  • [Girlfriend Chat] Giving Yourself Permission to Quit with Deb McCollum

Does the idea of quitting a job or a hobby make you anxious? Is there something you are still doing that no longer serves you, but you’re sticking with it because of what other people might think about you?

Deb McCollum returns for a girlfriend chat about quitting and how liberating it can be. We grow up with so many negative connotations around the concept of quitting. We tend to avoid quitting things because we have internalized the idea that this shows vulnerability or causes others to look down on us. People grow over time and what used to serve us may not anymore. Therefore, it is important to give yourself permission to move on to new things that will better fit into your lifestyle and bring you more happiness.

Tune into today’s episode of Self-Love for Breakfast to learn why it doesn’t reflect poorly on you as a person if you choose to quit something that is no longer serving you. Learn how empowering it is to recognize that if something isn’t for you anymore, you have the ability to stop doing it.

    Quotes
    • “No one’s mad at you, and if they are, it’s fine. They can be mad.” (12:25-12:29 | Deb)
    • “I think we’re moving into an era and it’s really exciting to see people owning that they just don’t want to freaking do something anymore. You deciding that this was no longer for you doesn’t mean anything bad about you.” (17:37-17:56 | Deb)
    • “As a society, we attach to identities and run with them… But we grow and change and evolve over time, so there’s going to be a point where an identity that felt really freaking good just doesn’t fit anymore.” (26:25-26:49 | Chrystal)
    • “Quitting is okay. It’s okay to quit. You’re not the same person you were 10 minutes ago.” (30:00-30:08 | Chrystal)

  • [Solo Sesh] My Mental Health Journey

TW: This episode contains information about abuse and suicide that may be triggering for survivors.

Have you ever experienced an anxiety spiral that you were sure would last forever? Have you struggled to heal from past trauma?

Host Chrystal Rose understands firsthand the difficulty of processing trauma. After experiencing an abusive childhood, Chrystal felt unworthy of love, which manifested into depression along with body image and relationship issues. After promising to stop herself from falling too far into the darkness, Chrystal began a lengthy mental health journey that eventually led her to a place of peace.

In today’s inaugural episode under the new name Self-Love for Breakfast, Chrystal details her experience with emotional pain and healing. Learn how Chrystal began to process her childhood wounds, take emotional responsibility, and realize that poor mental health does not have to be a life sentence.

    Quotes
    • “I think it's really important to talk about when you're struggling. It's not always pretty. It's not always glitter and sunshine and rainbows out there. So when you're able to share yourself with another person it can be like, oh, wow, if they can do it, so can I.” (07:48-08:05)

    • “I didn't feel like I was worthy of attention because I wasn't getting it.” (11:53-11:57)

    • “I had these layers of pain and trauma that I had just experienced, that no one could understand. No one in my life could really understand. And I didn't understand it, I didn't know how to process it. I didn't know how to deal with it. But it was there.” (16:32-16:48)

    • “It was the first time I ever felt like I realized that I was responsible for my emotions. I haven't had emotional responsibility. I could master my emotions.” (31:53-32:05)

    • “If you're going to work with a coach that has not worked on themselves, like the depth of what you need to do, run away. Because you cannot hold someone else if you have not held yourself.” (33:29-33:45)

    • “There is so much more hope. Knowing what I know now, I have so much more hope that people can heal. This is not a life sentence.” (38:34-38:44)

Learn how Jessica was able to take control of her physical and mental health and finally begin taking the steps she needed to heal.

