For this new episode of our podcast, our two guests are Johannesburg-based artist Zara Julius and regular contributor to The Funambulist Zoé Samudzi. We discuss the contents and forms of A Funeral For..., a book by Zara in collaboration with Zoé about land, indigeneity, death, and sound in southern Africa (in particular South Africa and Namibia) and, beyond, in the spaces of global Blackness.

La diaspora tamoule de l'Îlam en France a été centrale dans l'élaboration de ce podcast et il n'est pas un hasard qu'il s'agisse du troisième épisode sur cet imaginaire des luttes (cf. l'épisode avec Apinaya K sur l'histoire de l'Îlam et celui avec Vishni Francis Jeyaratnam à propos du projet National Museum of Eelam). Cette centralité est un double mouvement: celui d'enrichir l'imaginaire politique antiraciste/anticolonial en France a travers l'exemple de la resistance eela tamoule (en particulier a travers l'organisation des Tigres de Libération de l'Îlam Tamoul) et imaginer la possibilité de solidarités envers une lutte toujours en cours. In this conversation, recorded on March 20th 2025, we speak with Dawn Marie Paley. With Raquel Gutiérrez Aguilar, she is the co-founder of Ojalá, a digital weekly dedicated to journalism and analysis that aims to foster a common sense of dissidence. Dawn speaks about her motives for launching Ojalá, born from a broader lack of critical leftist reportage on leftist regimes in Latin America, specifically in the English-speaking world. She discusses the role of feminism and autonomous indigenous organizing to these struggles, to the work of Ojalá, and to the recent marches across Mexico for March 8th, the first International Women’s Day under president Claudia Sheinbaum.

Cette conversation, enregistrée le 14 décembre 2024, présente les différentes facons dont les habitant*es du quartier Alma Gare à Roubaix s'organisent contre la destruction de leur lieu de vie. Véritable exemple de quartier auto-conçu à la fin des années 70, Alma Gare est aujourd'hui la cible de la spéculation gentrificatrice de la mairie. Florian Vertriest, l'une des figures du combat, nous parle de l'histoire du quartier, de ses habitant*es, et de la manière dont celleux-ci pensent et pratiquent des stratégies pour contrer ce projet et ses démolitions.

Quelques mois après que la Révolution bangladeshie ait poussé le gouvernement à la fuite, nous parlons avec Charza Shahabuddin de l'imaginaire des luttes de chaque membre de la diaspora bangladeshie en France, en particulier la guerre de libération de 1971 pour se séparer du Pakistan. A ces deux grands pans de cet imaginaire, nous n'oublions pas les luttes des peuples Avidashis (autochtones) dans le Sud-Est du Bangladesh.

Charza Shahabuddin est doctorante associée au Centre d'Etudes Sud-Asiatiques et Himalayennes de l'EHESS. Elle est également enseignante à Sciences Po et l'INALCO. Son sujet de recherche porte sur la production de normes islamiques au Bangladesh.

Certes la diaspora kazakhe en France ne compte sans doute pas plus que quelques centaines de membres, celle-ci se joint néanmoins aux autres diasporas centre-asiatiques (kirghize, ouzbèke, tadjike et turkmène), et meme à d'autres ayant survécu au colonialisme de l'Empire russe, puis à celui de l'Union des républiques socialistes soviétiques dans une histoire contenant des moments communs (la Grande Révolte centre-asiatique de 1916 par exemple) mais aussi de nombreuses spécificités. Dans cet épisode, nous parlons avec Dilda Ramazan de l'importance de différencier Kazakh·e·s e Kazakhstanais·e·s, de leurs resistances anticoloniales, des structures ethnocentriques de l'Etat kazakhstanais, ainsi que de la vision centre-asiatique qu'elle propose en tant que curatrice. Dilda Ramazan est curatrice et doctorante à Sorbonne Université. Sa recherche porte sur les artistes contemporains d'Asie centrale. Elle fait partie des collectifs DAVRA, Beyond the post-soviet (Btps) et MATA.

This conversation between Shivangi Mariam Raj and Hafsa Kanjwal focuses on the affect and mythologies deployed by India to condense Kashmir into a landscape of desire, into a territory of control, on slow and invisibilized forms of violence embedded in infrastructures of assimilation, and on the complex forms of statecrafting under successive client regimes that have contributed to the strengthening of India’s settler-colonial project in Kashmir today. We also discuss methods of resistance practiced by the peoples of Jammu and Kashmir and how they help us think about liberation in the global landscape of postcolonial colonialism.
