Mark Andrew Twitchell, a Canadian filmmaker, was convicted of first-degree murder in 2011 for the killing of John Brian Altinger. Twitchell, inspired by the fictional character Dexter Morgan, lured Altinger to a garage he rented, where he killed him and dismembered the body. Twitchell's trial attracted significant media attention and raised concerns about the influence of popular culture on criminal behavior. Although he initially appealed his conviction, he ultimately abandoned the appeal and remains incarcerated. Twitchell was also charged with attempted murder for an attack on another man who was lured to the same garage, but those charges were eventually dropped.
