  • Episode 65: Dawn by Octavia Butler
The Fake Ass Book Club is back this week to review "Dawn" by Octavia Butler! Octavia Butler was an American science fiction writer, one of the best known among the few African-American women in the field. In her book, "humanity is decimated, and Earth has been all but destroyed by nuclear war. A black American woman, Lilith Iyapo, awakes among frightening aliens called “Oankali,” who offer humanity a devil's bargain: they will “save” humanity from extinction by taking human DNA, blending it with their own, and creating a stronger hybrid species. Lilith, the main charter, immediately becomes afraid that they will rape her, or remove her eggs without her permission, but they assure her, “No Oankali will touch you without your consent.” However, “consent” becomes an increasingly muddied concept as the novel goes on." (https://blog.pshares.org/rape-and-the-ravages-of-colonialism-in-octavia-spencers-dawn/). As the ladies navigate this story of survival and humanity’s seemingly inevitable evolution, they have so many questions. If human evolution was dependent on their willingness to merge DNA with aliens, would you do it to survive? Would staying 100% human be that important? Would our humanity be compromised? While noting the similarities between colonialism and Oankali's quest to assimilate humans to a new way of life, Moni and Kat ponder how they would handle an alien invasion. Tune in to hear what they had to say!! (As always, this episode contains spoilers!) • Episode 59: Our Father the Netflix Documentary
Welcome back to the Fake Ass Book Club!! Moni and Kat tackle the Netflix documentary, Our Father, where "a fertility specialist in Indiana named Dr. Donald Cline inseminated dozens of patients with his own sperm, without their knowledge or consent." Sooo cringy and unethical, GROSS!! The chatty ladies were so eager to talk this week that they forgot to do the typical dedication but did manage to shout @weliketopardi for their colab with Newfields (IMA) over Father's Day/Juneteenth weekend. Their conversation centers around the lack of accountabilty and straight up white supremist gall (aka systems in place to protect him such as Indiana laws or lack thereof, and people in power), Dr. Cline had to pull off his scheme. Classic narcisist! Kat also does a "white people" PSA and asks to be elected as the new "Black leader" so she can approve reparations and universal income in the US. Ha! The overall feeling was disgust and disbelief as they made the journey through this stranger than fiction story! Buckle up, it's a doozy!! *_Dedication: *@weliketopardi Thanks for supprting black businessess! Also shout out to all the wonderful dad's out there!! We love and need you!!! The F.A.B. ladies are back this week with special guest and fan of the show, Shannon aka @superchefbarbie! She also happens to be Kat's first cousin. Shannon shares why she’s a true fan the show, and the cousins geek out for one of their favorite TV series, Star Trek. Moni and Shannon discuss the problematic musical, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", and why they still love it. Their conversation included themes such as the importance of multi-culturalism, the problematic nature of colonialism, gender roles and relationships. On a lighter note, Moni's brother, (known for eating all the mashed potatoes at Sunday dinner that one time), recently roasted Kat on FaceTime in front of Kat's mom. She was NOT pleased!! lol Finally, Kat and Shannon recall a childhood memory in Nashville when Kat's bike “accidentally” veered into a cesspool, (a poop hole in the ground aka country sewer) ruining her brand new jeans from Target.
