  • Resolved to try it all again in 2025! (Hour 2)

First, some news and a PSA. Let’s start with the PSA: New Years Eve is frequently a time for drinking, and also a time for driving to celebrations. Do one OR the other, never both. Next, the news. From yesterday, Trump loses his appeal to overturn the $5 Million he owes E. Jean Carrol for defaming her after sexually abusing her in the 1990s. Also, the US Treasury imposes sanctions on Russia and Iran for 2024 election interference. Yes, that’s right, 2024 election interference. More on this when we come back on Thursday.

Then, it’s time to address those pesky New Years’ Resolutions. What’s even the merit of them? Dom’s not so sold, but Jess finds resolutions to be helpful and productive. Here’s one opinion on the matter. Are they worth the effort and time of writing them? Only time can tell…

  • Looking ahead, looking behind, looking for cookies (Hour 1)

It’s December 31st, so we’re participating in the requisite look back at the year of 2024. Y’all, it’s been a wild ride. We start off with Daniel Bice’s article at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on the political winners and losers of the year. In classic Bice style, this list nails the key moments of this political year. Next, looking ahead. The CapTimes compiled a list of what to look out for in Wisconsin’s 2025 political landscape. Some obvious, all worth a read.

Finally, we’re turning to the top searched terms of 2024. This article from Axios lays out the most searched people, events, and phenomena of the year. 2024 felt chaotic for many of us, and our attention drifted far and wide throughout the year. What’s up with the drones, yo???

  • H1-B, is that the next pandemic???(Hour 2)

Harvey Kaye, Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB, joins us for a full hour!

First, as we must discuss, what legacy does Jimmy Carter leave behind? In Harvey’s view, Jimmy Carter failed us as president. Afterwards, he did much better; but as president, Carter failed to strengthen democracy and the rights of workers.

Then, moving on to the simmering MAGA civil war over H1-B visas. These visas allow non-immigrant foreign nationals to work- and therefore live- in the United States legally. As part of Trump’s promise to deport huge swathes of people and reduce immigration overall, these visas are coming onto the cutting board. But not all MAGAs agree. Some, like Elon Musk, used these visas to come to here initially and own or support businesses that rely on H1-B visa holders for employees. Many across the political spectrum criticize the program for suppressing wages and restricting mobility of those who carry the visas.

  • Legacies (Hour 1)

At the top of the hour, we bid farewell to an icon of the 1970s. A household name who dominated the news cycle. We’re talking of course about actress Linda Lavin, who passed on Sunday at the age of 87. She played the eponymous lead in the late 70’s-mid 80s sitcom “Alice” as well as a slate of roles on stage and screen. And of course, we’re actually primarily talking about former President Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100 this weekend. Mr. Carter leaves behind a legacy as marked by his abysmal approval ratings at the end of his presidency as by his remarkable dedication to human rights. Carter’s legacy becomes more complicated with the interference we now know of in his final 12 months, specifically regarding the Iran Hostage negotiations.

These legacies are set. Some are still fervently building their legacies. Like Elon Musk, who is not content being the richest man in the world. He also wants to be the most influential. However, he’s struggling to find his groove as he backtracks from bold stance to whimpering pleas on his own platform.

  • A Smokescreen of Chaos (Hour 2)

Jim Santelle, host of Amicus, a law review, joins us as cohost. As in his first term, President-Elect Trump is setting us up for a chaotic four years. We can expect to receive updates on domestic and foreign policy from unusual sources. Like late night social media rants, multi-hour rambling screeds in front of screaming fans, and troves of reposted half-formed conspiracy theories. This week’s outrage bomb comes in the form of Trump’s demand for Panama to give us back their prized eponymous canal, an offer to buy Greenland (not for sale, according to Denmark), and an extension for Canada to become our 51st state. While media can and should cover each of these outrages, we mustn’t allow this smoke to screen us from the real issues. Trump is already failing to deliver on his campaign promises, by backpedaling and striking out at new targets.

We end the show by asking our audience to tell us something good. In this recurring segment, we highlight that the world maybe- possible- isn’t entirely going to hell.
