Becoming a spiritually mature believer takes time and requires that you consistently grow, learn and apply God’s Word. This is how you come to know God. “Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ” (Eph 4:15) Spiritual maturity is relative and dependent on the filling of the Holy Spirit and the content of the Word of God in your soul. Learning God’s Word requires academic discipline, concentration, and repetition taught by a well-qualified pastor. The advance to spiritual maturity is a progression through self-esteem and spiritual autonomy. Spiritual autonomy is relying on God’s Word for direction, not the advice of people. Self-esteem brings contentment and confidence knowing God has a plan for you. “Godliness is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment” (1 Tim 6:6). Mental contentment, being satisfied with where God has you and what He has you doing is stability in life. This is the key to advancing to spiritual maturity.

You face three enemies in your spiritual life: the world, your flesh, and the devil. You live in the devil’s world, and it is full of temptations, illusions, and false promises. The world offers you security and happiness, but it can’t deliver. “The world is passing away; and also, its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever” (1 John 2:17). Your flesh, the sin nature, tempts you in your areas of strength and weakness. Spiritual growth counters the temptations. Satan’s objective is to avoid going to the Lake of Fire. He is trying to create a utopia on Earth through organized religion and internationalism. His tactics are beyond our comprehension, so we must consistently learn and apply God’s World, or we will fall victim to his plan. “So that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes” (2 Cor 2:11).

Spirituality is absolute. At any moment in time, you are either filled with the Holy Spirit or controlled by your sin nature. Your volition decides which controls your life. The Christian life must be lived with the supernatural power God gives you—the filling of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word, the Bible, which is “alive and powerful” (Heb 4:12). Spirituality is not avoiding some pet taboo such as not drinking or not smoking. Spirituality is a relationship with God the Holy Spirit. At the moment of salvation, you were sealed and indwelled by the Holy Spirit. Spirituality occurs when you are filled with the Holy Spirit (no unconfessed sin in your life). “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ (be filled with the Holy Spirit) and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts” (Rom 13:14). Spirituality is related to the filling of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual maturity is related to the filling of the Holy Spirit and the content of the Word of God in your soul.

“Be on the alert because your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Pet 5:8). The world and the flesh are both opposing you and so is the devil. But the devil won’t fool with you if you can’t get past the lures of the world and the lusts of the flesh. You can neutralize yourself. If you ignore the instructions of the Bible, you are susceptible to deception and Satan is the master deceiver. Submit to God’s Word and you’ll be able to overcome the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil. “Fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Prov 1:7). But if you let your emotions dictate your thoughts and actions rather than a divine viewpoint, you are being deceived.

You were bought out of the slave market of sin and given freedom in Jesus Christ. What will you do with the freedom Christ provides you? “Serve wholeheartedly serving the Lord, not people, because you know the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slaves or free (Eph 6:7-8). You must choose to serve Jesus Christ. It is voluntary. “You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve” (Matt 4:10). “In whatever you do in word or in deed, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ” (Col 3:17). Putting into practice the Word of God you’ve learned is to know the love of Christ. “And to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge so that you might be filled with the fullness of God” (Eph 3:19). Jesus Christ asks you to demonstrate your love to Him by being faithful. Remember, you are in full-time Christian service.

You were bought and paid for by means of the spiritual death of Jesus Christ on the cross. He took your place. He took your sin and God the Father gave you His righteousness at the moment of salvation. God the Holy Spirit lives inside of you. “The Helper the Holy Spirit home the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you” (John 14:26). He gives us supernatural spiritual strength to survive the assaults we face each day. The Holy Spirit is your energy, your power. He enlightened you and encourages you in your spiritual journey. The claim of ownership by Jesus Christ is the basis for eternal appreciation and for eternal worship. “He set the seal of ownership upon us.” (2 Col 1:22).

We are to become Christ-like. We are to learn and use God’s Word and grow up spiritually. “To the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ” (Eph 4:13). Spiritual humility is you depending on God’s resources, power and grace provisions for you. “Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord” (James 4:10). The humility of the soul is you constantly evaluating yourself in the light of God’s Word. Humility as a way of thinking must become a way of life. The humility profile, “To sum it all up, be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted and humble in spirit” (1 Pet 3:18). Passions must not become priorities, or you will lose focus. “We are to be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of our prayer. Above all keep loving one another earnestly since love can cover a multitude of sins” (1 Pet 4:7-8).

Accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and you have a new start, a new life in Christ. “If any man is in Christ he is a new creation. Old things are passed away and behold, all things become new” (2 Cor 5:17). This simple act of faith expressed in silent prayer is the most significant decision you could ever make. Because when you do, you are born again and this is when your permanent relationship with God begins. When you believe in Jesus Christ you’re given the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and sustain you. Faith alone in Christ alone is how we get saved. “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). You have so many assets and so much power available to you. Use them this year and fulfill God’s plan for your life.

God has given you the divine assets of the Bible, the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the ministry of a well-qualified pastor. Use these to live and “be in holy conduct” awaiting the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. “Since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of person ought you to be in holy conduct” (2 Pet 3:11). This takes applying problem-solving devices. “By this, we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep His mandates” (1 John 5:2). Your job is to fulfill the commission of why God left you here—to re-present Him and hasten the end of this sin-infected universe. “The Lord is not willing that any should perish” (2 Pet 3:9).
