  • Exit Readiness: The Four Phases of Preparing to Sell Your Business

When you look at your whole business through the lens of exit readiness, it can feel like everything needs to change at once. Your systems need work, your team needs more ownership, your processes need documenting, and somewhere in the middle of all that, you still have a business to run. So where do you even begin?

In my 1:1 Exit Readiness work, I use four phases: Understand, Prioritize, Build & Implement, and Prove & Prepare. They take you from seeing how dependent your business is on you today to building a transferable business someone else can confidently take over. Whether you’re preparing to sell your business now or five to ten years from now, this gives you an order to work in.

For each phase I share what we do, why it matters from a buyer’s perspective, and one question to ask yourself about your own business.

We start with a Founder Dependency, so you can see where founder dependency shows up: which decisions, knowledge and relationships still depend on you. From there, you’ll learn how to decide which risks matter most to a buyer, and what not to work on yet. I walk through how to know when a process is actually done: documented, assigned, implemented, tested, adopted and measured. You’ll hear how a Decision Record captures the why behind your decisions, so the next owner has the context. Then we step back with a Founder Absence Test and measure how much less the business depends on you.

Exit readiness isn’t something you switch on when you decide to sell. It’s something you build into the business long before the transaction happens. The earlier you start, the more time you have to address the gaps without the pressure of a sale coming.

If you’re looking at an exit or business transition in the next one to three years, I’d love to talk with you. Book a business connection call and we’ll look at where your business is today, what you’re working toward and what your next steps are.

  • Succession Planning | A Business Exit Strategy That Builds Leaders

When business owners hear succession planning, they tend to think about the end. Retirement, selling the business, passing it on to family or to the team. Those are all great forms of succession, and I think we can start having this conversation a lot sooner.

Before you can decide who takes over your business, you have to know whether your business is capable of being taken over. A succession plan on paper doesn’t make a business transferable. Your successor still needs to know how the business works, why your biggest client is with you, how decisions get made, where the processes live and who leads the team when you’re not there.

In this episode I talk about why succession planning can be a leadership issue first, and why it needs to start long before you’re ready to step away.

    You’ll learn how to:

*Spot what stops working when you stop showing up
*Look at your business the way a successor would, from client relationships to how decisions get made
*Build leadership in your team now, so someone else is ready to step in
*Give yourself more options, whether you sell, pass it to family, hand it to your team or step away from the day to day

Whoever takes over, the foundation is the same: clear leadership, documented processes, knowledge out of your head and relationships that belong to the business. The earlier you start, the more choices you have. Let’s be proactive instead of reactive.

Not sure how transferable your business is right now? Take my quiz, Is Your Business Worth Buying? It looks at founder dependency, systems, leadership, reporting, transferability and readiness, so you get a clear picture of where you and your business stand today.

  • The 7 Systems Every Business Needs Before It's Ready to Sell

The goal of preparing a business for sale is to build a business that can operate, grow, and deliver value without the founder holding everything together. That’s where business systems become critical. They reduce founder dependency, improve business transferability, and help increase business value while giving you more freedom now.

You’ll learn the seven systems that create a stronger foundation for exit readiness: sales, client onboarding, service delivery, finance, marketing, team, and operations. We’ll look at what a buyer wants to see in each area, from a documented sales process and consistent onboarding to clean financial reporting, reliable lead generation, capable team members, and organized business operations.

You’ll also see how these systems connect. Marketing feeds sales. Sales feeds onboarding. Onboarding feeds service delivery. Delivery drives finance. Your team supports the business, while operations holds the infrastructure together. That connection is what turns a founder-dependent business into one that can run without you.

If selling your business is somewhere in your future, this is the work that makes the difference. If you’re not ready to sell yet, these same systems can give you more freedom, stronger business operations, and greater confidence in how your company runs.

Start by asking one question across all seven areas: does this run because of me, or does it run through the business?

Ready to see where your business stands? Take the Business Worth Buying Quiz and identify where to focus next.

  • How to Create SOPs for Your Business: What to Document First Before You Sell

If your business can't operate without you, your SOPs may be the missing piece between running a successful company and building one someone else could confidently own.

Creating standard operating procedures isn't about documenting every task or producing manuals nobody reads. It's about building business systems that move critical knowledge out of your head and into processes your team can confidently follow.

    Where should you start?

In this episdoes I break down how to create practical SOPs, what information to include and which processes deserve your attention first. From client onboarding to financial reporting, you'll learn how to identify the operational gaps that create founder dependency and make your business harder to transfer.

