!” that leads the way for others to do the same.
    QUESTION

Do you currently have limiting beliefs surrounding your income limitations or capabilities? What are they?

Point #2: It’s an Inside Job
    • Everything begins with a shift and story inside of you which oft times won’t happen until you’re mirrored back a new reality by individuals around you who show you what could be possible. This is exactly what the Big Money Stylist experience is and what the NBR tribe is all about.

    • Ani’s inspiring ‘sink-or-swim-no-means-yes’ BMS journey and how she chose to make massive moves in her business is an example of making moves that first begin inside your head. One by one, she began letting go of the stories that were telling her, “You’re supposed to take on all clients and offer all services…you’re supposed to do everything!”
    QUESTION

Who do you believe yourself to be? Who must you become in order to be, do, and have what you want?

    Point #3: The Toleration Game
    • Your life and your business are a result of what you choose to tolerate. There’s a toleration game within stylists that paints the reality of how they treat themselves, what they have determined is the ‘right’ thing to do, what they have decided is the accepted modus operandi, and what is ‘artistically correct.’

    • So many stylists get stuck in the sacrifice game in the name of making money. Your power is obtained by what you’re committed to and drained from what you tolerate. Your life cannot become more than you tolerate.
    QUESTION

What are some ways you are stuck in the Sacrifice Game by playing the Toleration Game?

    Point #4: Reversing the Frame
    • The entire industry has been built to teach stylists to go to this place of powerlessness. The highest form of dysfunction inside the game of being an artist is where you don’t listen to your own voice anymore; where the client begins dictating your direction.

    • Ani used to be at the beck and call of her clients until she reversed the frame and began seeing herself as the prize. She took control of who she allowed to sit in her chair by setting up an in-depth application process, which garnered greater respect from her clients as well as assisted in creating a thriving business environment on her terms. The empowerment she felt and experienced in her business bled into all aspects of her personal life.
    QUESTION

Where in your business will reversing the frame change the game for you?

Point #5: Create a Life That Actually Matters to You
    • There are things you are tolerating that need to become intolerable to you. At the top of Ani’s list of intolerable’s: 1-tardiness and 2- being on call for your clients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

    • What are the results in finding your own power and letting go of bullshit? Turnarounds, breakthroughs, explosive business success, and peace & calm in your life. Create a game and creation inside your artistic place that not only pays you what you’re worth but lets you enjoy your life outside of what you do in the business.
    QUESTION

What are the top five things (behaviors, obstacles) you are tolerating inside your business, both in front of and behind your chair, that if you no longer tolerated, would cause your business to completely explode?

    Quote of the Week:

“I would get to this place of burnout and say, ‘No, I don’t want to be there; I don’t want to do that!’ I love hair, and I love being in the game… but I’m going to set my own rules and create my own path.”

    — Danielle K White

“I haven’t sacrificed shit, I’ve just let go of things that don’t work.”
