Top Ten Best Italian Inventions include Jeans, Telephones, Radio and Liposuction? Yes! Although the first use of suction to help remove fat is attributed to a French surgeon in the 1920s, it was Italian gynecologists Dr Arpad Fischer and his son Giorgio who in 1974 invented the liposuction procedure as we know it today. Their technique involved using a blunt hollow cannula equipped with suction. Shout out on the show today to The Local Italy and their list of ten Italian inventions you may not have known about.

Deidre Maloney wants to help people get happier!
She's spent a whole lot of time not being happy enough herself and says it’s a terrible way to go through this very short life! Deidre spent years researching and talking to happy and not-so-happy folks and decided it was time to get real in her provocative and relatable new book on how to achieve this elusive state of being in her style she calls 'mild audacity'. She's on air with me today at 10:35am eastern to talk about herbook,"Tough Truths: The Ten Happiness Lessons We Don’t Talk About."

Example: 'Lesson 9': The Truth About the Other Guy. So, about the other guy. Happy people get the fact that that guy...the one who seems to be doing everything perfectly, without fear or doubt...is actually feeling these exact emotions from time to time. Because that’s a normal part of his life, too. Happy people don't compare their insides to other people’s outsides.

    About the Author
DEIRDRE MALONEY is a truth teller and international speaker who uses her brand of “mild audacity” to help people live happier, more successful lives. Previous books include The Mission Myth, Bogus Balance, and her previous Tough Truths mini-book, which focuses on leadership. Deirdre currently resides in San Diego with her beloved husband (and slightly-contrarian-but-still-beloved business partner) Jason. Learn more about Deirdre at www.makemomentum.com.

  • Dr Jennifer Gardner, MD., HealthyKidsCompany.com; Tips for New Parents

Many New Parents Are Not Prepared For the Challenges That Lie Ahead Incuding Safety Concerns, Despite Access To More Resources Than Previous Generations.
That's according to Mommy MD Expert Dr Jennifer Gardner, MD., who joins the show Thursday. She says today’s new moms are inundated with advice from experts: “Breast is best;” “let baby cry to get them to sleep;” “never let them sleep with a binkie.” Often conflicting, new moms have to trod carefully around well-meaning relatives and make decisions that are right for their family. In fact she says, a new survey finds that many new moms did not feel prepared for their role, especially when it came to feeding baby. (OMG What about unprepared Grandmas to be of which I am one???)

Jennifer Gardner, MD is a mom of three-year-old son, a pediatrician, and the founder of an online child wellness and weight management company, HealthyKidsCompany.com in Washington, DC

    Topics today will include:
-Why it's important to remember there is not one perfect formula for raising healthy kids.
-What new moms should know to feel prepared when they leave the hospital with their newborn.
-Common infant formula safety myths and what moms can do to ensure baby’s safety.
-Why it’s so important to do your research before baby comes and not only know your options for feeding, but accept that not everything is going to be perfect and easy.

  • Wellness Wednesday! Keto-Kademy with Lori Alberti; CNN Health on Intermittent Fasting

Wellness Wednesday! The KETO Diet is all I'm hearing about lately but I only half understand it. My college roommate is even on it. Sounds a little to me like the Atkins diet gone healthier? (only so many days you can justify eating a pound of bacon). Lori Alberti just returned from something called KETO-KADEMY. (Assume that's an Academy where you learn about Ketosis) I invited her to explain. Lori is a rep for a company that's apparently rocking the KETO landscape called Pruvit . They have a couple hundred thousand followers here on FB and their website states : "Prüvit’s KETO//OS® has started a modern health revolution with over 7 million servings delivered in its first 12 months." Well I haven't sold 7 million of anything so I am obviously curious. You? Tune in 10:20am eastern Wednesday on my show to learn more.

The Power of Ketones - Access Health

    --

Wellness Wednesday! What "IF"? IF = Intermittent Fasting. According to CNN Health: Fasting may help you live longer. " Experts say, a critical aspect of fasting -- which is different from simply restricting calories -- is that the body undergoes a metabolic switch from using glucose to using ketones as fuel, a result of the depletion of liver energy stores and the mobilization of fat. (This switch also occurs during extended periods of exercise.) "If ketones are not elevated, you don't see the beneficial effects." "What's more, these metabolic changes that occur during repeated "cycling" from fasting to eating may help to optimize brain function and bolster its resistance to stress and disease, both of which have positive implications for aging.
According to Longo, the presence of ketones in the blood signifies that on the cellular level, the body is "regenerating" itself, which protects against aging and disease."

