Matt Rothschild and Angela Lang, Executive Director of BLOC, guest cohost today.
At the top of the hour, Matt and Angela wrestle with the aftermath of the Abundant Life Christian School mass shooting on Monday. What should be done to protect students, teachers, and all those who use our schools? And what right do we have to know the personal information of those impacted by these tragedies? If you are searching for a way to help those affected by the shooting, one path is to donate to help the community. Among many options, United Way of Dane County has organized a fundraiser you can contribute to here.
We end the show with Wisconsin Poet Laureate, Nick Gulig. He talks with us about how to return to ourselves through poetry. How can we navigate the ‘cacophony of ailments’ that plague the MAGA cult and the poisonous narcissism of Trump?

US Rep Mark Pocan (D, WI-02) joins Matt and Angela at the top of the hour to discuss where we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going. They’re big topics, and worth exploring. The three begin with a somber reflection on the Abundant Life Christian School mass shooting on Monday. Then, they move into where the Democratic party needs to move to retain voters and attract new demographics.
At the bottom of the hour, Farmer Hans Breitenmoser joins Matt and Angela for a talk on representation and immigration. What lessons did we learn from the fight for fairer maps in Wisconsin? And what lessons do we need to learn in this fight over immigration that President-elect Trump is waging?

As we process through the day after yet another mass school shooting, many of us are looking for ways to help. One path is to donate to help the community. Among many options, United Way of Dane County has organized a fundraiser you can contribute to here.
In this hour, Tim talks with Joanna Rizzoto, a Milwaukee teacher, co-host of Educators Amplified, and a frequent Pencil Buster. After continuing to address this moment and what our focus should be in the aftermath of another mass shooting, we move to proficiency. What does it mean for a student to be proficient in a subject? Is “proficient” even a reasonable or useful metric? Or is it just a marketing scheme? The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published a piece on Wisconsin’s adjustment of “proficient” benchmarks on standardized testing. Tim wrote a response, give it a read, it’s worth it!

Today is the day after in Wisconsin. The day after a mass school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. Again. How many times do we need to relive this day, trying to understand how a teenager could commit such an atrocity? Abbey Clements, executive director and co-founder of Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence, joins Tim to talk about this moment. What can we do to help each other move forward? How can we show up for each other?
One way you can help is by donating to help the community. Among many options, United Way of Dane County has organized a fundraiser you can contribute to here.

Guest: Phil NeeJimmie Kaska, Sports Director for Civic Media guest hosts today. In the first hour, we covered the shocking, tragic mass gun violence in Madison at the Abundant Love Christian School.
In this hour, Jimmie talks gas, tariffs, and local elections. First, Patrick De Haan, analyst for GasBuddy, joins Jimmie to talk about gas prices. Just last month, an oil spill from Enbridge Line 6 raised concerns over rising prices for gasoline. Patrick assures us that the amount of oil that spilled is a fraction of a percent of what the line carries each day, so our biggest concern won’t be prices. The spill does however bring further attention to the environmental risks and damages these lines present, which we covered last week. Then, Jimmie talks with Dan Rossmiller, Executive Director, of Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WSAB). It’s not too late to run for school board! Jimmie and Dan discuss what you need to get on your local ballot and get elected!
