You would laugh at my creative talent…
Some of my graphics are just downright amateur and guess what?
I
Don’t
Care.
But I kind of have to care.
My graphics are my brand. My brand is my advertising. My advertising creates customers. Customers create income. Income pays my electricity bill. So unless I want to live in a cold, dark house in Minnesota (it’s like negative temps here most of the days between December-March), I need to care about graphics.
But I don’t know how to make graphics.
Meet Canva.
Canva.com is a graphic design company that strives to help solopreneurs and any size business thrive in making graphics. They do all the heavy lifting. You can literally go in and find a template and make a brand in seconds.
There are free and paid versions. I have the paid version for a very specific reason, which I talk about on this week’s podcast. It’s the price of a movie ticket at $12.95 (at the time of this post). So worth it for how I used the paid feature. Take a listen to this week’s episode and tell me if you use Canva. What is your favorite feature.

One of the things I get asked the most is, “How do you podcast?”
I’ve done countless calls on it, Zoom conferences and messages for it. I love connecting with you individually on how this nurse has grown a multiple 5-figure business on the side of working full-time. Podcasting is one of those ways. Anyone can start a podcast. This podcast was the result of God literally telling me to speak to people and teach them how to get out of financial ruin. So even if God doesn’t wake you up in the middle of the night to give you a personal mission- you can start a podcast and here is how and why you might want to start one.
If you have a talent in any area, you can monetize it and having a podcast will help you. I literally cannot think of any circumstance where you starting a podcast wouldn’t add value somewhere. Let’s take for example a dog poop clean up service. I’m serious. Hear me out. If you had a service about cleaning up dog poop you could start a podcast about dogs. You could make it on any topic. Any topic at all. It could have episodes from various Veterinarians talking about dog health to solo episodes about how much poop a dog will have with various sized dogs and things to consider in owning a pet. You could do episodes of pet owners talking about why they love their breed, considerations, etc. All the while you are attracting people to YOUR SOLUTION of picking up dog poop for them while ADDING VALUE to them. See the equation? Problem + Value =Paid Solution. Think about EVERY company out there that sells a solution. They add value to their audience. I even had value added to me by diaper samples for our foster kid in the Target Isles. They know I will be hanging out there and they have stands to show me different brands. They don’t cold call me to ask me if I want to buy their diapers. They offer VALUE.
Maybe my dog poop example was too much for you.
Let’s say that you are a hair stylist.
You could start a podcast on hair trends. Talk about products, hair tips, etc. You could interview people who have advanced styling techniques and have a blog that accompanies your podcast that shows photos - or even an Instagram account and put your podcast link in your bio.
My point is that anyone can start a podcast on any topic. If you are giving value to an audience that cares what you are talking about , you have a reason to podcast. But there are some considerations. Let’s talk about those.
First, it’s going to require you to commit to the show. You don’t have to create a weekly episode but you need to create consistent content. Your audience is going to want to hear from you and the more frequently you give them content, the easier it will be to grow. Next, podcasting requires you to learn a few skills. I am going to go over a few of those in this episode.
The podcast provides my business with weekly engagement from potential customers ALL YEAR. My business moved from a domestic to an international business directly from my podcast. My podcast is listened to in over 12 countries, of which my business is capable of expanding into most of them. Have I convinced you yet you need this?
The second consideration for a podcast is - are you willing to be bad long enough to get good at it? You aren’t going to be excellent right away. You will fumble over your words, feel stuck, not feeling like interviewing people, get nervous interviewing people and over all get frustrated with technology along the way.
Don’t worry.
So here are what you need to podcast and how much each item costs.
Find your message. Ask around in Facebook groups and online if people would be interested in your topic. Do a Quora search for your topic to see if people are asking about your topic. Then get it Trademarked through the USPTO. DON’T SKIP THIS or some yahoo will come and steal your idea and trademark it for themselves.
Apply for the podcast on iTunes. They have step by step instructions on how to do that in the iTunes help features.
