The Future of HIV Care

More than half of people living with HIV in the U.S. are over the age of 50, and within a few years it will likely be more than two thirds, if we're not there already. You probably already know first-hand the challenges of adapting and evolving care to meet the needs of a patient population that is older than we envisioned back when we formed a lot of the HIV care systems we now rely on.

This month, Meredith Greene, M.D., joins us to talk about that adaptation and evolution by discussing her path to becoming a leading HIV specialist and geriatrician, her experience creating the distinguished Golden Compass clinic in San Francisco, and her efforts to apply that knowledge and experience in her current role as an associate professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a scientist at the Center for Aging Research.

The world's largest HIV-focused meeting took place in late July — and as ever, the science came fast and furious, to the tune of more than 2,500 presentations. When a conference is this large, distilling what's likely to have the greatest import for HIV clinicians in the U.S. is one heck of a tall order. Thankfully, our guest this month is very much up to the task: Paul Sax, M.D., a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, the clinical director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and the editor-in-chief of Clinical Infectious Diseases.

We are prescribing initial ART to roughly 83% of all people living with HIV in the U.S., but only 62% are taking all of their doses — and we are only retaining 56% in care.
