Lose fat in your tongue to avoid sleep apnea

Is a fat tongue related to sleep apnea?  Yes, it could be causing snoring, choking, gasping or having periods when you stop breathing during the night.  Obesity is a major cause of sleep apnea.  People with the obstructive form of apnea had considerably larger tongues with higher levels of fat than obese people without apnea.  Yes, the tongue is a muscle, but it’s also marbled with fat.  You can trim down your tongue if you lose body fat and the more you lose, the less symptoms you’ll have.  Apnea not only impacts your sleep, but it damages your brain, can increase your blood pressure, cause depression and increase your risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.  30 million Americans suffer from it.  Accidents, health care and the loss of productivity costs nearly $150 billion a year.  Sleep better by losing weight.

Men, you don’t even realize it

Evolution depends entirely on a person’s ability to reproduce.  Men aren’t conscious of the ways in which they make the decision, but this process has a significant influence over their emotions.  Men are attracted to women who are 2 to 4 inches taller than average and who have lower waist-to-hip ratios meaning that waists are smaller than hips.  This ratio signals sexual maturity, but also indicates higher levels of brain-building nutrients important during pregnancy and breastfeeding.  Wider hips mean a greater potential to survive childbirth.  But, as long-term partners, 75% of men say they focus more on the face than the body.  Men are hardwired to consider age, attractiveness and health to gauge a woman’s fertility and these cues appear on the face.  Nature always finds a way.

Banned drug may lead to ADHD

A pregnancy drug banned decades ago because it caused cancer in women has been found to have side effects that continue for generations.  The synthetic estrogen known as DES was designed to prevent miscarriage, pregnancy complications, and premature birth.  10 million American women took the drug.  Now, the grandchildren of women who took DES during pregnancy are 36% more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than other kids.  Why?  Females are born with all of the eggs they’ll ever have during their lives.  If their mothers took DES while pregnant, then those eggs were exposed, leading to damage in the grandchildren.  Just like DES, chemicals in plastic, pesticides, detergents and cosmetics can also impact generations of children.  Be aware of the products and medications you consume.

The list of what men want

The list of qualities men think are important in a woman is short.  When men were surveyed, the top 4 important qualities included that they be good looking, have a sense of humor, be intelligent and have cooking skills.  It’s along the lines of the expected, but seems somewhat short-sighted.  Beauty fades.  With every child who comes along, there’s less time to devote to appearance.  Cooking skills can improve as time goes on, and those smarts and sense of humor will get sharper with age.  Men underestimate the power of a woman’s intelligence.  If she’s smart, her sons will inherit her IQ.  Smart women are capable of earning big bucks, but men think beauty is #1 and smarts rank at #3.  A sense of humor, ranked at #2, is related to strong intelligence, so, it’s a two-fer.  If men choose beauty over all other qualities, they’ll have to live with that decision.

I’ll sleep when I’m dead and other excuses

We all say it.  “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” as an excuse for our constant sleep deprivation.  We also say, “I’ll exercise when I’m retired.  I just don’t have time”.  Even when we do retire, we’ll move around a little more, but we’ll still have a terrible diet.  We still eat the way we did when we were average Joes on the job.  We have great intentions, but don’t follow through.  As we age, we have even greater levels of obesity and with that comes higher blood pressure and blood sugar.  Retirement was once thought of as a time to “re-boot” our lives, but apparently, we’ve decided to mostly sit.  It’s a case of “you rest, you rust”.  Yes, we’re kinda’ tired from working all those years, so go ahead and sleep late for a few months, adjust to your new lifestyle and take some time to plot the course for the rest of your life.  Make sure you include plans for exercise and healthier eating.

The reality of the e-cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes have been promoted as a safe alternative to natural tobacco.  We now know that e-cigarettes are very dangerous, especially for teens and younger kids.  Research done by the University of Connecticut proved that nicotine e-cigarettes are just as harmful to human cells as unfiltered tobacco products.  And, the non-nicotine e-cigarettes caused damage to cells just like filtered tobacco cigarettes do.  Even if you don’t have the hideous mouth sores, that hacking cough, and even if you don’t come down with chronic bronchitis or have shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, you’re still doing a tremendous amount of damage to your lungs and your overall health.  The FDA was very late in investigating the safety of vaping, especially the chemicals involved.  It’s up to us to be wary of new products.  Stop vaping now!
