The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia

Author, Joe Ballarini is back for round 2. The Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting book 2 Freaks and Geeks is out now, and he popped by to chat about it, his screenplays, and how far along the Babysitter's Guide Netflix show is coming. We learned a lot about what it's like to pitch story ideas in Hollywood and how quickly a dog wrestling movie can be perceived as a dog fighting movie. We even revisited some of Joe's past work, like cult classic zombie prom movie, Dance With The Dead.

We also break down the original houses from Halloween Horror Nights Orlando, including Seeds of Destruction, Slaughter Sinema, Carnival Graveyard, Scary Tales: Deadly Ever After and Dead Exposure.

What are the 5 best spooky movies for kids?

Remember if you use our link (https://amzn.to/2NSaxLU) we get a little bit of money towards server costs at no extra cost to you. So go ahead and buy that Severed Head you've always wanted.

I know what you guys are thinking. That you really wish that the never-nerdy Give Me Five Podcast guys would finally do something nerdy on their show. Well, wait no longer! Because after talking at length about  "The Endless" (available on streaming) and breaking down the Poltergeist Haunted house and the Trick R Treat Haunted house (and movies) from Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights Orlando, we went all in on nerdiness and staged our very own fantasy draft for the Give Me Five Question.

Which 5 spiritual guardians would you pick for your own supernatural strike team?

Oh! and also there was a French Bulldog snoring through the first 15 minutes of the show. So, enjoy that as well.

Halloween is sneaking closer and we cover A House With a Clock in Its Walls. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it too close to Goosebumps, another Jack Black spooky house flick? And most importantly is it ok to bring the kids?

Speaking of Kids, the latest offering by the Midnight, Kids, is out now. And the opinions differ wildly amongst the 3 of us.

Inexplicably (actually it was inevitable) 2 of us really wanted to talk about the Bat Penis controversy, and Jimmy brewed up another retro game for us, name the product from the 80's tagline.

And our question of the week, What are the 5 best Goosebumps book covers?

Are your eyes deceiving you or did we go full Cage-sploitation this week?

Mandy is Nicholas Cage at his finest. Covered in blood, looking maniacally at the camera while mowing down demon bikers in the back woods of Oregon. A fun movie that might be a little self-serious at first, it finishes strong and is very interesting to look at.

We also step in to Matt Groening's world of Disenchantment, the new-ish animated show on Netflix by the creator of the Simposons and Futurama. For this review we have special guest, and Greg nemesis, Mitch join the party.

This week the Give Me Five guys were left to their own devices, and as a result we have a large variety of topics. We talk about music both live and recorded, in the form of Pearl Jam's 2-night stint at Fenway Park and new albums by Clutch and Dance With the Dead. We close out the summer movie season with a look at Happytime Murders, Equalizer 2, and Mile 22. We also get a bit exploitative with the 1981 cult exploitation film Ms .45 (trigger warning, the movie has explicit rape scenes that are hard to watch). We close out with Rob on NyQuil which is... uh... interesting.

For the Give Me Five question we took a look back at our summer movie predictions to see what movies did the best, the worst, and which were critical darlings. We also tried to figure out who the stand-out performer of the summer is. The loser of these picks will be singing ABBA on a future episode. When the heat clears, who will be singing Dancing Queen and who will be forced to listen to it.

Next week we will be covering the new on demand movie "Mandy", so check it out here if you want to follow along.