    Quotes
    • “I hear, especially from women, like, ‘Oh, well, I've been doing this, so I can't really change.’ And, you can do whatever. I know it's scary, but you can do whatever you want. And if you don't really love what you do, find a way to do something else.” (5:53-6:09 | Jessica)

    • “You know your body better than anyone and if you know something isn't quite right or something is off with your body, you have to keep pushing until you get answers, period.” (20:01-20:13 | Chrystal)

    • “There's a difference between having someone guide you into your healing, whether that be a life coach, a therapist, a doctor, and actually healing you. If someone says that your healing is in their hands, run away.” (22:51-23:06 | Chrystal)

    • “If you feel good, that's what matters. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or what anyone else says.” (33:51-33:55 | Jessica)

    • “You just have to stop listening to other people. You have to stop listening to people that criticize you. You have to stop listening to that inner critic.” (35:00-35:09 | Jessica)

    • “People don't realize that your energy is not something that you just have to let bleed out everywhere. You can protect your energy, not just from other humans, but also from the ick of social media.” (38:26-38:38 | Chrystal)

  • [Solo Sesh] Cutting Out the Triggers

Has a friend or family member ever triggered an emotional response from you? Did you cut that person out of your life or did you give them the benefit of the doubt?

Often, when we encounter people who disagree with us or have something we want, a feeling of discomfort is activated. Rather than self-reflecting, we are quick to assume that this person meant to cause us harm. Although it’s important to set up boundaries with our loved ones, it’s equally important to take a step back and dig deeper. Are these people abusive, or is unresolved insecurity wounding our egos? Of course, there are cases where it is necessary to remove toxic relationships, but if someone simply thinks differently than you do, it can be worthwhile to give them a chance.

Tune into this week’s solo sesh for a conversation with host Chrystal Rose about finding compassion for those who are different from you. Learn how to distinguish toxicity from triggers, understand people’s experiences, and look within yourself to grow.

    Quotes
    • “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it sets the tone for everything else. And if we're eating self love for breakfast, well shit, you guys, our day is gonna be awesome. Or at least a lot better than a day where we don't start it out with self love.” (5:27-5:45)

    • “Whatever is underneath the trigger is still there. Just because you remove something from your life doesn't mean you've truly dealt with it.” (9:30-9:45)

    • “What about trying to understand where a person is coming from before knee-jerking to just cutting them off because we decided that their intentions were bad? We're so quick to jump to negative feelings and defend our ego due to our own insecurities more often than not.” (15:40-15:59)

    • “Have some compassion. My goodness, I see people screaming at each other to have compassion, while they're not having compassion for the person they're yelling at to have compassion. And having compassion is about other people's experiences, right? Everything I have been through in my life, from start to here. All of my own experiences have created my beliefs.” (18:22-18:49)

    • “Let's look deeper. How can we grow? How can we become better versions of ourselves? And sometimes that's digging into the ugly stuff. Sometimes that's having the kind of conversation with ourselves and with others that we don't want to have. This is shadow work.” (29:28-29:46)

  • [Girlfriend Chat] The Dangers of Unfair Criticism with Deb McCollum

Have you ever been publicly criticized for how you dress or what your opinions are? Have you ever openly criticized others for the same things?

Deb McCollum returns for a girlfriend chat about people who tear others down on this week's episode of The Self Love Breakfast Club. It may seem harmless to make fun of a celebrity on a blog, but our words have an impact. Not only does this behavior hurt others, but it also doesn't address the reason why we feel malice towards them. Whether someone triggers you because of unresolved insecurities or jealousy, it's important to work on yourself and trust that all people are capable of change.

Tune into Deb and Chrystal's conversation on the subjectivity of fashion, accepting life's triggers, and the divisiveness of our current social climate. Learn how they became more supportive people, who try to make others feel good about themselves to create a kinder, more accepting world.

