  • Invest In Your Business | BMS | EP 061

As trailblazers in the hair industry, the White’s are shattering the status quo and are setting new standards with their fresh ideas, proving that if you want to make an impact inside your industry, you can’t go with what’s already been done. This week’s topic? The importance of investing in yourself AND in your business.

In Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week’s Episode…..PROFIT Point #1: Mom Side Job?
    • A lot of women go into hair believing it to be a great mom side job where they’re able to create their own schedule, be their own boss, and make good money, which is exactly what Danielle believed. While artists learn the “how to’s” of doing hair, no business skills are taught at hair school.
    • Not being business savvy, most find themselves “thrown out into the world” to fend for themselves and end up giving away a lot more of their time than they realize, which ends up taking time away from their children – the very reason they went into hair in the first place!
    QUESTION

What was the reason you entered the world of hair?

    Point #2: Invest In Yourself
    • Danielle wanted to give her clients a world-class experience but was unwilling to invest herself, in the business, or in her education. “I don’t think I valued myself enough to where I had a price-point where I thought I had leeway to invest in my business.”
    • Garrett: Human beings operate in this really ridiculous way when it comes to business. We expect others to invest in us, yet we aren’t willing to invest in them. Part of the psychology and shift that had to take place with Danielle and the artists that we train was the willingness to invest in themselves.
    QUESTION

What do you do to invest in yourself on a regular basis?

Point #3: NBR Is a Feeling, Not a Function
    • “If you have shitty hair extensions, most likely, you’re going to feel even more self-conscious about your extensions, worrying about how they look and wondering if they’re hanging out and showing. But if you have good, customized extensions, you’re going to feel like a rock star.”
    • “As I was creating NBR, one of my goals was to not only have my clients look good in the initial before and after photo, I wanted them to carry the confidence as if theywere growing the hair out of their own heads!”
    QUESTION

Why did you initially seek out NBR hair extensions?

Point #4: Invest In Your Business
    • Over time, as her business started to grow, Danielle got to the point where she was wearing one too many hats and realized she could no longer do everything on her own. This led her to begin investing in herself by hiring others on her team.
    • She learned that in handing things off to others, it actually made her look like more of a professional, attracting a different type of clientele, which made it easier to ask for the price point she was looking for. “It’s cool to have an understanding of how it all works, but you’ve got to realize that not every little thing is going to be your specialty.”
    QUESTION

When are you going to begin investing in your business?

Point #5: Addicted to Certification, Not Results
    • Garrett: There are a lot of artists who hunt down the certification game. Although they continue to get certified, they continue to be shitty and nothing changes inside of their hair business. They’re addicted to certification, not results.
    • Inside of BMS, we pumped the brakes to assure the quality of the artist AND the quality of the art. If you want a result, then you’ll double-down. You’ll double-down on yourself, on your family, and on your future.
    QUESTION

Where in your world do you know you need to start doubling-down?

    Quote of the Week:

“The minute you flip the switch and recognize that doubling down with time, energy and money on you – and then being willing to do the work required to get results – is the path to getting a life that works. There is nobody that can give you this.”

    –Garrett J White

“You want a leg up in the game? Become a fucking marketer. You’ve got to learn how to represent your work the way you really feel like it is. Stop telling people how good you are, show them!”

    –Danielle K White

  • The Game of Results | BMS | EP 060

Admittedly different than most in the hair industry, the dynamic duo of Danielle K and Garrett J White bring a little spice to the table, a different flavor to the mix, and together, with their artists, deliver up BIG results. They're turning the world of hair upside down and couldn't be happier about it.

In Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week's Episode…..PRODUCTION Point #1: Slave Behind the Chair
    • With his background as a PE teacher, many have questioned Garrett's involvement in the hair industry. Yet, when you're married to an artist as he has been for the past 15 years, you see first hand the challenges the hair industry presents.
    • Garrett recognized that even if an artist becomes world class in their artistry and abilities, they remain chained to the chair due to their lack of business know-how, which is NOT taught in hair school.
    QUESTION

What have you been led to pursue even though it was out of your scope of study or training?

    Point #2: What's Driving You?
    • After Danielle finished hair school, she wanted to find a solution to her "crappy hair," which began her journey into the world of hair extensions. Along the way, she had to figure out how to be a better businesswoman.
    • What drove Danielle, in the beginning, was her passion for hair and problem-solving. She attributes her business success to loving what she does, sharing it with others, and delivering up great results in the form of transformation.
    QUESTION

What is the driving force behind your success?

