Hello beautiful people! This is an episode on the TEDx talk by Shaolin Monk Master Shi Heng Yi where he talks about the 5 hindrances to self-mastery. In his talk he shares his wisdom regarding personal development, and continuous improvement.
There's 5 obstacles (or 'hindrances', as he calls them) to self-mastery.
The hindrances are the following:
1. Sensual desire (sight/touch/taste/smell/hearing) = Am I addicted?
2. Ill will / aversion = Am I feeling a negative emotion?
3. Dullness / heaviness = Am I unmotivated?
4. Restlessness = Is my mind jumping from though to thought?
5. Sceptical doubt = Am I indecisive?
Whenever you find yourself facing such an obstacle, you can use the following strategy (RAIN) to keep moving forward;
1. Recognise which one you're experiencing
2. Accept that's what you're experiencing
3. Investigate why you're experiencing it
4. Non-identify with that experience: 'I am not the body, I am not the mind, I am not my emotion.'