    Quotes
    • “There's so many things in life that are subjective right? Beauty being one of them, fashion, clothing. We all forget that we're not going to be the same. This is what frustrates me, especially, if it's women criticizing women specifically. We are all different, do you want someone to be exactly the same as you?” (6:01-6:22 | Deb)

    • “If someone activates something in you or triggers something in you, that's your problem. That's something that you need to look at. That's either something you're seeing reflected in them that you haven't made peace within yourself or you're battling in yourself or it's a fear you might have for yourself. Or, it could also be on the flip side, you're seeing something and you don't believe that you can have it, right?” (14:28 - 14:52 | Chrystal)

    • “We're in this time where everything is so divided and people are ‘this’ or ‘that.’ And if you're not ‘this’ or ‘that,’ it's really kind of frustrating because you're like, I don't even fit in with any of you people and you guys are fighting each other. And you'll probably just fight me too, because we don't fit here.” (15:30-15:50 | Chrystal)

    • “I've tried to teach myself to just be supportive. If you're going to say something out loud, just know that if it comes back to you, you better fucking own it.” (25:40 -25:50 | Deb)

    • “Fundamentally at our core, people are capable of change and we're supposed to change for the better ideally. So, just because someone has been unkind before doesn't mean they deserve it. You know, no one deserves to be shit on really.” (28:36 - 28:55 | Chrystal)

    • “Your words have an impact. Wouldn't you rather, to a stranger, make them feel good about themselves or help them to feel good?” (32:36 - 32:44 | Deb)

  • [Solo Sesh] Releasing the “How” to Get Where You Want to Go

Do you have an idea in your head of what your highest self looks like? Do you find yourself focusing so much on becoming that person that you ignore your internal needs?

We often convince ourselves that the only way to achieve our goals is to follow strict steps and add more and more into our lives, despite what our intuition tells us. We believe that being "a perfectionist" or "people-pleaser" is who we are, rather than behaviors caused by anxiety. Today's episode of The Self Love Breakfast Club is all about taking care of yourself and listening to your gut, so you can shed the destructive coping strategies preventing you from achieving what you truly want.

Tune into this week's solo sesh for a conversation with host Chrystal Rose about what it means to be your highest self and "releasing the attachment of how you get there." Learn to embrace your feelings, accept the obstacles you cannot control, and discover that finding alignment is the key to becoming your best self.

    Quotes
    • “No one at their very core self essence is a perfectionist. No one at their very core essence is a people pleaser. Because that is a coping strategy.” (2:52-3:02)

    • “Your highest self is you fully expressed. It's you living in alignment. It's you listening to your gut and your intuition.” (4:07-4:19)

    • “You can be happy, you can get to where you want to go. You just need to release the attachment of how you get there and turn inward and take care of yourself.” (16:56-17:10)

    • “The real stuff is your energy, the real stuff is your state of being. And so, if you are so deeply rooted in who you are, and you have worked through your shit, you're going to attract other people, you're going to attract what you want. Because you are going to be in alignment.” (17:56-18:19)

    • “I had to stop asking how, and I just had to start being me. Asking myself every single day, what do I need today? What do I need?” (21:11-21:23)

  • [Interview] Redefining the Survivor Identity with Kara Robinson Chamberlain

“I get to choose where I find my identity,” says Kara Robinson Chamberlain, a survivor and motivational speaker. At just 15 years old, Kara narrowly escaped a serial killer, an experience that forever changed the course of her life. After starting her career in law enforcement, Kara now inspires and educates others through her unbelievable story of survival.

In today’s episode, Kara details the actual events leading up to her kidnapping and how she was able to escape. Through her tendency to dissociate during stressful situations, she narrowed in on the minor details and ran at the first available opportunity. Although Kara’s return to everyday life was far from easy, with many people not knowing how to treat her, she was determined to move forward. Kara’s path may have been shaped by her trauma, but ultimately she is the only one who can define who she is today.

Tune into this week’s episode of The Self Love Breakfast Club for a conversation about healing and finding purpose after trauma. Learn how Kara was able to flee a terrifying situation, determine her own identity and accept that slow progress is still progress nonetheless.

