The Drop episodes

  • The Drop — 2/8/23
    1. Skull & Roses coming to Ventura County Fairgrounds. We’re proud to partner with this festival that explores unique interpretations of Grateful Dead music at California’s legendary Ventura County Fairgrounds April 19-23, 2023.
    2. Backstreets closes after 43 years. This Bruce Springsteen fanzine that was founded in 1980 decided to stop publishing. We’ve talked a lot about how fans typically don’t hold artists responsible for this rise in ticket prices, but here’s an example of something that happened as a result. And fans who are holding the artist accountable. We’ll see how much more this happens.
    3. Goose Chicks Pod talks about Goose and love. As we approach Valentine’s Day, we have a new episode from the Goose Chicks Podcast about the people who have found lasting love and connection via the Goose community. Really cool.
    4. HF Pod 40 for 40 rambles on! We're continuing our celebration of 40 years of Phish! This year we cover 1987. And today we have a great show in Phish history, 2/8/91 from Portsmouth, NH.

Let’s talk about the Grammys! Share and review this show wherever you get your podcasts!

    1. Congrats to Snarky Puppy! They won for the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, which is amazing. We should mention, of course, that we produced a podcast with them about the making of this album. This is their 5th Grammy. Congrats to their whole team.
    2. Congrats to Eric Krasno! A song he co-wrote with Dave Gutter for Aaron Neville and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, “Stompin’ Ground,” won Best American Roots Performance. Check out his podcast, Eric Krasno Plus One.
    3. Huge night for Harry Styles, Brandi Carlisle, Beyoncé, Bonnie Raitt, and more. And Kim Petras and Sam Smith won a Grammy for the best pop or group performance for their viral hit “Unholy.” Petras is the first trans woman to win in the category. And Beyoncé goes on to have the most Grammys of any individual artist. Congrats!

    1. New Inappropriate Happiness with Karina Rykman and Isaac Slone. Karina and Isaac are great—they talk about tours, shows they’ve seen, and a lot more. I look forward to hearing from them every week, and there’s a new episode today.
    2. Merck Mercuriadis talks about the future of acquiring song catalogs. I mentioned last week that Justin Bieber’s catalog had been acquired for $200M, that was Merck’s company, Hipgnosis. In this interview, he talks about the acquisition of catalogs and what it means to him. They’ve sent about $3B over the past 10 years, acquiring 60,000 songs from huge artists across the board. Fascinating.
    3. New Unknown Mortal Orchestra double album coming March 17. The New Zealand based band is set to release their first album since 2018, and they have a new single, Layla, out today. You can watch that on Relix.
    4. Springsteen is back on tour! This is so exciting. Bruce kicked off the first E Street Band tour in six years in Tampa on Wednesday with a 28-song set that lasted almost 3 hours.

    1. The New Weird Virtuosos Making Jazz for the Post-Internet Age. From our friend Andy Cush, there’s a profile of artists like DOMi & JD Beck (who also happen to be nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist) and how these amazing, young jazz players are mixing in the humor and viral potentiality of the online age to create a new following and very interesting music.
    2. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees Announced. This year has a really eclectic list, from Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael and Sheryl Crow, to Kate Bush, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, The Spinners, A Tribe Called Quest, The White Stripes and Warren Zevon. Who got snubbed? Who should be next?
    3. New music for 2023! Pitchfork released a rundown of a lot of music coming up in 2023. Too much to name, but check out the list. I’m looking forward to new albums from boygenius, The National, and Yo La Tengo.

    Thanks for tuning in!

    1. Marc Brownstein rig tour with Ryan Storm. Our friend Ryan has a few of these video rig tours lined up, if you haven’t seen them, you gotta check them out. Brand new today is Marc Brownstein! Next week is Neal Francis, and Joel Cummins of Umphrey’s the week after that.
    2. Rock Docs Pod on Born To Run with … me! I got to be a guest on this podcast to talk about a documentary called Wings To Wheels, about the making of this classic Bruce album. It was a lot of fun.
    3. Re:SET music festival aims to change the way music festivals engage with fans. Just announced, Re:SET will hit 12 cities this Summer, featuring LCD Soundsystem, Boygenius and Steve Lacy. In each city, fans will have a unique experience—allowing the headlining acts to curate the lineup for their respective day.

    1. AI coming for music. One of the big stories of the past few months has been ChatGPT and how that affects our lives. I’m following this story about Google’s creation on the music side, called MusicLM.
    2. Warner shifting vinyl production to decrease environmental impact. One of the big 3 labels says it’ll shift from 180g to 140g vinyl, investing in ways to produce records without PVC, and adopting recycling from production offcuts. They’ll also move more production to the US. Here’s a fact to keep in mind for collectors: Pressing plants can use antiquated steam boilers and a toxic brew of chemicals to make records, giving vinyl 12 times the greenhouse gas emissions of other physical media production like CDs.
    3. No Simple Road trucking on. If you’re a Dead fan, or a fan of the jamband and music community, this show is for you. The team does 2 episodes per week, one focused on a weekly rewind, and one with an artist interview. Their family vibe and warmth and intelligence produces some really insightful and unique interviews.

    1. Deadicated: Taping the Dead, 1965-1995. Relix has an interview with Mark Rodriguez, who put together a beautiful book and project that goes deep into the origins of taping, tape-trading, and has thousands of images and documents from the band’s archive.
    2. RIP Tom Verlaine. Best known as the frontman of Television, Verlaine was a staple of the New York scene for decades. If you never have, or even if you have, give Marquee Moon a listen.
    3. Get some Section 119 gear. I want to give a shout out to our friends at Section 119, who is now an officially licensed partner of Phish.

    1. California venue owners react to Senate hearings. Ineffable Music Group, which owns venues in Santa Cruz [The Catalyst, which may be familiar to Phish fans], Ventura, Berkeley, and several other cities, said that effective immediately they won’t take 20% merch fees from artists anymore.
    2. Ace turns 50. Bob Weir’s first solo album, the genesis for so many great songs, gets a deluxe edition reissue this year to celebrate this anniversary.
    3. King Gizzard unveils monster Red Rocks live release. This week we got an 86-track King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard live release from their 2022 Red Rocks run. They played 3 long shows, and wow, this is a great live release. Part of their interesting Bootlegger program.
