Cork club hurling was back in style this weekend with champions Sars showing they remain the team to beat at Premier Senior, Glen Rovers adjusting to life in Senior A comfortably, even without the injured Patrick Horgan, and Dungourney pulling off an opening round upset over Ballinhassig, with Cork U20 Jack Leahy lashing over 0-15. 

Watergrasshill pulled off the result of the Bank Holiday Holiday weekend though when they roared back from 10 points down against Division 2 league champions and fancied for the PIHC title, Carrigaline. 

That was undoubtedly the result of the opening round, and after some cracking games in the football championships, the hurling action didn't disappoint.

The race for the All-Ireland SFC seems a bit more open following Dublin's departure but that doesn't necessarily mean that the games will be more open.

The Cork footballers' season came to a very underwhelming conclusion in picturesque Inniskeen where the glorious weather didn't inspire the Rebels the way it had when they stunned Donegal.

On this week's Echo Sport Podcast, Denis Hurley and Barry O'Mahony join Éamonn Murphy in the studio to look on the major issues impacting Cork GAA, with a focus on the footballers' elimination and what the future holds.

John Cleary was unsure about his future as Cork manager on Sunday, but is entitled to a fourth year at the helm. Cleary may decide to freshen up his backroom if he commits to 2025. If he doesn't, there are no obvious candidates to replace him.

Looking at the bigger picture, Cork minor and U20 results, and performances in the Corn Uí Mhuirí schools competition, were alarming this year and Conor Counihan will step down in September as Director of Football.

Who should fulfill that role now? And what targets should be set after the first Five-Year Plan didn't deliver?

On the hurling front, Cork were very unconvincing in beating Dublin and will need to be far sharper and more aggressive to have any hope of taking down Limerick in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Can John Cleary's side shake off the disappointment of a near-miss against Tyrone? Brian Hurley is set to be absent against Louth so they'll require a greater scoring threat from deep. It'll be the fifth Cork-Louth game in two years and the biggest margin between the counties has been four points.

The hurlers coughed up some cheap goals against Offaly but scored four and will know they need to be sharper against the Dubs. Ciarán Joyce might be needed in defence to tighten up while Seamus Harnedy's return would add ball-winning on the wing.

Ethan Twomey was missing as well last weekend but his work-rate and size could be vital to strike the right balance around midfield.