    Quotes
    •
“I always found a reason. I didn't question why this happened to me. I always felt like this happened to me and I dealt with it, you know, air quotes, ‘dealt with it,’ so well, because one day I will help one person. That's it. That's my goal, help one person.” (19:19-19:34 | Kara)

    • “I'm so much more than that. Yeah, that's part of my story. But it's such a small part of my life. And I get to choose where I find my identity. And I don't find my identity in that. I use that to refine me. And I use that to shape me and to move forward.” (20:47-21:04 | Kara)

    • “We all deal with trauma in different ways. And none of it's bad or wrong. But of course it's something that we got to look at. We have to heal in order to really be our best self for ourselves and for others and to feel okay.” (28:58 - 29:14 | Chrystal)

    • “I think that's one of the biggest things that humans just desire, you know, besides love and feeling good enough, they want to feel seen and that's a part of it.” (32:31-32:40 | Chrystal)

    • “As long as you just keep going, you're going to make progress. And I think in a healing journey, we can feel just so futile, right? Like, oh, it's still not better. It's like, well, you're making progress.” (38:23-38:38 | Kara)

  • [Girlfriend Chat] Knocking Sense into My Younger Self

Remember being a teenager and how unkind you were to yourself? Remember wishing you were prettier, skinnier and more worthy of love?

On this week’s episode of The Self Love Breakfast Club, Deb McCollum returns for a girlfriend chat about the insecurities of adolescence. Together, Deb and Chrystal discuss their teen years and the advice they would give their younger selves. Everyone has things about the past that they wish they could change. However, it’s essential to be kind to yourself and not let your growing pains define who you are as an adult.

Tune into Chrystal and Deb’s conversation on people-pleasing, male validation, body image and the importance of communication. Learn how they slowed down enough to stop fixating on the destination and finally appreciate the journey.

    Quotes

    •
“Stop trying to people please is the first thing I would tell my younger self. If I could just smack her against the head and say, ‘Stop it. This is not serving you. This is not helping you. Why are you so worried about what everyone's thinking about you?’” (6:50-7:07)

    • “At the end of the day, you go to bed with your own thoughts. And that's on you then if you're going to think that about yourself, and you're not going to feel good. And so, I would tell my younger self to be more kind to myself, the way I am kind to other people.” (17:59-18:13)

    • “It didn't matter how skinny I actually was, I never felt like I was….I was always picking myself apart. But if I had just learned to lift weights and been told, ‘No, this is good, and you'll look great, and you'll feel better, and you'll be strong and, let's focus on strength as opposed to the skinny,’ I can't even imagine what my confidence would have been like, and just how I would have felt in my body in my 20s. I literally wish I had found it.” (22:03-22:38)

    • “People are afraid of what others are going to say if they voice their true feelings or opinions, or, hey, this is bothering me. And to be honest, to this day, I still have to rehearse things. I'll do it, but I have to rehearse it, I have to be ready. And I have to mentally prepare myself sometimes….And that's the work that I've done to be able to communicate with someone.” (27:31-28:00)

    • “I skipped steps because I just wanted to get to the finish line, and I never understood the journey. Like, the journey is supposed to feel like the destination. If the journey doesn't feel like the destination, the journey is what needs work, not necessarily where you want to go. Where you want to go is going to forever shift, the target is going to keep moving.” (31:21-31:47)

  • PART 2 Breaking Free from Bad Body Habits: Chrystal Rose on the Break Free from Binge Eating Podcast

Has fear stopped you from reaching your goals? Have you found that the more you focus on your toxic behaviors, the more difficult they are to change?

In today’s episode of The Self Love Breakfast Club, Chrystal features Part Two of her interview on the Break Free from Binge Eating Podcast with host Victoria Kleinsman. Together, Chrystal and Victoria discuss the role of fear in our everyday lives. We may want to start a business or take a risk, but it’s hard to get started when you’re in a constant state of flight or fight.

