Rick Gehman is joined by Kyle Porter and Greg DuCharme to recap Friday's action at The Country Club.

A second round 3-under 67 has catapulted world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler into the co-lead of the 122nd U.S. Open as the afternoon wave is set to begin play. Struggling out of the gates on Friday, the Texan caught fire in the middle of his back nine and played a four-hole stretch in 4 under, punctuated by an eagle on the par-5 14th.

Scheffler now finds his name alongside Nick Hardy who has signed for rounds of 69-68. Four other men occupy the top of the leaderboard and have yet to kick off their second rounds, including four-time major champion Rory McIlroy. Hot off the successful defense of his RBC Canadian Open title, the Northern Irishman was nearly flawless en route to what was a bogey-free first round ... through 17 holes.

McIlroy will look to push past Scheffler with a strong second round as will those just a few strokes behind. Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris and Max Homa were all able to play themselves into red figures with their Thursday performances and will hope for more of the same this afternoon. With plenty of action yet to unfold, these titans of the game are sure to make their claim on this championship.

Rick Gehman, Kyle Porter and Greg DuCharme recap and react to Thursday's action at The Country Club.

The 122nd U.S. Open is underway Thursday with the pre-tournament favorite among the clubhouse leaders after the morning session. Rory McIlroy, who went off at 10-1 to win the national championship per Caesars Sportsbook, shot a 3-under 67 to top the morning wave, going bogey-free for 17 holes until the last as he fell back into a tie for the lead at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

McIlroy began his quest for major No. 5 with a bang playing alongside 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele in a dynamite pairing. Neither is under par after their first rounds, though Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Will Zalatoris and Adam Scott are notable names sitting two back of the co-leaders.

Hot off his second PGA Tour victory of the season and 21st win overall, new favorite Rory McIlroy will look to get off on the right foot just as he did at the 2022 PGA Championship.

The Northern Irishman commanded the first-round lead at Southern Hills after firing a 5-under 65 and will kick off his U.S. Open at 7:40 a.m.ET alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Xander Schauffele. This trio is one of a few notable groupings off in the morning hours at The Country Club.
