Remember in 2003 when everyone wore American flag merch, George W. Bush was invading Iraq, and the Dixie Chicks got blacklisted for being like, "Hey guys, wait a minute, let's not!"?
The country group was riding high at the top of the charts in the early 2000s, but their comments about the Iraq War led to mass boycotts. Their song "Landslide" tumbled off the charts almost immediately and they never really recovered their popularity. In fact, country radio stations in general have played female artists less and less ever since (yes, there's actually a study to back this up).
Keely Quinlan — music writer, Nashville native, military kid and feminist — joins to talk about all this and more. We get to the bottom of questions such as: is the South inherently more racist and sexist than the North? (Probs not.) Are women and Black artists a deviation from the country norm or did they friggin' invent the genre? (It's the latter. Google Sister Rosetta Tharpe.) And will we ever get sick of "Old Town Road"? (No.)
