  • Doug Freeman, "Workarounds: 50+ insider tactics for age 50+ entrepreneurs"

AGED OUT OF YOUR JOB? NOPE! JUST TIME FOR A DO-OVER! TIME TO RE-PURPOSE YOUR SKILLS! Doug Freeman's got your back 'and your forward' in his new book "Workarounds: 50+ insider tactics for age 50+ entrepreneurs'. Doug says, “I wrote this book because I’ve heard far too many stories about very talented under-employed and unemployed friends and peers who could not continue in their careers due to ageism and changing business models." Adding, “Self-employment really is their best option. But they need to recognize and appreciate the marketability of their unique professional assets. Then, they must learn how their skills, knowledge and experience can be repurposed in new ways as niche business services. That’s when they’ll employ smart tactics to creatively pivot around age-related myths, assumptions and bias in the marketplace.” AND his new book is about building career-related, professional level contract-based businesses, not low-paying gig work, temping or side hustles. Good one Doug!

Tune in and LISTEN LIVE at 10:20am EASTERN to 1490 WGCH. @DebbieNigro.com

  • Executive Chef Jamieson Van Loan, Maikana Foods

The Dowling Financial Group Presents: "VentureMom.com Stories." A series of 'Authentic" interviews with successful entrepreneurial businesswomen to give others insight into their business decisions that worked and didn't. Today's star entrepreneur is Executive Chef Jamieson Van Loan - and her company Maikana Foods. The word Maikana comes from the Fijian words: Mai- Come and Kana- Eat. It is a phrase used daily in Fijian households. Jamieson is Fijian American and this slogan became the perfect way to invite others to "come & eat". After closing her widely popular restaurant in Costa Rica and moving back to her hometown of Darien, CT, Jamieson decided to work on her eating habits and focus on wholesome real food. The same food that was so easily accessible in Costa Rica but not so easy (or cheap) in Fairfield County, CT. She knew if she found it difficult to navigate this healthy path, even as a Chef, then so must a lot of people. So Maikana Foods was born! Her goal with Maikana Foods is to make really and truly wholesome delicious power bowls and meals available to those who want to live a better, healthier life. Maikana Foods offer one large bowl every day and 5 small bowls available Monday through Friday. They deliver your meals right to your door or office. Their business lives in the digital world. They do not have a storefront. All orders must be placed online and delivered to your home or office.
    Bring on the pura vida!

  • 'Poultry Day'

Did I Ever Tell You About the Day I called The USDA Poultry Hotline? Changed my life! I wanted to know if I really had to wash my chicken every time before I cooked it. NOPE! And I've never looked back! Since today is 'Poultry Day', here's the USDA scoop on that. "Washing poultry before cooking it is not recommended. Bacteria in raw meat and poultry juices can be spread to other foods, utensils, and surfaces. We call this cross-contamination. Some consumers think they are removing bacteria and making their meat or poultry safe. However, some of the bacteria are so tightly attached that you could not remove them no matter how many times you washed. But there are other types of bacteria that can be easily washed off and splashed on the surfaces of your kitchen. Failure to clean these contaminated areas can lead to foodborne illness. Cooking (baking, broiling, boiling, and grilling) to the right temperature kills the bacteria, so washing food is not necessary" Using a food thermometer is the only sure way of knowing if your food has reached a high enough temperature to destroy foodborne bacteria.

Yup today celebrates chicken, turkey and other birds we commonly consume. Chicken and turkey are lower in fats, and cholesterol than other meats, making it better for your health. They also give you your breakfast eggs. Want to know how long you can safely keep meat in the refrigerator? Or how long to boil an egg? How about whether it's better to use wooden or plastic cutting boards?

I Just Picked Up A Pair Of Rollerblades. Am I Too Old For What Was Once My Favorite Sport? I'll just go Slowww I thought to myself and then I was reminded of 'Slomo'.
Don't know him? My pal 'Mo' turned me on to this video about 'Slomo' - one of the most compelling videos I've ever seen about enjoying your life and getting in your 'zone'. It's a few years old but the message will never get old. Dr. John Kitchin quit his medical career to pursue his passion - skating along the boardwalk of Pacific Beach In San Diego. Many wondered if the guy was nuts. Filmmaker Josh Izenberg thought he was on to something. The Dr's mantra? “Do what you want to”.
And set out to show us all what might happen if we were able to give up the trappings of our material world and just do whatever the heck we really wanted to do that gives us joy.

Josh Izenberg is a filmmaker based in San Francisco. “Slomo,” was his first documentary and earned him more than a dozen awards including Best Documentary Short by the International Documentary Association and the jury award for best short documentary at SXSW. • Jen Graziano, Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home

Your Dearly Departed May Not Leave So Fast and "Business is Dead" could take on a whole new meaning for some in the funeral industry in NY because of allegations of a funeral exam cheating scandal involving 'the Harvard of Mortuary Schools'. According to Sunday's NY Post article by Susan Edelman, The American Academy McAllister Institute mortuary school has been rocked with allegations of trying to give their students an unfair advantage on the national board exam they took back in 2013 by sending them the questions in advance. The state Bureau of Funeral Directors has now notified 94 NY Morticians that they must retake and pass the exam they took back then by June 30th or apply for an extension in order to keep their funeral director licenses. There's already a limited number of funeral directors and the industry and the industry is already short-staffed by 30%. Many have been in the funeral business for years and now fear losing their livelihoods. AAMI takes 18 months and costs $4000-$5000,. Grads must complete the exam a 12 month apprenticeship and a state test on funeral law.