NOTE: The research on fasting has focused mostly on overweight individuals or those with risk factors for disease. If you are aging at a healthy body weight and are free of disease, and you eat a healthy diet and regularly exercise, periodic fasting may not necessarily offer an added benefit in terms of lengthening your life.

Fasting is also not appropriate for pregnant women and those with medical conditions such as diabetes or eating disorders.

  • NY Mets Captain David Wright Recieves a Hero's Sendoff; Comedian Jeffrey Gurian hosts Comedy Night at Le Reve

Sometimes Mondays are not back to business as usual. Sometimes debilitating health issues get in the way. This weekend 35-year-old NY Mets Captain David Wright played his last game. He is battling spinal stenosis and that will prevent him from continuing his baseball career. He received a hero’s sendoff. Mets Manager Mickey Callaway said these words about Wright. "He exemplifies everything you want out of a player, he holds his teammates accountable, but first and foremost he holds himself accountable". The man was beloved by so many. So very sad to read of his pain and struggle. So refreshing to read about someone with such character. So important that we're all reminded often one doors closes and another one opens.

I have a personal quote I'd like to share on a Monday for anyone struggling with being forced to make a change for whatever reason: "Events That Force Change Usually Force You To A Better Place." Onward!

  • Random Run In! Grada Fischer of The Fischer Ross Group

Random Run In! Ok, What do Marlo Thomas, Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe, Sherry Lansing, Marie Osmond, and Jane Fonda (and many more) all have in common? Grada Fischer! Grada's Fischer Ross Group handles top-level speakers, dignitaries and celebrities, and provides program-consultation to corporations, universities and a wide variety of other organizations. The Fisher Ross Group is a "booking agency," and in the traditional role of an agent, acts as middleman between the speaker or celebrity and the sponsoring organization. They handle any or all aspects of scheduling, negotiations of fees, creation and execution of contracts, "tech-riders," et al., travel and expense considerations, reimbursements and tax-reporting.

The Fischer Ross Group started over 40 years ago in New York City, as "Ross Associates," a dozen-head, full service, lecture-management agency. It was the only such nationwide agency owned and operated by a woman. In 1990, Grada Fischer-- an account executive in the company-- purchased and renamed the business, "The Fischer Ross Group , Inc."

In 2005 the agency relocated to Greenwich, CT as a "boutique agency," specializing in representing the many celebrities who had been her exclusive representation from the start.

Fun Fact: I ran into Grada and her gal pal who were having lunch at the table across from the one I was lunching at with my business gal pal. We got to talking (about the food Ha) and I realized we knew each other from back when. Grada was a female entrepreneur pioneer and I was an early fan of hers back in my early radio days. We realized we crossed paths again later on in life during the days we were both working with Avon Products in various capacities. Knew when I ran into her AGAIN she had to join me for a whole show. She's so dynamic and interesting and yet - after all the years of her representing some of the biggest names on the speaking circuit...has never actually given a speech herself. LOL Tune in Friday 10-11am eastern.

Over the years Dr. Stack has met with countless anxious patients to explain the results of their mammograms. He knows how frightening and upsetting to have breast health suddenly become the most important priority. His book is a very practical resource for every woman. Wellness Wednesday! YOUR VOICE speaks volumes about who you truly are. Leave it to my wellness gal pal DrTranquility (DrTranquility.com/Lydia) to keep us all in the loop of what and who is trending in the wellness community. Today "Dr Tranquility Presents"...Megwyn WhiteFounder of EmbodyVoice who has spent over 20 years researching and exploring the dynamics of human emotions as they are mapped inside the body’s tissue. Megwyn says, "Your voice is far more than just a means of transmitting and communicating information of words. Voice is intimately connected to how we express emotions, confidence, understanding, and ecstasy. Just like a fingerprint your voice holds the matrix of your essence." Really? As a gal who uses a LOT of voice in what I do I'm really curious myself ! Tune in The Debbie Nigro Show on 1490 WGCH 10-11am eastern.

ABOUT MEGWYN WHITE: Megwyn White has spent over 20 years researching and exploring the dynamics of human emotions as they are mapped inside the body’s tissue. She graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts where she focused on physical theater and dance. She studied Yoga, Pilates, Taoist techniques, Tantra, and a more extensive study in the structure and architecture of the human body with teachers like Yamuna Zake, creator of Yamuna Body Logic, and Yamuna Body Rolling, and Rael Isacowitz, Founder of Body Arts and Science International. Through years working one on one with clients, she discovered "patterns of contraction" in relation to the energy of voice within the body. Her technique includes powerful self-care tools, and rituals that awaken the constellation of emotions that are often locked inside the body's tissue as fear, shame, and trauma.