    You'll discover how to:

    • Create clear, actionable procedures your team will actually use.
    • Identify the three to five critical processes to document first.
    • Record, write, test and maintain your SOPs.
    • Strengthen business operations while preparing for a future sale.

This is where documentation becomes more than an administrative task. Stronger processes support business transferability by making it easier for someone else to understand, manage and eventually own what you've built.

Whether you're planning to sell in two years or ten, exit readiness starts with the operational decisions you're making today. You don't need to document everything at once. You need to start with the processes that protect your business's value and reduce its reliance on you.

Ready to get started? Download the free guide, 10 Essential Processes Every Business Should Have Before Selling, complete with an SOP template to help you put your documentation into action.

  • Could You Sell Your Business Someday? 5 Things You Should Be Doing Now

You don’t need to be ready to sell your business to start building one that someone else could actually buy.

Maybe selling isn’t part of your plan right now. Maybe it’s something you’ve thought about in passing, or maybe you simply like knowing that the option could be there someday.

But if you did decide to sell your business five or ten years from now, would you be building it differently today?

In this episode, I’m sharing five things you can start thinking about now to increase your business value and create a company that isn’t completely dependent on you to operate.

We’re talking about founder dependency, the strength of your business systems, and the things that contribute to business transferability when someone else eventually needs to step into what you’ve built.

Preparing to sell your business isn’t only about what happens when you’re ready to leave. Your exit readiness is shaped by decisions you’re making years before a potential sale ever happens.

The goal isn’t to build your business as though you’re constantly preparing to walk away from it. It’s to build something strong enough to give you options.

That means looking at where the knowledge lives, how decisions get made, how much the business relies on you personally, and whether someone else could realistically step in and continue operating what you’ve created.

Even if you never sell your business, doing this work can create a stronger company today, one with more independence, more value, and more freedom for you as the owner.

If you do eventually decide to sell your business, you’ll be starting from a very different position because you’ve spent years intentionally building a business worth buying.

  • Business Exit Planning: Are Canadian Business Owners Ready for the Wave?

What happens when thousands of Canadian business owners reach retirement age but the businesses they've spent decades building aren't ready to operate without them? The coming wave of business transitions is predictable. The question is whether owners are preparing for it.

Business exit planning isn't something that begins when you call a broker. It begins years earlier, in the decisions you're making about your operations, leadership, systems, and relationships. If everything still depends on you, a future buyer or successor may be taking on far more risk than they realize.

We look at why so many owners struggle to prepare, from finding the right buyer or successor to understanding business valuation and addressing founder dependency. A profitable business can still be difficult to transfer when its knowledge, client relationships, and decision-making remain concentrated in one person.

You'll also hear why “I'll deal with it later” doesn't necessarily buy you more time. Whether you're considering business succession, succession planning Canada, or a small business exit strategy, readiness is built through decisions not simply through the passage of time.

The good news is that you don't need to have a buyer, a timeline, or a complete exit plan today. You can start by documenting what lives in your head, strengthening your team, improving operational visibility, and making your business more transferable. That's how you create freedom, flexibility, and options for the future.

If you're a Canadian business owner wondering whether your company is ready for what comes next, take the Is Your Business Worth Buying? quiz. It's a practical place to understand where your business stands and what deserves your attention next.

  • What Buyers Actually Value: Business Operations & Exit Planning

What if your business looks successful on paper but a buyer would struggle to take it over?

That’s the question behind business operations and exit planning. Revenue, profitability, and strong client relationships matter, but they don’t tell the whole story. The real question is whether the business can continue to perform when the founder is no longer the person making every decision, solving every problem, and keeping everything moving.

This conversation reframes business worth around what exists beyond the founder. You’ll learn why founder dependency can create risk, how business systems and documented processes make knowledge transferable, and why having a team is not the same as having a business that can operate without you.

We also look at leadership and delegation, meaningful reporting, KPIs, and visibility. Strong business operations give a future owner the information they need to understand what is happening, where the risks are, and what needs attention. That clarity reduces uncertainty and uncertainty can affect business worth.

The goal isn’t to create paperwork for the sake of paperwork. It’s to build business transferability through practical systems, capable leaders, documented knowledge, and better decision-making. This is where business exit planning becomes more than something you do when you’re ready to sell. It becomes part of building a stronger business today.

Whether your future involves a sale, succession, stepping away as CEO, or simply having more freedom, the work starts long before the transaction. Look at what happens when you step back. What still moves? What stops? What only you know?

