Joe and Jess talk about all the adversity that theatre as an industry and individual theatre artists are facing right now. In a bright spot amongst cancellations and closures, David Byrne's American Utopia was able to remain open earlier this month by reconfiguring the show to accommodate fewer musicians and a smaller crew. It's given us a lot of food for thought about the future of musical theatre being more flexible and about creators inspiring the trends we will see on Broadway in the coming years.

The passing of Stephen Sondheim left a rather large hole in American musical theater. Sondheim was know for being a mentor to so many in this community, including Rent creator, Jonathan Larson. Joe and Jess postulate about the next generation of theatre makers and finding and supporting the artists of the future. We hope Sonheim and Larson both leave a legacy of giving as many people of different backgrounds as many chances to fail as needed, until they find their success.

This week Jess and Joe talk about the way we collect data and why it's important to question our methods so that we don't unintentionally leave groups and people out. Surveying theatre organizations based solely on this size of their budget means you get results skewed away from organizations that serve communities of color, but a study at SMU's DataArts aimed to refocus that lens. Additionally, they discuss the concept of a human library where you can speak to a person from a historically stigmatized group and hopefully change your misconceptions. For many people the pandemic affected not just daily life, but inspired them to make large-scale changes. In the last year the theater industry has seen a mass exodus of their workers as they seek out careers that offer more reasonable hours and better work-life balance. Jess and Joe point out the similarities they see in the startup world and other industries with very high expectations of their employees. Additionally, they discuss the introduction of captions to many AMC theaters across the country and how this is a move in the right direction for increasing access to entertainment for all.

News in the theatre community these last few weeks have been the highest of highs and lowest of lows. On the one hand, new and exciting movie- musical adaptations continue to roll out. Including the recent casting announcements for the upcoming Wicked feature film (hold for applause). On the other hand, Jess and Joe continue to need to defend the value and validity of virtual theater offerings after a recent survey declared that them merely an unsuccessful pandemic experiment (hold for boos). Big tech is getting bigger every day, so this week Joe and Jess speculate about a (hopefully distant) future where corporations operate like governments. (Hellscape hellscape blah blah blah...) While we don't want to live in the 'metaverse' just yet, we find it important to consider the impact and influence of technology on our daily lives and, in particular, on the media that we consume. How do we determine truth from fiction? Can we rely solely on anti-trust laws to protect us? Food for thought!
