  • 138. Express Tip #69: Focus on the Good

Welcome to this week’s Entrepreneur Express Tip in 5 minutes or less! Today we are sharing some inspiration about focusing on the good! When you focus on the good, the good turns to great, but when you focus on the bad, the bad turns to worse. This is such a simple reminder about mindset, positive energy, self-awareness, and mindfulness that relates back to focusing on the good. Good turns to great and when you stay in the positive lane you will find that these positive and happy things in life will multiply and evolve. However, when you focus on the bad, those things tend to spiral and become overwhelming. As the year comes to an end and the holidays approach, it’s always a great reminder to focus on the good and watch it turn to great!

  • 136. Express Tip #68: Mapping Out Your Dream Team

Welcome to this week’s Entrepreneur Express Tip in 5 minutes or less! Today we are going to do some visualization and I want you to dream bigger than your fears by painting a picture of your dream company. The best way to do this is to map out your dream organizational chart – what does your dream team look like? Put everything on your dream organizational chart that you can think of – map out the boxes and lines and everything you want. I want you to look at is your existing employee count right now and multiply that number of employees by five and then multiple your existing count by 10. I want you to see if you multiplied your employee count by 5x or 10x what it would like. Now, we can bridge the two and I want you to see your dream organizational chart and what your organization employee base would look like if you multiplied it by five or 10. If you look at your dream organizational chart, how do you need to multiply your company to get to your dream operational goals? This is a really good exercise to do, especially in the fourth quarter of the year. This is a great way to set goals and write numbers down. It gives you a benchmark of where you are now and where you ultimately want to go.

  • 135. Episode #68: Nani Ferreira-Mathews of Thread Coffee Roasters

For today’s episode of the Entrepreneur Evolution Podcast, we are joined by Nani Ferreira-Mathews – Owner and Sales and Marketing Director of Thread Coffee Roasters. Nani has been working in specialty coffee since 2012. She started as a barista in a small Brooklyn coffee shop that featured Crop to Cup coffees. There she learned to pour latte art and how to properly brew coffee. She went onto roasting, production, and education for Joe Coffee and Nobletree in NYC. She was the Lead Educator and Sales and Marketing Director for Unique Coffee Roasters in Staten Island, NY. In 2017, she moved to Baltimore, MD to work with Woodberry Kitchen, Artifact Coffee, and Bird in Hand as coffee director and manager.

Since becoming an owner at Thread Coffee Roasters in 2018, Nani has grown this local business immensely. She has helped Thread to achieve co-operative ownership of their green coffee importer and recently received the high honor of B-Corp certification. Her dedicated work towards a more transparent, equitable and sustainable coffee industry has been recognized on an international level in recent years and has brought attention to Thread Coffee Roasters and Baltimore City on a global scale. Thread was named Best Coffee in Maryland by Food and Wine Magazine in 2019, and has had several notable mentions in Bon Appetit, Sprudge, Daily Coffee News and Roast Magazine. In Baltimore City, they offer free home delivery and have innovatively worked to create a zero-waste CSC (Community Supported Coffee) Coffee Refill Program. Thread’s importing practices have a carbon neutral goal for 2022, which will be achieved by offsetting carbon emissions through meticulous tracking at the farm and shipping level then offset by supporting and funding sustainability measures, such as shade grown coffee farms and increased biodiversity and soil health programs at the farm level. Nani has already achieved so much, but isn’t stopping anytime soon. She continues to make an impact and push for a more sustainable and equitable industry, helping to both facilitate a conversation and put into practice changes that are long overdue. When not working, Nani is an activist, writer and musician.

  • 134. Express Tip #67: The Four Stages for Setting a Process

Welcome to this week’s Entrepreneur Express Tip! Today’s topic is around setting a process. Here’s the biggest reminder that I want you to think about: you will always be outgrowing your process in your company. That’s what happens when you are scaling your company. Today I want to share with you the four stages in really perfecting your process. Number one, you form. Number two, it storms. Number three, it’s a norm. Number four, it performs. It starts with forming a process and through the storm it will turn into a norm and eventually perform for you. There are different processes for so many facets of your business and these four stages must be remembered when setting and perfecting a process.

  • 132. Express Tip #66: What Have You Outgrown?

Welcome to this week’s Entrepreneur Express Tip! I want you to think about what you need to outgrow right now. What are you holding onto that no longer serves you and you are no longer serving? What do you need to outgrow right now? It is okay to outgrow things and as entrepreneurs we outgrow vendors, associations, coaches, team members and many more things. Outgrowing things happens and that is okay. I want you to stop and really think about things you might not need in your life anymore because your time is precious and valuable. We need to be as productive as possible and participate in things that are truly the highest and best use of our time - and also make us feel good! We need to live in our genius zone as entrepreneurs. I’m giving you grace and courage to make those decisions to say you have outgrown something. Keep evolving, I am so proud of you.

  • 131. Episode #66: UNITS Portable Storage with Peter Burstein

For today’s interview on the Entrepreneur Evolution Podcast we talk to Peter Burstein, president and owner of UNITS Portable Storage in Maryland. Peter’s path to owning his own business is a true testament to his entrepreneurial mindset. As a previous real estate attorney, the idea of our possessions and spaces has always been in the forefront of his surroundings. Over two years ago, Peter opened UNITS Portable Storage. For him a big part of opening a storage company had to do with being locally-owned, as a part of the community, one where you would talk to someone local instead of a national call center representative. Understanding the importance of Maryland’s geographical location for the purpose of containers and storage was a crucial aspect that made his business set up for success. Tune into this episode to learn more about Peter, UNITS Portable Storage, and the pathway to entrepreneurship.

  • 130. Express Tip #65: Common Small Business Owner Problems

Welcome to this week’s Entrepreneur Express Tip! In today’s tip we are talking about seven common business owner problems. Number one is lack of cash flow. This is a big challenge with business owners and I'm sure you’ve been there - and if you haven’t been there, you will be there one day. You’re always going to go through different growth stages of cash flow management and it’s important to have the right tools and resources in place (even ones you don’t know are out there yet) to assist you through the various stages of your business. Number two is marketing and advertising. This is about knowing where to spend your money and the right resources you should engage to help you grow. Oftentimes marketing vendors will promise they are a magic wand and it can disappoint. It’s important to have somebody on your side and looking out for you - somebody who can guide you to meet your objectives and goals for your business. Number three is managing your time. This one is big because time management for business owners is tough and your time is golden. You need to make sure you are using the right tools to manage your time so you can be the most effective in your business. Number four is performing administrative work. Leadership is getting things done through others and you need to have the right person on your team that you are able to delegate tasks that you shouldn't be doing to, like administrative work. Hiring an assistant is crucial for you and your business. Number five is hiring and retaining top talent. This goes hand in hand with delegating and hiring an assistant. Right now, hiring is the biggest challenge and pain point for entrepreneurs. If you do not have an interview process or a hiring process, you need to establish one. Number six is providing the different management benefits. As a business owner, you need to know what benefits to offer, be able to navigate through all the regulations, and understand what a benefits package looks like. I am an objective soundboard for you with the resources and a network that can help you. You don’t need to make decisions by yourself, I can help you. You don’t have to do this alone and I'm just here to take you to the next level.
