This week we tackle what may be one of the biggest shifts in gaming history: Sony's announcement that physical PlayStation games are coming to an end. With Nintendo already moving toward game key cards and most players buying digitally, we ask the obvious question...is this simply the future, or are we losing something much bigger than plastic discs?
We explore what digital-only gaming means for ownership, collecting, preservation, and even the price of games themselves. Why do physical games often become cheaper while digital storefronts rarely do? What happens when you can't resell, lend, or truly own the games you buy? And if everything becomes a license, what rights are players actually left with?
From there we zoom out into a broader conversation about physical media and why tangible collections matter. We discuss the satisfaction of rediscovering games years later, the importance of preserving gaming history, and whether future generations will ever experience the same connection to their libraries.
We also touch on Sony's recent direction as a company, the disappearance of the used game market, backwards compatibility, game preservation, and why this could mark the end of an entire era of gaming culture.
Big thanks to our patrons for making the show possible, we’ll see you next week!
