With those words, I immediately felt a surge of energy come into my body that I had come to recognize from many exorcism sessions. A demon was getting in the way—I could feel it.

“Tell me the truth of what happened to my participant,” I told the manifested demon. 

“Close your eyes and I’ll show you,” he responded.

I began to feel a tingling sensation I recognized from when I had experienced an exorcism. Except during my exorcism the tingling sensation moved up and off my head—this one was starting at my head and trying to move down.

We learn a lot of self-hate from religion. We call ourselves worms and dirty sinners. We talk about God as though he holds his nose around us—as though it is a chore for him to love us. We demean ourselves when we pray, hoping to gain a trophy for being the most self-debasing person in the room. We do this all thinking that it’s humility, when in reality it’s bondage.

“I sense the Holy Spirit is singing a song over you. Do you hear it?” I asked my participant, who had been going through an incredibly difficult time.

They closed their eyes and listened for a moment. A few seconds later, they began to sing not just the song that was in my head—but, specifically, the bridge—the exact part of the song that was in my head.

“This may not work when you leave this room,” I often tell my participants. “I don’t know how to explain it, but there’s a special anointing on these moments. God knows I need him to speak in this way to help you heal. We’re going to ask him to speak in your imagination, but if you don’t see anything, there are other ways he’ll go about making himself known.

“A Christian can’t have a demon,” an irritated college student told me during my lecture. This wasn’t the first time I had heard this incredibly damaging statement, which is often made by people who have never done an exorcism. There is no such statement made in Scripture. There are some passages used to endorse such a conclusion, but these passages are more about people openly worshiping demons—they’re not necessarily about people having demons.

Whenever one particular demon manifested, all I had to do was touch the person’s forehead, and it would be in such great pain that it could be knocked out cold if I kept my hand there long enough. After being mocked by a different demon for a while, I picked up a guitar and began to sing a worship song, causing it intense pain.