Point #3: Addicted to the Craft
    • When artists step back and take a good look at the big picture, more often than not, they realize they're not making as much money as they thought they were. In many cases, they're quite shocked by the reality of their situation the facts and numbers are painting.
    • Danielle: I realized, like most artists, that I was working a ton and wearing myself out. I was not detail-oriented nor was I doing my numbers. I was, however, addicted to the craft, to the transformation, to the money.
    QUESTION

Where in your world are you running yourself into the ground because of your addiction to the money, the results, or the craft?

    Point #4: Raising the Bar
    • The changes inside of BMS in 2019 are results-driven; they're creating an environment of elite artists with sustaining and lasting results who are dominating in the hair game.
    • The Road to BMSCON4 in November 2019 has benchmarks along the way that every artist MUST complete in order to attend, including six months of training and pre-requisites, as well as a financial commitment. "Gone are the days of going home with another piece of paper that you can hang on your mirror and nothing happens."
    QUESTION

How are you leveling up your game?

Point #5: The 7 Problems Artists Face
    • Garrett: In the beginning we launched NBR training but then we saw a bigger problem: it's one thing to learn the NBR method, it's another thing to build a business that works and ultimately fulfills the three pillars of BMS: work less, make more, love your life.
    • Each of the 7 Problems that Garrett identifies has an opposite to it, which is what their students are experiencing inside of BMS. "The game I play is results. That's it. The real commitment is assuring our students have a shot to get results."
    QUESTION

As you step back and take a look at your life, what are your results? What actions are you willing to take if you're not happy with the results?

    Quote of the Week:

"Most artists are completely and utterly stuck in a rut. The only difference between a rut and a grave are the dimensions."

    –Garrett J White

"The more business savvy we become, the more we can love the art and the hair; the more we can create that balance and lifestyle that we're looking for, which is ultimately how to win in this game."

  • The Art of Editing & Filtering | BMS | EP 059

This week’s conversation turns to the all-important topic of marketing, namely editing and filtering Before and After photos. How much is too much? What about lighting? Should you even edit your photos? Danielle and Ani take on these questions and more in this week’s episode which will have you laughing one minute and taking serious notes the next. As always, they’re keeping it real with the Big Money Stylist Podcast.

In Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week’s Episode…..POWER Point #1: Before and After Photos
    • When taking Before and After photos, the goal is to deliver good work to the clients and to keep realistic expectations. If you’re going to do any kind of editing, just make sure it represents your work and what you can fulfill and deliver, and what it actually looks like in person.
    • Ani: When you edit a client’s face, it’s not because you think they’re ugly or they don’t look good enough; it’s a way to make them feel better. It’s not to take away from who they are or their natural beauty, it’s to make them feel comfortable with having their photo taken.
    QUESTION

How have you mastered the art of the Before and After photo?

Point #2: Why Are You Editing?
    • Ani: Some people use the editing app to correct the mistakes they have made while doing someone’s hair. We’re editing to get capture the look on film that we’re seeing in person. Lighting is hard, taking pictures is really hard, and depending on the time of day, the lighting can change.
    • Danielle: Nobody knows how good you are unless you show them. Part of the process of marketing is getting really good at taking photos so you can show your work to others and have it look as good as it does in person.
    QUESTION

How are your photo-taking and editing skills?

    Point #3: Feedback
    • Danielle: You have to give yourself honest feedback, and you can’t blame everythingthat doesn’t look good in the photo on the lighting. If you are able to give yourself honest feedback, you will become a better artist.
    • Stop judging everybody else’s work and wondering if they’re filtering or not filtering it. Just constantly rate your own work and ask yourself, “How can I learn and grow as an artist?” As you give yourself feedback, be sure to put it in the client’s notes.
    QUESTION

How has giving yourself honest feedback made you a better Artist?

    Point #4: Showcasing Your Work
    • Ani: As hairstylists, we post our work which can be both good AND bad. When posting work you can tell what looks legit as opposed to what has been filtered 15 times.
    • Danielle: As you showcase your work, great lighting is a must. The better the lighting you have, the less editing you’ll have to do because it actually does represent your work.
    QUESTION

Do you tend to use too many filters in your photos?