Tune into this week’s episode of The Self Love Breakfast Club for a conversation about looking inward to shift negative thought patterns, listening to your body’s signals, and accepting that we need adversity to grow. Learn how Chrystal moved past her own body insecurities to create an inclusive space for women to work on themselves with compassion and self-love.

    Quotes
    •
“Yeah, I mean your body signals you, right? That's information. I'm giving you information when you tense up and you get upset. That is information. And then it's like, okay, what needs to be healed here or what needs to be loved here because there's something still here and we will always have work to do.” (11:42-12:01)

    • “You've evolved and you’ve grown as a person, every time that we need it. We need adversity to grow. Life is not just going to be smooth and flowy all the time. We all wish it could be. But that's not how it works.” (19:35-19:48)

    • “But yeah, it's just gonna be this beautiful community of women: we’re all owning our own shit, right? Like, we're all showing up. And it doesn't matter what your beliefs are, it doesn't matter who you voted for. We don't care about that. You're here because you're working on yourself and you want to be a loving kind human to yourself and others and support other people in their journeys.” (23:11-23:35)

    • “You don't have to respond right away, you don't have to jump to do all the things. You get to take a couple of deep breaths and take a step back. And you can do that in just about any scenario. I think creating space is one of the things that helps shift so much more, because we're no longer living by default.” (27:15-27:34)

    • “Rather than play whack a mole with your behaviors and trying to change your behavior, maybe look a little bit more inward and just see where did this stem from? When did I start this? What was the feeling attached to it?” (28:08-28:20)

  • PART 1 Breaking Free from Bad Body Habits: Chrystal Rose on the Break Free from Binge Eating Podcast

Have you ever felt that if you could just change your outside, you would finally be good enough? Have you also found that even when your body does change, you’re still not happy?

In today’s episode of The Self Love Breakfast Club, Chrystal features the first half of her interview on the Break Free from Binge Eating Podcast with host Victoria Kleinsman. Together, they discuss the difficulty of changing your thoughts to break free from toxic behavior. We often tend to think that if we just lose more weight or drink more water, all of our problems will go away. However, Chrystal acknowledges that body and food obsessions usually reflect a deeper-seated issue that requires facing your inner child to resolve them.

Tune into Part One of Chrystal and Victoria’s conversation on body image and everything that drives it. Learn how Chrystal began to view food differently, appreciate her body, and shift her beliefs to remember that her highest self has always been who she is at her core.

    Quotes
    • “I genuinely believe that so many things along the path were so divine in their timing and just bringing me exactly to where I belong. And so, now even when things are getting a little rocky, I know that it's either a part of preparing me for the next level or it's maybe even just testing me like how bad do you really want to do this? (8:48-9:08)

    • “And I think the part that really hurt me the most was that: did I really hate myself so much that I would do something like this and then eventually ruin my body?” (14:08-14:19)

    • “So, I think it was like viewing food differently, viewing my body for what it could do rather than solely what it looked like, which is what I had done forever. And realizing like, hey, these legs are strong. And what they look like does not matter.” (14:58-15:14)

    • “Well, okay, just change your thoughts. Sure. If I could have done that 10 years ago, I would have. I would have, but we have these deep rooted beliefs that are driving everything. And when we can shift that belief, that's when everything changes, and the behavior will resolve itself.” (17:32-17:48)

    • “Yeah, your higher self is you. It's you at your core. It's you without all of the conditioning and B.S. and stuff that society has put on you. We're always trying to strive for this better version. Like, I have to do this and that, and this, and drink 100 ounces of water and do all this stuff, and I'll be my best self. And no, it's remembering who you are, at your core, your true self. And that is the highest possible version of you.” (21:05-21:32)

    • “There are things that come up through our whole life and childhood that are stuck with us. And we don't even know they're there. Because our brain is telling us, no, they're good, don't worry about that. It's over, move on. And so, I like to bring my clients back to the scene in a crime essentially, and we get to move in and love that part of them. And that is what starts to do the unraveling.” (22:09-22:32)
