Mara Darkmage begins the story, trying to draw Ivan into the tale by naming the hero after him. Lukas, as the real Ivan, reveals a few of Moot’s more useful features. Things quickly go to Hell, and Ivan has no choice but to follow..

The Deckameron: A Year of Otherwordly Tales is a 10 minute weekly serialized story by Seana Kozar, featuring four characters from folklore who are stuck in our world during lockdown and decide to tell parts of an ongoing story every week on a text-based adventure site.

Isabel meets the rest of the party in the Tavern and chooses a name that reveals something about herself, or so Mara believes. Ivan plays peacemaker and Jack introduces the Deckameron as a way to start and keep the story going. Can Mara direct the tale in the way that she wants, or are the others in the group more than they seem?

As a paleontology grad student, Isabel was well acquainted with the need to be careful about what you looked for. Sometimes you found it, glaring at you through the data with a baleful, reptilian eye. Isabel also knew that when one went looking ‘where be dragons,’ sometimes the real beasts lurked within. Or at least within the bloodline. Her stepmother and older brother had certainly acted beastly toward her. She was all but disinherited and now the University’s pandemic policy had left her homeless and unemployed at a single stroke. But, there were two messages on her phone. One was from her research supervisor, who had a plan to address her immediate subsistence. The other was a call to storytelling from a Mara Darkmage. Stories? At a time like this? Why not? Lady Isabel Kempion practically lived her life through marginalia and hunted dragons in the fossil record. It might be fun and she probably wouldn’t even have to make anything up, as long as she didn’t give too much away.

Lukas dreams of becoming a pilot, but for now he has to content himself with delivering the literal stuff of other people’s dreams door to door, as a courier for a global delivery company. He saw the call to storytelling in the Tavern. He had always loved stories and could practice his English. A fine idea, until he discovers that Mara Darkmage might be someone he knows very well, someone who stalks the dark side of dreams and haunts all the stories. Should he accept? “Morning is wiser than the evening,” as the proverb runs. Depends on how far your dreams can run, and whether she’s still there when you wake up...