    Point #5: Keeping It Real
    • Ani: If you’re going to smoothe someone’s face, they shouldn’t actually look blurry. When I look at a photo and the face is all blurry, I know it’s been filtered way too much and it doesn’t look right.
    • Danielle: Don’t take away all the lines. If the face is too over-edited then people assume the hair is over edited as well. In my experience, if you have good lighting, the skin looks better. The point being, the more you learn how to use lighting, the less editing you’ll have to do and the more it will represent your work.
    QUESTION

Do you tend to blur the lines too much or do you keep it real?

    Quote of the Week:

“If I have a situation in business where shit goes sideways, I have to remind myself that I created the circumstances for this to happen, so it’s up to me to learn from it, grow from it, and then move on. Yes, that fucking sucks so let’s figure out how we’re going to do it better next time.”

    –Danielle K White

“Remember, editing is fine if you’re doing it to represent how your work truly looked in person. If you’re using editing because you can’t get it right in the salon – meaning, you’re doing something wrong with the hair – you’re not representing yourself well, you’re not representing your brand well, AND you’re doing a disservice to future clients because you will not be able to provide to them what you’re showing.”

  • No Shortcuts to Success | BMS | EP 058

From knowing your numbers to recognizing when it’s time to create space for yourself as an Artist, in this week’s episode of the Big Money Stylist podcast, Danielle and Ani take on areas of the hair industry that are vital to one’s growth, success, and sanity.

In Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week’s Episode…..PRODUCTION Point #1: Don’t Quit
    • Danielle: It’s not until you hit so many “Oh shit!” moments that you actually start having a little more respect for people who have done what you’re doing, even if you don’t like them.
    • Shit’s a lot harder than you think. There were so many times I wanted to quit but didn’t. And in the not quitting, I have become a better educator, a better person, a better mom.
    QUESTION

What have you learned about yourself by not quitting?

    Point #2: Continuing Education
    • Continuing education is key inside of the hair industry, both for the student AND the teacher. Danielle and Ani agree the more they teach, the more they learn how to become better educators.
    • Ani: By scaling down inside of BMS we’re really pouring into the 250 students we have. Each week we have a small group of 15 students where the attention to detail is making a huge difference in their work.
    QUESTION

Where in your world do you know you need to level up? What steps are you taking do to so?

    Point #3: Do the Work
    • What has frustrated Ani for so long is when people look at her life and her job and only the fun aspects of it – the podcasts, being on stage, teaching, hanging out with Danielle – and want to experience ALL of that but are unwilling to do the work required.
    • Ani: “In reality, that is a minuscule amount of what I actually do. Everything else I do doesn’t look fun. It’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of late nights, a lot of early mornings. You’re telling me you want to step into the company, get paid as a trainer underneath the umbrella of DKW, NBR, and BMS…but you don’t want to do any work for it?”
    QUESTION

Where in your world are you unwilling to do the work required?

    Point #4: Know Your Numbers
    • Ani: By the time artists attend BMS, many are nearly through with the industry. They’re working tons of hours and making next to nothing a lot of times. Danielle: If they actually looked at their numbers based off on the number of hours they’re working, even if they’re super successful, a lot of them want to break down and cry.
    • Danielle: When I first started out, I was doing my numbers but they were very vague and were based on the deposits in my bank account. What I’ve learned is the power lies in the ability to look at your numbers and know how to adjust and problem solve so you’re constantly moving forward, otherwise, you’re regressing.
    QUESTION

When is the last time you looked closely at your numbers?

Point #5: Create Space to Breathe
    • Danielle: When you own your own boutique, it’s not just the physical hours spent doing the art; there’s SO much more that goes into it. And without a full team supporting you, it’s so easy to run yourself into the ground.
    • Ani: Once you start getting to overwhelm, it leads to exhaustion and irritability. EVERYTHING in your life is affected and you find you don’t have time to breathe. You NEED space to breathe. It’s vital for your sanity
    QUESTION

Where are you missing out on opportunities because you’re feeling overwhelmed and can’t see the clear picture of where you currently are in your business?

    Quote of the Week:

“Don’t call yourself an educator and an expert inside of education if you don’t have reps educating. If you’re a client, do your research! Whether you’re going to a class or a salon, make sure you go to somebody you feel comfortable with AND who has reps inside of the industry you’re looking to get the service from.”

    –Danielle K White

“It’s so cool to actually see people willing to go forward and do the work without feeling entitled, knowing it’s going to take more than one day, more than one mannequin head, and more than one client to actually become good at something.”

    –Anianne Rivera