Find a site to host your podcast. I currently use Libsyn for $15/month but when I started I used Pinecast for $5/month. Libsyn has extra features like being able to tell what country your listeners are from as well as the ability to push your podcast to Facebook, Linked In, Spotify and Stitcher. Pinecast is excellent if you want to just send the link yourself out to your social sites. I love their customer service and they can also integrate to Spotify!
Buy your equipment. You will need a mic and that is about it. I use an ATR 2100 USB mic.
Use Zoom to record your podcast. I have a paid Zoom account so I am not limited to 30 minutes. Zoom is something I use in my business every day so using it to record was a seamless transition.
Take the recording mp4 file and input it into Garage Band. I tried my darnedest to learn a non mac software for this and found that it is just easier to buy a mac. You can also hire this step out and I have an excellent resource for this. Send me a message for it - I’m not putting his contact info here in case later on he doesn’t take on clients and this post annoys him that people are still contacting him. Let’s pause here for a minute. It’s impossible for me to explain in a post or in this recorded episode all the steps of GarageBand. It’s something I have to show you or let YouTube show you.
Now that you have your finalized mp4 file, you upload it into Libsyn or your host. Libsyn has step by step videos on this but it’s also pretty intuitive. Some of the features on Libsyn I don’t know how to use and I don’t care. You can contact them for those specifics. You will want to make some cover art for this. Cover art will show up on the episodes in Spotify but in iTunes it will be your generic cover art that you used to set up iTunes show. I am doing a whole episode soon on how I use Canva for this. You can check that out soon.
The last step is writing the show notes. This is where you want to talk about the episode. Your title should add value to the customer. They need to read the title and know what they are going to get out of it.
Finally, share your podcast episode to your audience. I use a blog to do that, Mailchimp and my social media platforms.
So there you have it. How to start a podcast. Cheers friend and happy podcasting!

How to change the outcomes when the circumstance is not in your control.
We are on month 3 of recording my mentoring calls with my mentor! Have you been following along with the Allison episodes? I asked her to help me make 100K this year. I am about $15,000 in and doing ALL THE THINGS to make it happen. I realized that I was lacking some serious skills in order to be the person who can make 100K. In the email this week with the listeners I go into a long story about what letting my ego go and letting my soul shine and giving you permission to do so. Sign up here: http://eepurl.com/de_lEH.
This mentoring call was about how to coach people. It’s the area I need the most growth. Coaching people isn’t something you will be innately good at. You have to learn the skills. You listening to this episode right now is the best first step you can do to becoming better at coaching people to greatness. Here are the top tips Allison gives about how to coach people. I learned so much on this call and I know you will too.
Get rid of your ego. Coaching people isn’t about what great advice you are going to give them. It’s about helping them to see their own areas of growth needed.
Realize that people get into greatness in stages.
From rock bottom to ok
From ok to decent
From decent to thriving
You have to get to know them first. You have to know what will make them do something or not do something. Sit with them. Have them tell you why they are doing what they do. Ask a ton of questions. Ask why 5 levels deep (the episode shows you how).
Ask people for a level of commitment. Say, “You just told me _________________ (repeat back their pain points), how committed are you on a scale of 1-10 to changing this? In the episode she tells what to say with each of the numbers.
Dance with them. Ask them what they need from you. Have grace with them that they are going to need 10,000 hours to become good at things. Be patient and have fun!

Gretchen
There I was, laying in bed with the glow of the phone burning my eyeballs at 11 pm at midnight while Mike slept peacefully beside me. Swipe after swipe I could feel the anxiety, tension, comparison, guilt and shame creep in.
“Who do you think you are trying to be as successful as her?”
“Why should you deserve this success?”
“You are never going to look like that no matter how much discipline you have.”
“She is smarter and more successful than you ever will.”
“It’s not going to work for you. You don’t have what it takes.”
