On this episode of The Drinklings, we are discussing the dystopian book WWZ by Max Brooks. With everything going on during the COVID lifestyle, we decided that it was time to bring in some post-apocalyptic knowledge to the table by analyzing the fiction aspect of what could and might happen. While we did record this through Zoom, to make our discussion as true to our current climate as possible, we did visit a wonderful brewery in Carrollton, Ga name Printer’s Ale prior. Of course, we did social distance and wear masks while at the brewery, which everyone should visit with its massive outside area and plenty of protocol to safely give you the best brewed local beer you can imagine. We hope you enjoy to this discussion on the survival manual for zombies and hopefully not our future. But if so, you might pick up a bit of apocalyptic help!
For this episode of The Drinklings, we discuss the Baz Lurhmann film Romeo + Juliet. This is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic play, which introduced the famous star-crossed lovers. Beyond the film, we also discuss the impact of adaptations and whether they can hurt or help an original text. This recording was recommended by Drinkling’s Jenna but seemed appropriate as April is recognized as the birth month of the famous Bard of Avon. We choose to record at Nama in Carrollton and were served by the wonderful bartenders upstairs! Or drink was a Mint Julep, which was picked for no other reason than a horrible pun. Hopefully you will pick a side on whether the Lurhmann version is a substantial re-telling that stands on it's own or a modernized mess. Either way, enjoy!
For this episode of The Drinklings, we will discuss Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. Along with this incredible work of peaceful explanation for why the African-American protesters were trying to show the main populace of all the egregious laws and overall hatred set to simply quiet their voice, we will also talk about how such a letter could wind up being one of our most historical pieces of literature. This was recorded on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2020 at The City Tavern in Carrollton, Ga. We choose the upstairs section to get a clearer recording and ensure that we gave this text the respect it deserves. The drink is a mixture of ginger ale that is only made in Birmingham, Alabama, the tasty Buffalo Rock, made similar to a Moscow Mule with tequila. It turned out to be delicious and was made by a great bartender, David. Ask for him if you go, along with Sam and others. We tried to give this podcast the respect that Martin Luther King Jr. is owed, all the while having enough fun that he might laugh to. Enjoy!
On this episode of The Drinklings, we will discuss the final episode of the main Star Wars film with The Rise of Skywalker. Along with this heavily “SPOILER”-laden conversation, we discuss the background of the series and how it has impacted movies since. This was recorded on New Years eve of 2019 at Nama with a wide range of bartenders and customers that frequent the wonderful Sushi Restaurant in Carrollton, GA. We certainly enjoyed the New Year festivities, as well as discussing one of our favorite series ever. Again, with peace and love, there are a heavy number of “SPOILERS”, so listen if you dare. The drink is named The Rise of Skyy Vodka and is a delicious sweet beverage that was inspired on the liquid which Luke drinks in A New Hope and The Last Jedi. We hope you all had a safe and wonderful end to the year with hope in the force of the new one. Enjoy!
On this episode of The Drinklings, we will discuss the Christmas holiday anchored around the classic tale, A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. Along with the discussion of the themes and characters within this well-known Victorian book, we will also be analyzing the ideas and beliefs tied to the Christmas season, which hold a different place in everyone’s heart. Though the podcast does get a bit rambunctious towards the end, the love of the season proves quite beneficial in all the teachers’ hearts. Our drink for this episode will Camry’s Rum Punch, which was mentioned in Dicken’s text, although with bartender extraordinaire Camry’s special tweak on the drink. This episode takes place at the wonderful Nama in Carrollton that proved to be a well-festive spot for the holidays. We hope you enjoy the podcast wherever this holiday season finds you!
In this episode of The Drinklings, we analyze the themes and effectiveness of storytelling from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. We discuss how certain plot and character decisions impact our enjoyment of the movie, and later on how it can tie to other Tarantino classics. There will be spoilers in this one, so if you haven't seen it, then know that you've been warned. This episode was recorded at Nama Restaurant (middle floor bar) in Carrollton, GA. Ask for my girl Maddi over there. She's top shelf!
On this episode of The Drinklings, we discuss the Thanksgiving classic film, Planes, Trains and Automobiles. As this is one of the few films giving a nod to the holiday of gluttony that isn’t based on cartoons nor Native American historical re-imaging, we all agreed that this film remains a must-see for many different reasons. Apart from the film, we also discuss the fears of a big city, how to deal with people in general, and the correct use of the Oxford Comma. Furthermore, we analyze the benefits of Thanksgiving and how it is interpreted in today’s society. Our drink for this episode is the Automobile, and we were served by the wonderful Maddi and Camry at the always excellent Nama in Carrollton, GA. We hope you enjoy this episode wherever this holiday season finds you!
In this episode of The Drinklings, we analyze the character of Tom Bombadil in the Tolkien classic, The Fellowship of the Rings. We focus on theories based on the character, as well as discuss the effectiveness of Bombadil to the overall story-line. This episode was recorded at the upstairs bar of The Irish Bred Pub in Carrollton, GA with the wonderful Haley as our bartender. Enjoy!
n this episode of the Drinklings, we discuss the movie IT, and how the characters/plot points feed into a larger theme of fear, control, growth, etc. Our drink is the Bloody Carrie, which is as pertinent to the discussion as you would think if you read Stephen King’s Carrie or saw the movie. Part of our tasting the drink does get uncomfortable at times, but the three fans that we hold dear will enjoy it. After discussing the movie IT, we bring in the Angela Carter classic short story “The Bloody Chamber”, which is included in the book of short stories titled by the same name. This is a re-telling of the classic Bluebeard fairy tale. As usual, there are spoilers here and some taboo language used, but nothing too heavy. We were at the Irish Bred Pub in Carrollton, GA on a Sunday, and we hope you enjoy. Shout out to my boy Shane who is a key bartender there and cut us off when we needed it.
In this episode of the Drinklings, we will be discussing the classic film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. By diving into the character structures and obvious themes ruining through, the discussion starts off based on the film, but then takes different avenues into topics such as defining rites of passages and even what defines an authoritative figure. Our drink will be the Sangre de Cristo and we had it made at the great sushi bar, Nama, in Carrollton, GA. I want to give a big shout out to the wonderful bartender Madi for making a great drink that most of us enjoyed. We hope you enjoy!