Better business operations don’t just make a company easier to run. They create options, reduce risk, and help build a business worth buying.

  • The Mindset Shift That Gets You Out of the Day-to-Day in Your Business

A mindset shift is often the first step toward building a business that can operate without you. Sometimes the biggest thing keeping your business dependent on you isn't your team, your systems, or your technology. It's the way you've trained the business to rely on you.

If you're still the person making every important decision, solving every unexpected problem, stepping into client relationships, or answering questions your team should be able to handle, you've unintentionally created founder dependency.

And changing that takes more than delegating a few tasks.

In this episode, I'm talking about the founder mindset that has to change as your business grows and why moving from operator to owner means changing the way you respond when something needs to be done.

Instead of asking, "How do I fix this?" we need to start asking different questions.

What information is missing? What hasn't been documented? Where is decision-making authority unclear? What does someone else need to know so this problem doesn't automatically come back to me next time?

That's where your entrepreneurial mindset begins to evolve from solving today's problems to building a business capable of solving tomorrow's without you.

We'll also look at what happens when you start giving your team the knowledge, systems, authority, and confidence they need to make decisions independently and why that matters for exit readiness long before you're actually thinking about selling your business.

Here's the question I want you to consider:

If you disappeared from your business for 30 days, what would break?

Which decisions would stop? Which clients would immediately ask for you? What knowledge would disappear with you?

Those answers tell you a lot about how transferable your business really is.

The goal isn't to remove yourself overnight. It's to intentionally build a business that can continue beyond you, whether you eventually pursue a business exit strategy, transfer leadership, or simply want more freedom from the day-to-day.

  • How to Sell a Business: Is Your Business Ready to Run Without You?

How to sell a business starts long before you ever speak to a buyer. If you stepped away tomorrow, would everything keep working?

A successful business is not automatically a transferable business. If sales, client relationships, operations, decisions, and knowledge depend on the founder, you may have created a job rather than an asset. That founder dependency can affect exit readiness, business value, and your options at exit.

Learning how to sell a business means getting specific about where the dependency exists. Are you the only person who can close a sale, solve a problem, make a key decision, or manage an important relationship? What knowledge lives in your head, inbox, or spreadsheets?

This is where how to sell a business becomes less about finding a buyer and more about building something a buyer can understand, operate, and trust. Documenting business operations creates structure and consistency. Consistency makes the business more transferable.

Your team matters too. If every decision comes back to you, ask whether people have the authority and business systems they need to act independently. Start small: move one decision into the business and give someone ownership. The goal is to create a sustainable business that works with you, not because of you.

Strong client and supplier relationships are valuable, but how to sell a business also means asking whether those relationships belong to the company or only exist because of the founder. Building relationships across the organization reduces risk and strengthens business value.

Every documented process, delegated decision, stronger relationship, and clearer system improves exit readiness and gives you more freedom today. Maybe you sell, bring in a partner, or simply work fewer hours.

If you’re wondering how to sell a business, start with a better question: what would make this business worth buying?

  • Business Exit Strategy: Why You Should Start Before You're Ready to Sell (Trailer)

A business exit strategy isn't something you create when you're finally ready to sell. It starts years earlier with how you build your business today.

Building a successful business is one thing. Building one that can thrive without you and that someone else could eventually own, is something different.

I grew up watching my parents build our family business, and years later, I watched them make the decision to sell it. Seeing that transition up close showed me that leaving a business is about so much more than a financial transaction. Your identity, relationships, knowledge, team, and years of work are all wrapped up in what you've built.

I'm Amy Sussex, a Canadian Business Exit Strategist helping founders build businesses that are ready for whatever comes next.

And there's one question I want more business owners to ask:

What would happen to your business if you stepped away tomorrow?

Could your team make decisions without you? Would your clients still be well looked after? Could the business keep running? If someone wanted to buy it, would there be a transferable business to purchase or a job that's still dependent on its founder?

That's what The Exit Ready Business is about.

Each week, we'll talk about exit planning, business exit planning, founder dependency, business systems, business transferability, business value, succession planning, and what it really takes to build a company someone else could successfully operate and eventually buy.

You'll also hear conversations with Canadian founders and experts about the realities of selling a business, preparing for a business transition, and the decisions you can make today to increase business value, even if selling isn't on your radar for years.

You don't have to be ready to leave your business to start making it exit ready.

You can start building it as an asset today, one that gives you more freedom now, more value over time, and more options when you're ready for whatever comes next.

If that's the kind of business you want to build, subscribe to The Exit Ready Business and join me each week.