Have you ever found yourself being so sucked into social media that you can’t even find your own voice? Social media has been one of the primary drivers into creating multiple 5 figures of extra residual income into my life each year. There is a science and psychology to using social media to improve your net worth and there is also an extreme risk to your mental health when you use it this way. I am not a doctor and I don’t play one on the internet or on this podcast but here are some statistics about what the dangers of inappropriate social media time can do to your life.
There is a statistical correlation between time spent on social networks and depression.
People with lower self reported self esteem have higher user activity online and have more self-promotional content.
Reducing your time online can decrease depression and loneliness.
Here is the deal though. Social media is also a powerful connector. It’s not social media that is bad, it’s how we interact with it that can be bad and that is our responsibility to interact with it safely, professionally and responsibly. 77% of Americans are on social networks so if you are building a residual income stream through customers purchasing your solution, you WANT AND NEED TO BE ONLINE. Here are some tips for making sure that you are spending less time online and more time making positive connections with the time you are online.
Be careful with whom you connect with. You don’t have to be everyone’s friend and friending a bunch of random people in hopes they will buy your product or service is a waste of their time and your time. Build genuine connections.
Use a scheduling app like PLANN. I spend 30 minutes on Sunday nights planning out the weeks post.
Set a timer for being online. I set a timer each night to go and comment and like on people’s posts and I keep a list of people I want to see so that I am not see what the algorithm thinks I want to see but what I really want to see.
Don’t randomly check your notifications throughout the day. In fact, turn them off. Having notifications turned off will decrease the amount of time your brain has to switch between tasks. This is taxing on your brain to switch between tasks and by reducing the frequency of checking your social networks you thereby reduce the fatigue on your brain.
Take my Instagram course! See below for the link. We have outlined how to grow your Instagram in a free course so it takes the thinking and guess work out of how to use social media better.
Forget about checking every notification and responding to every comment. If your business grows - it’s unlikely that you will be able to manage it all. See all those celebrities commenting on every post? Yea- they have full-time staff who help them. Don’t compare yourself to them. Do the best you can with engaging with your audience.
Turn off your phone when it’s family time. This means, no phones at the dinner table, no phones in front of your kids all day, and no phones in the bedroom.
Stay in your own lane. Your journey is uniquely gifted to you. YOU ARE THE HERO OF YOUR STORY. Stop comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle as they say. Who actually said this first? hmmmm, no clue.
Avoid negative engagements and comments. Delete/block is your best friend. You do not have time for negative people in your life.
Make it fun. Use the features of social media that make it fun. Tryout filters, going live, asking questions. Your social media experience will be more noticed when you make it more fun.
Social media is an amazing way to circulate money for causes, rally people together and build community. If you make it that way. I want to know what you think about this topic. Head over to our Facebook group for the discussion!

This week is the second month of recording calls with Courtney Mott. Courtney is on a journey to use a side hustle to reduce her debt and I am coaching her on how to do that. The first month she identified that playing big and not caring what people thought of her is where she needed to go next. She worked on that like mad in the month of January and references several courses and people she went to in order to seek out how to do that. This month she dives into how she is going from absorbing the personal development content to actually implementing a strategy that she can follow daily and like clockwork to MAKE. IT. HAPPEN.
I loved recording this episode with her because she is truly someone who is taking the steps to make it happen.
You might be wondering why I decided to record Courtney and my own journey this year. I’ll tell you why. I listen to hours and hours of podcasts each month of successful people giving you their story. It feels so far away to me. I can’t relate to them most often because I need the stepping stones to how they got there. This season is all about showing you the “how we got there”. We are literally recording our journey as we go with the lessons we are learning and documenting exactly how to do it.
If you are at the beginning stages of your journey, this season is for you. You can follow Courtney’s episodes to see how she is getting out of debt and you can follow my journey as I pursue my first 6 figure year in my side gig.
Money isn't our motivator. It’s the freedom of choice. No debt means choice for Courtney. Choice to know that she is in control of her spending. Six figures represents choice for me. Choice to know that I can create an impactful income for my family without an employer.
Come along for the ride. We are so excited you are here.
